Transformers: Devastation |OT| Rising in Disguise

Haven't played many Platinum games and I'm not really a fan of Transformers, but this game is fantastic. I'm aware of the short length and have almost beaten it in one sitting, but I'm definitely going to enjoy going back and mastering it with all of the playable characters.

Got this pre-ordered with Game (I know, I know...) but it doesn't relase in the UK til friday, and it's showing up as "unshipped". :(

I'm staying out of this thread until I get it, the suspense is getting to me.

Game got delayed in South Africa, meh, new release date is the 13th October, not waiting that long so just getting it on PSN on Friday. Funnily enough the game is much cheaper on PSN than it is in stores. can't wait to play this.

It was released on Steam in Europe yesterday.

It was definitely surprising how it barely made into top 10 and dropped quite fast and then just made it into top 10 again.

Take a glance at my post 1 page back. ;)

It's a niche game. :) IT will pick up momentum once the general audience sees it's actually a good game. We, the TF fans buy and support it. Once that news goes round that it's more then a nostalgic quick cash-in, it will pick up pace.

It's not AC, CoD or any other established franchise (yet).

Audiences no longer appreciate intense, short but sweet replayable action campaigns these days. It's sad. Even at lower price points you hear the same complaints.

These are the same people who will beat the game on the lowest difficulty and will completely skip all of the side missions and challenge mode.

Funny thing is, you average CoD has the same length, yet I don't hear people complaining, while it's a full price, 60 dollar game!

Couldn't agree more. I'm happy to pay $50-$60 for games that are short, and focus on replay. Growing up with arcades and in the 8bit/16bit era probably has something to do with it.

This game is awesome btw.

Well multiplayer plays a huge part of that package though, where people pour dozens/hundreds of hours in against other humans, that's a bit different. And now the zombie modes are legit a 3rd pillar of the game as well.

It's pointless to compare other experiences. I simply don't enjoy seeing pure action games (linear singleplayer shooters as well) become so niche and undervalued in today's market. Makes me appreciate them when they do happen though, which is why I don't waver on games like Transformers Devastation.

I've put over 650 hours into DMC3. The intricate combat mechanics and weapon variety are just as satisfying to me as multiplayer competitiveness.

Where multiplayer games are competitive sports, I've always thought of this genre as golf. You are competing against yourself, and the game never ends.

Does anyone think the vibration is too strong in this game on PC? Lately I feel like developers want to give people carpal tunnel syndrome, I find myself turning that shit off in every game.

It will be. Note that it's only out in US territories and EU won't release until Friday.

Hear-say advertising will only go up once it's released here.

Don't forget that the Transformers IP is kinda niche in gaming. Bayonetta has way more appeal to gamers in general (female protoganist, sexual innuendos). Transformers tickles the nostalgia of only a small amount of the gaming community (the majority of TF fans being 25 - 30+).

Us TF fans will pick it up, even if it scores around a 7 overall. NON TF fans will be likely to leave it, because they don't have the connection with the characters and will only see it as a generic/ mediocre game.
It's up to us to spread the word that it's, in fact, not a bad game at all and that it is on par with MG Rising and Bayonetta.

As soon as people start looking through the aesthetics (dont know if I spelled it correctly), they'll appreciate the game for what it is. A more than decent brawler.

So sales won't exactly skyrocket, but for a game which is targeted at a certain audience, it won't do bad I can assure you.

Hope your right dude. I was a bit dismayed when I found out Fall of Cybertron did not sell too good, I really enjoyed that.

OMFG, advanced dodge offset is in this game, just like Bayonetta! What you do is attack and hold the button, then dodge before the attack even comes out. Keep doing this for every button input in a combo, and when you reach the attack you want, just press the button as normal without canceling with a dodge. You can go straight into a transform attack this way.

This game keeps on giving!

The way it worked in Bayonetta was like this:

Say you want to land a punch, kick, punch combo, the last punch of which would be a 'wicked weave' attack and do huge damage. You land the first punch and kick, but see an attack incoming that you know will hit you before you get the last punch out, so you keep kick held down while you dodge and you will still get your combo finisher when you hit punch after coming out of the dodge.

It was pretty vital to Bayonetta's combat as it stops your combo being reset and lets you land wicked weaves on fast enemies which attack relentlessly and require a lot of dodging.

I almost feel a little hamstrung without the mechanic these days.

Thanks for the explanations.

Oh man, I unlocked Grimlock and took him right into the first Challenge Mission to get a feel for him. I can see how there might be a concern that his playstyle might be frustrating in the story missions, especially those where you have to use vehicle mode to move through tight areas, but GODDAMN I think they nailed the Grimlock-ness of Grimlock. Heavy attacks, grappling, and a very unusual implementation of Dino mode. He seems like a perfect character to take on arena battles though. It's super satisfying to link combos with his Dino form, continue them in Dino mode, then link the combos back with another transformation back into robot mode. Running towards a bunch of dudes with shields in Dino mode and then doing a slam and wrecking all the shields at once feels SO GOOD. <3

Fall of Cybertron were criminal. Imo it was a better Transformers game than this, and a good game in its own right.

This game's combat is great and I hope word of mouth spreads and people realize it is a Platinum Game.

Just got a bunch of S rank lvl 12 weapons the damage boost is insane lol.

On another note how do you check what weapon skills do? I'm pretty sure I stumbled upon it before but now I'm having trouble finding it again.

Stupid question:

if I play through on Normal with one character and upgrade them, etc, and then want to play the game on Hard, will I be at a disadvantage by choosing another character? I like replaying games with progressively beefed up characters, but I'm assuming that when I upgrade a single character it only affects them, not the entire cast.

Makes me think that I may just find my favorite and stick with them through harder and harder playthroughs.

Yea, Fall of Cybertron > Devastation.

Man, I hope Devastation sells well overall. These games are so good.

Weapons > Stats, so as long as you have high level weapons and upgrade those, you can just equip good ones on another character when you want to try them out.

So first day sales on Steam show it had sold 2K units so far, I think first month sales at best would be 10K units sold across all platforms :X
http://steamspy.com/app/338930

Note that steamspy may not be entirely accurate as there's always a margin of error.

It takes at least 72 hours before steamspy data even begins to become reliable, also anything below 30k isn't reliable either.

CoD games have multiplayer though, this game doesn't :P
Only rason I'm getting the new Cod is cuz of splitscreen offline multiplayer. That way I can play it with my brother.

I don't know if anyone who preordered from Best Buy has gotten preorder codes for the skins. I had no problem getting the game on my porch this morning though. Best Buy hasn't failed me yet in that regard.

Do you pre order from them often? It seems like every preorder I have with them gets fucked up in some way. I don't preorder much but when I do, it goes south.

I did love Transformers, and that obviously brings the package together just as it would any other with associated love for a franchise. The fact it's a decent looking and very self aware G1 homage is wonderful, because I figured we'd never see anything like that.

The combat is great. Platinum never fucks that up. But I dunno, I'm not feeling the drive (pun intended) to push through the levels, which are barren to look at and not particularly enjoyable to navigate.

So the game is literally liking playing with your toys in a cardboard box instead of one of those $200 playsets Santa said "fuck no" to when you asked him to get you one

That's not really a fair comparison considering the multiplayer aspect of CoD is the main draw, not the campaign.

Devastation is great, but it has some serious draw backs. Besides the characters, the graphics, particularly for the city level and the environments in general, are just awful and generic. Like PS1 level graphics with cell shading and AA. 10-12 stages would be a lot better than what we got either. I'm not against short games, but when you consider the price point that was asked for this I can see it not doing so well.

It really feels like this game was rushed, so the focus was on combat, which I'm happy about. Better that they made the game play well than work on the environments, but I do feel like "Man... what could have been" when looking around the game. Hopefully the sequel has a bit more money to actually make it look even better, because it plays pretty great. And the autobots look great.

Also, the galaga homage... omfg.

Is it strange that I took an entire day off, just for the sake of getting this game?

Little story to go along with it:

Ever since the PS2 launched, I was jonesing for a true G1 game. Sure, there was this little piece of tat that's called Transformers Call Of The Future. But this was a broken, poorly designed and flatout abysmal game.

Voices were WAY off, gimped animations, the lot.

Transformers Energon was good, but it wasn't G1.

Around came the PS3/X360, but alas, no G1. We did get High Moon's games, which were great games, it was G1-ish but not completely..

So now here we are, 12 years since I played that pile o' crap game on PS2.

To me, it's kind of a celebration. Finally something I truly can't wait for.

So I decided to rip the animated movie. It's on my phone allready. I'm going to the place I used to hang out with my childhood friends. Rounded up a couple of friends which I haven't seen since childhood, and we're going to have a TF themed day. They all have a PS4 or XBONE. So we'll just walk in the store and buy our copies, go watch the movie and have a fricking blast.

I'm 36 but I just can't wait until Friday. This game woke up the kid in me and I don't care what anyone has to say!

I did a little tribute to the movie, I'd been meaning to do it for years but this week, it felt right http://youtu.be/pINtBXk3VRI

I'm still really never going to get the "it's too short" point of view.

Darksiders 2 and Alien Isolation convinced me that less can indeed be more. Those games were hurt by being stuffed with filler in order to make the game appear longer. Metal Gear Rising wouldn't have been any better with a few longer empty hallways.

Might have been better if instead of a chapter which is just a boss fight with Sam, it also had a motorcycle action stage before that though. :)

that was pretty cool, man.

I really think, despite how devisive that movie was for a lot of people, that it's a really great piece of cinema with really cool ideas.

It definitely made Cybertron look small though. The size of Unicron compared to Cybertron is very inconsistent.

This game really could do with another few stages.

Darksiders II had one too many dungeons, but Darksiders I was the perfect length I thought. For comparison's sake this feels like there's so much potential but not all of it was realized BECAUSE the game is so short.

Yeah that always bugged me, also the inconsistent presence of some characters, like Sunstreaker on Earth and then later arriving on a shuttle with Optimus Prime

Even within the genre, it's catering to ppl who demand longer games that adds to awful boring filler like they added in DMC4. Dumb dice game and repeating the same dungeons twice (and the bosses thrice) :/

Might have been better if instead of a chapter which is just a boss fight with Sam, it also had a motorcycle action stage before that though. :)
Still the best chapter in the game!!

duckroll is the world's biggest happytroll

anyway played through level 1, it's pretty sick, getting schooled a little on normal cos I don't know the timing. Wish I could double-tap to vehicle mode like Bayo, at least controller option 2 lets me reset dodge to RT instead of RB... although it's weird how the dodge button is also your Wicked Weave. Oh well, it kinda makes sense.

A bit annoyed at how you can vehicle --> jump --> slam easily, I just transform back into robot most of the time. Also shooting these flying jerks is a real pain in the ass. I'm not used to reading the game yet either.

I don't know how I feel about these items... that's a lot of stuff to look through when I just want to beat stuff up. Is lvl 5 item max? Can I still give items skills?
