Late to the party: LTTP

So it took me until nearly 2016 to play this game properly, and I've just got to say, HOLY SHIT. (and make a thread about it, of course). Is there any game of all-time that is more well-designed? More age-invulernable? More ahead of it's time and more of a trend-setter? I honestly never got past rescuing the princess in past tries at playing it because I assumed it was gonna be a little dopey with aged mechanics or some other disappointment. But my goodness. Who designed this game, Miyamoto? I must confess I'm only up to the Zoras, so I've only begun. Am I going to go into cardiac arrest by the time I near the dark world? I just can't believe the old-school is capable of such greatness. Gotta be the best old game I've ever played.

I actually think Link's Awakening made better use of its own platform's capabilities.

Yeah it's funny because that was my first Zelda back on ye olde game boy but I never got into this because it felt too old by the time I got around to it heh.

Edit: I also bought ALBW day 1 but didn't get very far, maybe halfway through before losing my 3DS

You have to admit 75% of it's design was laid down already by link to the past

This was my first Zelda game and ranks as my favourite game of all time. Ocarina was more hyped for me and I would say Twilight Princess executes my idea of a Zelda game best, but everything always comes down to A Link To The Past.

The pacing is spot on, the world is populated and dense and there is never a dull moment, in my opinion. Nowadays I could play the game blindfolded to get 100% but it just does not get old.

If you haven't played A Link Between Worlds, I would recommend that if you have a 3DS. The world is basically the same and the graphics are... well, divisive. But the music is fantastic, the dungeons are good (if not the best ever) and it feels like a worthy 2D successor to ALTTP and LA (I was never much of a fan of the Oracles, Minish Cap or the DS games).

My favorite part of this game has always been the intros atmosphere. Like, how can you NOT continue playing after such a killer introduction to Hyrule???

Whatever.

It has a great intro. I just thought the whole world-progression by items would be pain-stakingly slow, the level design a little aimless at times, and the synergy between the game systems to not really be there. I thought that came with time in the Zelda series. But after playing this, it has showed me that, although the more recent Zeldas are among the best games ever designed, it has only gotten worse from the point of LTTP onward, which blows my mind.

But hey now you got me thinking, which Zelda had the best intro? Because I can't decide between aLttP and OoT edit: Oh. Yeah. I think most of the others don't have an intro like that.

Not the first time, sadly.

No, there is not.

It's why I can say, year after year, as a passionate gamer of more than three decades with diverse tastes across dozens of formats, that I have never played a game quite as good as A Link to the Past.

Played it for the first time about this time last year, entirely understand the praise it gets. Amazing how much it's design informed Ocarina and basically every Zelda since.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
The intro music defines my childhood. Smooth McGroove did it justice.

I love the feel the story has in this game. After OoT the series took a different direction with its atmosphere. It's not that it's "darker", but it feels different - I wish I could put my finger on why.

This game is amazing, and still holds up all these years later. Airtight dungeon design and pacing. Amazing surprise second half of the game. The only other Zelda to come close to it is Minish Cap.

My one complaint about LttP after playing later Zeldas is that every dungeon in the Light/Dark Worlds have the same repetitive music playing.

It's too early and I was confused. Had to Google Zelda LTTP. Now I get it and feel silly.

I haven't played the game, perhaps I should give it a try.

I actually dislike part of the Dungeon Designs and how they're not really exactly tiled but still wants you to do tiled stuff, but it's still a great game all around, and the bosses, thematic and atmosphere are all fantastic. I prefer Awakening and Minish though.

Even so, it's always a game I can just search online and HTTP, always people sharing good experiences

Well played OP :)

And that is one hell of a game. A clear 10/10 in my book and something that'll still play as well in the future, as the day it released. Utterly timeless.

Link's awakening is better.

I suppose a case could be made.. Some of the mechanics are slightly annoying in LA, due to only having two buttons, but the story and mood are significantly improved. I don't wanna choose between them.

Link's awakening was a lot better in my opinion.
ALTTP was basically a dungeon crawler. LA had those, too, but a lot more enjoyable mandatory and optional stuff to do in the overworld. it just felt like a more fleshed out world.

When I was a lurcher I thought the forum threads with LTTP actually meant Link To The Past, as in playing an old game.

I've never played more than three hours of LTTP as I've always been sidetracked. I plan on doing a full playthrough next year though.

I made this thread to say, do it now. I am a videogame collector with a big backlog but haven't had time to delve in. Recently I've been playing Chrono Cross, but I bailed, Xenoblade, but I bailed (still playing when I can get it back up on an HDTV, believe it or not), Shining Force 1, but I bailed, Golden Sun, but I bailed, Shovel Knight, but I bailed, Heroes of M&M 3, but I bailed (OK, going back to that one)

just trying to say, there's lots of good games out there. But this one is one that needs a proper playthrough

And I'm sorry but gtfo with Link's Awakening. It is a child of (A)LTTP. Without the preceding game, there would be nothing to make. So I'm glad it's better. It literally built upon it. Although I have to say since I own both the GBA and the SNES version of lttp, I strongly considered my options before choosing the one with better sound, resolution and *ahem* COLORS

LiQuid!

I proudly and openly admit to wishing death upon the mothers of people I don't like
Link's Awakening improved on LTTP in every way. LA packed so much personality into its world, story and cast of wackadoo characters. I still go back to it and play it every year or two. Every time I try to play LTTP again I get bored less than half way thru the dark world dungeons.

I've seen it, like, 4 or 5 times.

This is GAF, and you are like, 79 years old in gaf years... quiet, ye old geezer!!

Well to be fair it's not often someone hands you the entire engine of their masterpiece and then lets you build upon it *cough cough* Fallout: New Vegas. But yes the conversations and characterization, and world-building only built upon alttp. But to be fair, this is the genisis. And the combination between gameplay, characters, and world are just perfect, if primitive. And I'm just speaking from up to the Zoras, nowhere near the darkworld yet.

Rose tinted glasses though. You don't fool me OP! Classic games are only good because of some warm and fuzzy childhood memory of sipping hot cocoa and playing them by the fireplace on a snow day. You're not sanctioned to find it great retroactively.

Link's Awakening is better in my opinion. The overworld makes ALttP's look bland in comparison, the story is much better, dungeons are more distinct from each other, and the characters are more fleshed out.

ALttP somewhat edges it out in graphics, music, ambition, and overall mood, so it's close.

My impression (not just going by the credits, but on what people say in interviews) that ALttP was chiefly the work of Miyamoto and Tezuka. Tezuka and Koizumi did Link's Awakening, Miyamoto and Aonuma OoT, Koizumi and Aonuma MM, and it's been solo Aonuma since.

For me, the common denominator for great Zelda games is Koizumi.

Who needs more than A Link to the Past, Links Awakening and Minish Cap.
Maybe the Oracle games too, but I first need to play them.
Zoras? I don't remember any Zoras in this game and I just beat it earlier this year.
Whut? The Zora realm in the upper right to the witch house (behind the waterfall) has loads of them. They also show up everywhere in the water and barf balls at you. Plenty of Zora in ALTTP.

Yeah man it will test your thumb(pad) skills~patience, though I dare to say that this early in the game

Remember getting the flippers?

Yes, those are Zoras in A Link to the Past.

I'm confused here. Is Zoras the name of the flippers and I don't recall the race being in there. What you're describing sounds like the octoroks to me. Are there Gorons in this shit too?

No gorons
The zoras are the motherfuckers that pop out of the water and shoot fireballs at you, yes they're not nice people in this game
The king of the zoras (I think) is the one who sells the flippers for.. 500 rupees or so I believe ?
