Rock Band 4 announced for PS4 and Xbox One

Got my Band in a Box bundle today for the Rock Band Road Crew, so I've been opening it up and checking everything out. Installing the game as we speak. (Though can't connect to Xbox Live to apply the first update...)

Some observations I've noticed about the XB1 version instruments:
  • The build quality on all the instruments is absolutely fantastic. Drums have never felt more durable and the guitar is really nice too.
  • Both the guitar and drums both take only two batteries now. They each have a micro-USB ports where the third battery used to be. Firmware updates, I think.
  • Kick pedal doesn't have that blue film on it like my old drums. I haven't owned a newer drumset since Rock Band 2 though, so this could be something they did before.
  • Again, not sure if this is new to the RB4 drums, but the base of the drums is completely different than my previous ones. Two feet instead of one base and the legs seem a lot more solid.
  • Drums SEEM quieter, but not really sure if it's too much of a difference.
  • Guitar buttons have a very nice click to them and the guitar feels very nice. Best RB guitar I've ever held.

Wasn't the blue film meant for peeling off?

I really want someone to do an unboxing of the bundle. I don't think anyone has yet?

It probably was, but I never did I guess!

As for unboxing, I haven't seen any videos yet. Not really my thing, so I didn't do it. I'll keep a look out for anyone in the Road Crew that posts one.

Sounds good. If I didn't have so much stuff to pay for already I would probably go for the Band in the Box bundle too. But 275 EUR is just too much for me right now unfortunately.

Hadn't noticed this in any streams, but once you hit 5 stars in a song, the stars start to fill up with gold to indicate how close you are to gold stars. Nice addition.

Just a few questions. Is there definitely no custom set lists? How's the auto calibration on the new guitar? Also, you playing career? If so, how is it so far.

I can't find any way of doing the custom setlists in quickplay at this time.

The auto calibration process is pretty good. My TV has always been very finicky with calibration, however, so it didn't really get it 100%. Manual calibration is still there for fine tuning, but I'm sure for most TVs, the auto-calibration will be plenty good.

I've only dove into a few songs in quickplay currently. Will be starting career here soon and let you know my thoughts on it.

Without being able to connect to Xbox Live, I'm not sure how current everything is to the most recent update, but some other observations:
  • The game will throw you into a tutorial for the freestyle solos right away if you're using a guitar. Good tutorial that teaches you the tricks behind the freestyle solos. There's also an advanced tutorial, but I haven't tried it out yet.
  • The game is very gorgeous. The gems are shiny and it's taking some getting used to, but every song is a delight to play and watch.
  • I can't seem to use the pads on the drumset to navigate menus? Not sure what the deal is here.

The gems to me look like they're filled with Mountain Dew. Lol.

So I bought a new copy of Rock Band 2 for 360 and tried going to rockband.com/bonustracks to put the code in, but it redirected to rockband4.com. I then tried to Google rockband.com/bonustracks and this came up: http://www.harmonixmusic.com/games/rock-band/twentyfreedlc/

20 Free DLC Offer

We’re sorry, but after 5 years of availability the 20 Free DLC offer has expired. You can expand your musical library by visiting the in-game Music Store in your copy of Rock Band, or by searching the Xbox LIVE Marketplace or PlayStation Network store. Rock on!

So am I screwed? Anything else I can do?

Wait for them to rerelease the songs.
Some of them were released free I believe to people that had RB2 exported (since not all 20 of those bonus songs copied over to RB3)

I just spoke with EA support and received/redeemed a code for "Rock Band™ 2 Export Pack Unlock."

The support lady said that was for Rock Band 3, and that I would need to contact Harmonix for rock band 4 info.

But from what I understand, having the "Export Key" unlocks for Rock Band 1 and 2 should unlock the songs in rock band 4 correct?

Yeah you're fine :P

She probably thought your use would be to use it in RB3 now, but yeah, that should just work fine in RB4 too.

We ever going to get hip hop in Rock Band? Would kill for a hip hop expansion using mainly the mic.

A lot of the more popular hip-hop relies on samples, which is hell to license. It's why the Snoop Dogg tracks were re-records. Hell, one was even delisted long before any licenses expired. I'd like to see some more hip-hop, though. I have five packs of country songs, surely I'd buy DLC of a genre that I actually have some level of appreciation for,

I heard multiple versions of songs (Queen RB1 and RB3 enhanced releases, for example) will be turned into one new track for RB4. Will they just revert to the RB1 style now that we have no keys?

I was hoping they'd do something like that. I wonder whether they'll credit the Bon Jov songs as being from Slippery When Wet or the greatest hits albu,.

I'm afraid so.

Also, it's possible that we might getting our first proper DLC announcement tomorrow.

My feature wishlist:

- Post-song stats like RB3.
- Remove overdrive/streak carryover from Tour & Shows mode to allow score saving.
- Display pro drum icon when playing pro drums.
- Remove ability to break streak and earn score from drum overdrive activation fills.
- Change song menu to be more like RB2/3 (show album name, song length, etc.).
- Bring back rating system and filters.

wait wait wait...
We can break our streaks if we don't do the drum fill sections now!!??
I would use those as breaks for really tough songs sometimes...

I just did online chat with EA an hour or so ago. I said I had rock band 2 and needed a code for the export key. She gave me a code and I redeemed and it worked.

So you might just wanna try the chat. She didn't even ask me for the code from my manual. Maybe she was checking records and purchases (where it's obvious that I have owned 1 and 2) but it was really no hassle.

That's not the issue.
It was one code.
One code to buy export key to export RB2 to RB3
And then the same code was used on rockband.com/bonustracks to get a code to download the 20 bonus songs.

The problem is the licensing for those bonus songs expired as did the website.

iirc you can pick whether you want the dynamic fills, the empty fills or no fills for OD activation.

I understand the 3 styles of fills.
But he said breaking streak...
The streaks never broke if you didn't play anything even on Beatles and RB3 where you could have the original path play.

pre-ordered this a long time ago...not sure if i should stick with it though

always wanted to play the game, mainly the drums but not sure if it's worth $350 cdn

i also suck at the guitar lol

I've had both RB 2 and 3 from launch but never got around to exporting RB2. 3rd time lucky I managed to get a competent EA chat partner and I'm all sorted out now.

I think you have to go to Rock Band 3 chat, not Rock band 2 if anyone is still having problems.

Pretty sure gems in the fill sections give you points now in rb4, so it also lets you break your streak. Which sucks with the game having no practice mode.

well that's garbage... how about people that have the freestyle fills? do they just miss out on getting points like freestyle guitar does?

Yeah it's really annoying and one method will have an advantage over the other.

If old fills don't get points, then you lose out on high scores. If they DO get points, then why choose dynamic fills when you can do the old fills where you can't break your streak?

My reaction exactly. I don't know why they would change a system that wasn't broken. I'm assuming that you won't be able to save overdrive by skipping activations since you will lose your streak.

I exclusively use the static style fills (where it shows the real notes) and I'm just praying that the static style doesn't break your streak like the new dynamic fills do. But I'm also hoping you get equal amount of points for all three activation styles to make everything fair.

yes......even if the fills give points....sometimes you really might need to skip an activation for OD paths....I think classic still would be the way to go, especially in songs such as Won't get fooled again and Foreplay/longtime

Yeah, very odd... Perhaps the charted fills give you points now and can break your streak - but the final green cymbal that activates Overdrive doesn't and won't?

But it would make it very hard to not instinctively hit that green cymbal.

And I know many drummers will hit the kick pedal every time that green cymbal comes up, so I wonder if doing that would break your streak also?

I haven't seen anyone playing with freestyle fills turned on, just people with the static fills busting their multipliers.

Also you can't use custom created characters as stand-ins for your band. I mean what?!

BOOOO! I can't have my band, Olivia and the Observers anymore?!

I can still make my character I am playing at least, right?

Damn, that is terrible.

So now if I want to play with my full custom band, I have to do tour mode. But the downside to that is none of my scores will save. I really wish they didn't do the overdrive carry over in Tour mode so my scores wouldn't be disabled.

So I originally wanted to go PS4 because that's where I buy all my third party games and it's where most of my friends play (i.e. I could take my instruments to their place to play if I wanted). I switched to Xbox One because I had RB1, RB2, and RB3 there and I didn't want to lose my exports. I just got a code for the RB2 export from EA though and I can buy the RB1 export for $5. I only owned like 5 DLC songs on 360. Would I be stupid to go back to PS4 now that I can get my RB1 and RB2 exports there?

Edit: I had RB3 on Xbox 360, but don't have the disc or a 360 anymore it that matters.

did we ever get confirmation that we will be able to start downloading DLC early on the ps4 as well or was that only for the xbox one?

If you only had RB1 and RB2 exported then you might as well jump to PS4 if you want.

unless you also had the RB2 bonus songs as those are impossible to get.

Really the only unobtainables right now as a whole are unlisted DLC, RB2 bonus tracks, and Lego Rock Band.
