2015-16 TV Cancellations: The Beast, having been fed, asks waiter for his bill.

I'm almost done with the second episode of Minority Report, I kind of want to smack Dash in the face. I don't think I'm going to stick around for episode three, especially since the show is on the road to being cancelled anyway.

Second episode of Blindspot with that dialog I was waiting for someone to say "zoom in and enhance". But I imagine they'll get to it within the next few episodes.

Anyone watch Madam Secretary? I kind of don't want to watch West Wing again lest it be ruined by my post-Newsroom view of Sorkin, but I'm sort of interested in watching some kind of political drama.

(I really should watch Borgen, but I don't know if I can handle Nordic politics right now. lol)

This is from 2013. Major things you need to know: Derek Haas created Chicago Fire/PD/Med. Jeff Lowell created Manhattan Love Story and is the showrunner of Jim Gaffigan. Done Deal Pro is a forum for aspiring writers where if you post on it, you're not a working writer.

Derek Haas said:
I've had to read a lot of spec pilots over the last month. Of the female writers I read, my estimate is that a third of the scripts (out of probably 40) -- and I'm not exaggerating -- had a variation of this same opening...

A beautiful woman wakes up in bed and hits her alarm clock -- it reads 5 AM or 6 AM. She gets out of bed, puts on her jogging shoes, puts in her ear buds... and is off for a run while her boyfriend/husband/significant other lays in bed.

She's inevitably described as "smart as she is pretty" or "former tomboy, now beautiful" or whatever variation of that.

She returns home and showers, dresses... just as her boyfriend/husband gets up groggily... they have some conversation about "hey sleepyhead" or "glad to see you're up" or what-not.

Then the woman leaves for her job as doctor/detective/fashion designer/chef -- where she talks tough or is at the top of her game...

A third of the scripts started this way... at least 10, maybe 12... these are repped writers.

I'm telling you right now... don't start this way. It's so refreshing to see a woman writer who doesn't have a woman as the main character, I can't even tell you.

Anyway, that's an observation.

Jeff Lowell said:
So you're saying that one of the main reasons women writers are at a disadvantage is their lack of originality. Can you think of any other reasons off the top of your head?

But then Manhattan Love Story starts Mansplaining:

Jeff Lowell said:
I think a great female writer can write a male character better than a mediocre male writer. And vice versa. Creativity and talent trumps experience, IMO.

Plus, there's an odd underlying belief to your thesis… The subtext of your argument is that a woman has more in common with any woman character than a man would. Just because you're a woman doesn't mean you have better insight into how every woman will react to a given situation - it only means that you have insight into how you would react.

A Lady said:
Conversely, if the lead in this drama was switched to a female role, I know I could blow you away.

As you know, I'm always game for a challenge. Let someone else pick a scenario about a female character, and we'll both write a scene, and then post them anonymously.

Wow.

Family watched the first two episodes of Limitless this weekend, and we LOVED it. Funny as hell, and really high, creative production values.

CSI Cyber got a 1.0! Ouuuuuch

The ABC shows were pretty much the same as last week, though, which is surprising.

Given the kind of low ratings for the CSI finale, it sort of makes sense. Add to the fact that Cyber is pretty bad, and I don't know if they assumed having Ted Danson on the show would somehow have it break out.

I think Ted Danson being there just to finish out his contracted appearances seeing CSI was cancelled unexpectedly.

I know it's D.O.A, but I'm having too much fun watching The Player. It's the definition of guilty pleasure viewing.

Kinda sad about CSI:Cyber. I have absolutely zero interest in watching even a minute of it, but I want James van der Beek to find a steady role. And I'm sure we'll get tons of ridiculous computer moments out of it.

Yeah, the premise is ridiculous, but I find it entertaining. Starting it out against Thursday night football which probably has a similar demo wasn't wise. But oh well.

If a show is cancelled, doesn't that typically end a contractual requirement for an actor to appear on a show that is no longer in production?

Deadline: CW’s ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ & ‘iZombie’ Get Backup Script Orders Ahead Of Premieres

I have no idea what kind of schedule The CW has in mind. I thought iZombie would stay a 13-episode season!

Also, one of the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's musical numbers got released. This is probably the uncut version. I pray the show is good and successful, because I fell in love with Rachel Bloom and want to keep her on my screen.

Oh, I assumed iZombie was a full 22 ep season. Did we ever see anything saying it wasn't a full 22 pickup? I'm surprised it wasn't a set order. I see here it says 13 eps initially. Glad they're confident in it. Very excited to see the new season.

I thought the CE-G upfront trailer was pretty solid. It's going to be a tough line to toe to get the tone of a show like this to work consistently well. It's CW, though, and they really excel at genre TV above all other networks, so I'm hopeful.

JTV in one week!!

‘Homeland’, ‘The Affair’ Solid In Season Starter Stats On Showtime

At 9 PM, Homeland delivered 1.66M viewers, a 3% climb compared to Season 4’s starting crowd of 1.61M. Over its various telecasts last night, the show clocked 2.1M viewers – a 5% increase compared to S4’s 1.99M.

In its fourth season, Homeland, Showtime’s flagship series, averaged about 6 million weekly viewers across platforms.

The Affair’s Season 2 opener outscored last year’s unveiling by double digits. At 10 PM, it kicked off with 815K viewers, which is a 61% improvement on its Season 1 opening’s 507K. For the total night, the show delivered 1.05 million viewers, up 30% compared to Season 1 comparable’s 809K. The Affair was offered for early sampling to subscribers on demand and on authenticated platforms – delivering an additional 485,000 views for a total viewing of 1.54 million viewers for the premiere. That’s 10% better than Season 1’s early sampling of 1.4M.

The Affair's first season became Showtime’s most time-shifted original series, averaging 3.9 million weekly viewers across platforms.

Does The CW even have room on their schedule for all of this? I thought it was already super tight as is.

Big iZombie fan, so I'm happy about that.

Rick and Morty is over ;_;

Wish it was longer seasons, at least the usual 13. Oh well, 1 year flies by right guys? :(

oh I thought it was the main actress from sunny lol, Ive only ever watched season 1. Wait how did I recognise her from Sunny then? Thats a hell of a coincidence

like he just said, she plays the waitress on sunny, not dee (who is a bartender not a waitress. "the waitress" is the unnamed woman charlie is in love with)

The Venture Bros will grace us with its return between Rick & Morty seasons, so that's something.

And tonight's episode of The Leftovers literally just did all the things he described.

a slightly different variation of it was the introduction of Rachel McAdams's character in True Detective's second season as well. Though in that it's kind of the guy doing the thing and she being the tough one.

It's one thing that I really enjoy about House of Cards: the introduction of Robin Wright's Claire Underwood is with Frank walking in defeated and small, with her sitting almost too casually on the couch (facing the entrance), stopping him dead in his tracks. Also the fact that Fincher doesn't follow Zoe Barns into her dressing room (like a B-movie would do), but instead selects poorly organized drawers with stuff lying around everywhere. It's like two, three shots, but it's much more effective at giving the viewer a prediction on the character's personality. Not a slob, but a bachelor, and career focused.

Basically that whole 'oh hi' is just bad writing. It's the first thing you would cut in an edit, I think. Why waste time with 'the boyfriend' when he can just call her at work? You only get one first scene, better make that count.
I mean, I'm obviously not a writer, but that's what it feels like to me.

Rick and Morty S2 is already over at ten episodes? Awww...

So........got contacted by nielson and looks like I'm going to be a nielson household. I mostly watch stuff on Hulu/Netflix but figured might as well give it a shot. Other family members watch cable/directv though. Time to beef up them Flash numbers lol.

Didn't know you got paid to do the survey. Getting $30 to keep a tv diary seems simple enuff.

The very idea that Nielson still uses 'TV diaries' in this day and age is laughable.

With that said you should go for it.

Castle actually went up 0.1, LoL.

Will Fox pull Minority Report from next week's schedule? It's in the territory of Friday repeats. (As proof, I present last week's Fox Friday schedule, which was entirely reruns: Grandfathered got 0.8, The Grinder got 0.6 and Scream Queens got 0.4.)

Why do they need to say anything about it? Will you not watch season 3 if they don't confirm it for you by now? :p

Obviously I will, but it just seems odd to not make an announcement regarding the show's existence two months after its air-date.

It's more like a 'what's it gonna be, AMC', type thing.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
I see Blindspot is doing decent, and I like Jamie Alexander, but I don't know if I'm interested in picking up a mostly procedural show and I may just compare it unfavorably to Person of Interest if it doesn't have good serialized stuff.

Yeah, I see no reason not to announce positive news, especially when it's about a show with such terrible ratings, since otherwise people will just assume it was canceled.
