Multiple fatalities reported at Umpqua Community College shooting in Oregon

So I'm hearing there were 10 deaths one place and 9 deaths others. Is that 10th person the gunman?

I support gun ownership (not the NRA though) so I dunno why you're saying this to me. I was just commenting on the idea that no gun owners buy and obsess over guns to bolster their manliness.

What's sad is the NRA has good training programs, and if it wasn't run by batshit insane people, there could be regulations that make it so gun ownership requires training and the NRA already has a system in place to help with that.

My apologies if this has been covered, but is there any truth to the shooter having a 4chan presence and actually starting the ball rolling there and being egged on?
I have nothing to back this up, it has just come up in multiple things on my timeline.

This might be the stupidest shit i've ever read on GAF, and i've been a member for nearly 10 years now.

Bravo

I've read a couple of reactions to this post stating it's dumb, but I think he's dead-on correct.

What do you think "gun culture" means, if not that?

When americans speak like this sounds to me you either live in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, or some medieval - pre civilized society where you know... knowing how to use lethal force is crucial for your survival

We are talking about one of the most industrialised supposedly first world countries in 2015

That's a big part of the problem, at the core.

Most people are never going to need to defend themselves with deadly force. But the narrative is "defense against home invasion" and such. I know that nobody wants to be a statistic, and it makes sense to prepare for even small possibilities, but the marketing of guns and the news cycle focusing on all the negative news leads to this state where people thing that they better have a gun or their family will be killed in their home. Some of this may be residual from the higher crime rates of 20+ years ago, but the balance is all out of whack. People seem to think a home attack is imminent if they don't have a gun.

Never mind that the much more likely scenario is that somebody in the family snaps and kills themselves or others.

Guns are not just for killing people

Do you think God would blame someone who temporarily renounced their faith to avoid a bullet to the head? Is he that petty?

Guess, hypothetically, it would depend upon their heart. As people have pointed out Jesus ultimately forgave Peter, who denied Him three times to save his own skin. However, to believe the words of Christ and the apostles, whom repeatedly talk about the lives of Christians' not being bound to this world but Heaven, you would likely come to some place similar to Phillipians 1:21 where "for to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Denying your faith in the face of adversity may not be an unforgivable sin, but it would be great cause for someone to take a step back and examine their faith.

If this world was all there was to existence than yes, it would be petty; but when eternity has been promised it should ideologically change the entire perspective on life.

That's the framework I'm coming from as a Christian based on what He has shown through His word.

Wow. I agree: these are the stories people should be talking about. Also heard that one of the three guys who apprehended a terrorist on the train in France(?) went to this college and likely would have been in class.

That's what was being said yesterday with some news outlets posting screen grabs of a thread at 4chan where a poster was claiming he was going to do something in the northwest and telling people to stay home. I don't know if it was ever proven to be the same person or not. I'm hearing now he posted on some bit torrent site or something.

I guess the conservative media is going with the "War on Christianity" angle since I've already heard that numerous times this morning and how Obama refuses to acknowledge it's going on and that evil is to blame not mental health or guns.

I mean there's a pretty obvious answer to that. People often either use them for sport or hunting. It'd be interesting to know just how small the proportion of gun owners are hunters though.

Pretty solid explanation. All kinds of other verses to bring in as well.

There's a lot to sort through here so forgive me if it's been brought up lately but have the motives been discussed here or is this thread all about gun control?

No words for this. Goddamn it.

I'm actually pretty surprised at what he identifies as. I'm not too familiar with Pagan or Wiccan beliefs or how its followers generally conduct themselves so I can't say much about this. But why would he hate christians so much? Especially when it has borrowed much from Paganism

His motives were attention and anger. He, by his own admission was a loser who generally blamed his own failings on others with an underlying mysogony and the religious aspect seems more like an excuse or justification. Even in his last pathetic act he couldn't take responsibility for the fact that he was just an awful unsuccessful person and a failure. So he tried to amplify it through some douche chill "righteousness "

Yeah, this + the Kim Davis + the Pope visit and meeting with Kim Davis is going to make for a field day.
The focus should stay on the victims and how to prevent more victims but sadly that does not bring hits and ratings.

Being a responsible gun owner means practicing proper gun safety. Things like locking up your gun, having trigger locks, storing ammo in a separate location, properly transporting it, etc. It doesn't mean learning how to shoot center mass (or why).

Guns are not just for killing people, just like cars are not just for killing people. This hyperbole isn't necessary.

guns are designed for killing people.

you may use them for sport, but it's intent is to kill

LOL! What?

Guns were invented to kill. That's the only reason they exist in the first place. Cars were invented for transportation.

Ridiculous comparison.

Edit- saw you were responding to someone else that said that.

I wish people would stop saying guns are for sport and instead say, "I use them like toys cause they're fun, like a football that I can kill myself with later" maybe not that verbose.

It proves they have a legitimate use for sport, that's all I'm saying.

Edit for wording as it previously implied guns are used for nothing but sport. That's not how I meant it.

Its legitimate only because we made it so? Just because its something people do, doesn't mean its a legitimate use? I mean... bull fighting is legal in some places. Does that mean its legitimate?

They also kill deer and other animals. Saying that guns can only kill people isn't correct. They can kill a bunch of other stuff.

I've shot lots of guns, but never at a living creature...

Those that want sport, technology can give guns that feel and sound and act completely real without them having to be deadly.
Yes guns can be used for other things, but all of those things can be replicated in a none deadly way.

I mean I'm not a ban-all-guns guy but what do you mean cars are not just for killing people? Cars are never for killing people. Cars are designed for transportation. Guns are designed to injure or kill things (though I bet, according to most gun owners, that would be strictly in the context of self-defense).

I knew this would there would be "Obama wants to take away our guns bullshit."

But now Obama doesn't care about Christians either.

I can't even. The Obama hate filter is too much for me.
