Ant-Man 2 Announced (Ant Man and the Wasp), Phase 3 dates shift

I've said it before. Hollywood will always prioritize the sequel of a moderate hit over risking a new IP. This is yet another proof of that.
I suppose, though Marvel has more to gain than other studios when launching new franchises. One big character doesn't just boost the respective franchise, it boosts the whole MCU. That means they have a bigger incentive to try and launch new stars, rather than just milking what's proven.

Happy to see them commit to an Ant-Man sequel. I see they've also decided to move Black Panther up so people won't have to wait until after Infinity War Pt1 to see him again post-Civil War. Not sure about Feb date though. Seems.... odd for a blockbuster? Maybe they're not making a blockbuster after all, and it'll be a 50 million dollar drama about T'Challa having to deal with diplomatic shit! :P :P

One of those "untitled" films is probably a holding date for Spider-man 2.
It's strangely landing on black history month. Has to just be a coincidence.

we live in a world where an Ant-Man movie making 650 million dollars is considered meddling.

We have been so blessed.

Damn last time I paid attention it was around 450 million. Did it release in China yet?

That's a lot better than I thought. Although I knew it was profitable so a sequel was likely anyway.

They want Black Panther to be in contention for Best Picture at the Academy Awards :P

The fact that Scott, Hope and Carol have shit in between the Infinity films means that IW1 is basically the Original Avengers getting jobbed to Thanos.

Deadpools landing in a February, although that has Ryan Reynolds

The film is being pushed back to make room for a movie with a female hero in the title and co protagonist role.

Another sidekick - pathetic beyond words. Big shame on Marvel Studios. If they announced five movies with female leads right now it would still be pathetic beyond words. They're so far behind it's not funny.

Did they? Seems unusually given that it's not their film.

Sony will probably be mentioned before Marvel in all of the marketing stuff but what Sony wants is for the Spider-Man movies to appear as if there's nothing different between them and any other MCU film on Marvel's lineup. Pretty much the entire basis of the deal was to let Feige take the wheel on the franchise and for Spider-Man to get the kind of faith put into it as people put into Iron Man, GOTG or Avengers.

On a personal level, I just want to say I hate that both Marvel and DC use the time AROUND NYCC to make these type of announcements, but can't be arsed to do it at the actual show!

Last year, just two days AFTER DC announces their entire slate, now Marvel does this day one...

ARGH!

I thought Sony got to make those?

Eh? Oscar contenders aren't released in Feb. That's when studios usually dump movies they typically want you to forget. They release them at the end of the year typically since that is the cut off time frame for an Oscar nomination. A movie release din Feb is usually long forgotten by the time Oscar season rolls around.

Would you rather wait for the movie or do you prefer to be triggered right away without knowing anything? Because right now you sound really unreasonable.

They haven't revealed what the movie is about, and it could actually be funny to see Wasp overshadow Ant-Man, in so many ways.

Glad we get BP sooner, but worried about its box office as a February release.

...

Thanks for the correction, Cheebo.

Ant-Man got around an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. That's pretty damn good, if you ask me.

Yeah ironically enough despite a lot of anti-hype it's one of the highest rated MCU movies and is only behind Iron Man, The Avengers, Cap 2 and Guardians. Ant-Man ended up surprisingly good and I'd say it's one of the MCU's better movies.

So where does the inevitable sequel to Spider-Man fit? 2020 or a fourth slot for 2019? Or even more reshuffling ahead?

Spider-Man 2 is def. one of the 2020 titles. 2 years after a solo movie is little too soon for a sequel, especially since 2019 is going to be the Avengers 3 finale and Inhumans.

This doesn't help the cause I imagine you're trying to fight at all.

I started reading Captain Marvel the other day, I think I am okay with delaying this more or maybe just go straight to Kamala.

Love the title. I like that Hope isn't going to be the typical Marvel love interest. It's about damn time.

It sucks to see Captain Marvel get pushed back again, but there hasn't been much traction in the project - they're not in a hurry to get casting going to begin with. Might as well let it brew a little longer.

Marvel really doesn't have a lot of female characters that are obvious candidates for a solo film. Doesn't mean they couldn't dig deeper, but sexism is only part of the problem.

It's pathetic. Remember some of the excuses and statements in the past years?

I'm sure there've been more since then.

Are you high? There was no possibility at all Wasp would be getting her own movie. Ant Man getting a sequel period is just shy of a miracle, and wasp getting a co-starring role in the movie (wasp was not a sidekick in AM1) Is a good thing, not a grand conspiracy to keep women down.

GTFO of here with this.

Selma came out in January so there's that.

It came out December 2014, that is why it was able to be a contender for the oscars that year.

If it came out Jan 2015 it wouldn't be able to be a contender for nominations till the next Oscars that have yet to happen.

Ugh, I was hoping Ant-Man would be relegated to team-up films. Didn't care for the movie, didn't care for Lilly as Hope, not excited for the sequel prospects.

But BP moving up is nothing but good news - even if 2018 in general seems weirdly far off.

*raises eyebrow*

Moving both Black Panther and Captain Marvel out of summer slots?

Hmmm.

Well November has been a prime month for female lead movies for some time now. See Hunger Games and Twilight. The month itself is about as big as summer months anyway, and they have done well there before with Dark World. So the release date on that one makes perfect sense. I imagine there is good market research on that month in relation to female audiences. The February release date on BP is a bit more weird though. That is typically a smaller month. They may be trying to capitalize on Black history month, and there have been some successful big openings there in recent years( 50 shades and Lego for example.)

Edit

Disregard me. Just realized I misread and though captain Marvel was coming in November.

I'm still wondering if the movies will be fairly stand alone or if they will really tied closely with Infinity War movies. for example Ant-Man 2 after Infinity War 1, will it be another stand alone comedy movie ignoring Infinity War, or if Infinity War event will affect Ant-Man movie so the tone will be more darker since I'm pretty sure everyone expect Infinity War 1 to have some downer ending.

Yeah I believe Oscar bait is usually Nov onwards. Ride dat hype.
I believe the rule is a film has to have a public screening in both NYC and LA by Dec 31st of they calendar year to be eligible for the next years Oscars.

Which is why so many are in the Nov/Dec time frame. End of the cut off and will be freshest in the voters minds.
