Is it common to make big multi-topping sandwiches in the US?

I do 't know if that is supposed to be a joke, but that is nothing impressive at all. Firstly, it's only one aisle. Secondly, it lacks real cheese.

I am Swedish, and all my local stores has about three-four times as much, and also a deli section where you can taste and select from delicious varieties.

Fuck, I'll have to go shopping because the thought of it made me hungry. :D

The ignorance is prevalent I see. And yes, there is also a deli section where you can get cuts by weight.

That's just bread and butter. To have a sandwich, you need something sandwiched in between something - hence 'sandwich'.

Did it really take 17 pages to get the definition of sandwich? Oh boy.

Anyway, I think middle and nort Europe are more likely to eat bread with one or two toppings, or even just butter or margarine, because the bread actually tastes good, so there's no really need for toasting and grilled cheese and tons of fillings to hide the taste of wonder bread.

Edit: and yeah, I'm partly kidding. Stereotypes and all that.

Edit2:
I really like the taste of freshly baked bread. Fresh bread with margarine and thin slice of meat is about the greatest thing ever.

I just get my American cheese here:

I don't get it. So you think the cheese pictured is fake or??

A story I still recount when talking about food waste is from my days at college when I took a job in the dining commons for a semester is the time when I was in the dishroom, and one of the trays coming down the belt had this huge sandwich on it. The dining facility I worked at was the one attached to the residence hall I lived in (Hamilton Hall, West Halls, Penn State - anyone else here ever lived there?) and it had a fairly large sandwich bar with various breads and cold cuts and vegetables. This wasn't someone going through the line and being handed a sandwich. This was someone who went through, piled together what seemed to be a logically constructed and quite large sandwich, and who then proceeded (memory is vague, but I'm pretty sure of this) to take not a single bite of it and just throw it away onto the dish conveyor belt.

There was plenty of other food waste that I saw in a couple months there, but that was just the most conspicuous example I'd ever seen.

Could you taste the distinctly American brand of triumphant confidence? Imagine what it feels like to wield that power casually and without effort, as natural and comfortable as breathing. It's a heady responsibility.

exactly why I feel that these sorts of actions should be left to the experts

What the fuck do you mean it lacks real cheese? It is plainly covered in cheese.

Somebody is going to read your post and start imagining that Stockholm is literally built from obscure and rare cheese, with cream cheese for mortar. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT.

And as for the bolded, I've probably been in like 11 or 12 grocery stores in stockholm and amazingly they didn't all have three to four times as much cheese as this. Or any more significant claim to "realness"

I think that post was a joke....but it is definitely deep into poe's law territory.

sandwiches, they rock op.

This thread is great. It inspired me to make a cheese and butter sandwich for my evening meal.

if only they could do more than boil their food over there, they could enjoy civil cheese and bread sandwiches. the world war was hard on them all though, I understand.

I love a Cuban. It's such a great combo of toppings.

Oh great now I have to go to Paseo's.

Btw for all the mockery of a cheese and butter sandwich, toast with butter and a good sharp cheddar or Parmesan is delicious and a cheese and tomato sandwich can be amazing.

I will support you. This is a regular breakfast. Hell, I usually eat this for lunch

Or two. That's it.

American food culture is fucked up.

This is very common in Holland where I live too. I can't imagine these multiple topping sandwiches for lunch.

Eating food that tastes good is pretty fucked up.

Why would I ever want a breakfast that I enjoy when I could have 2 pieces of bread with a cold piece of cheese in the middle?

That shit is for lunch at work, breakfast looks more like this:

Oh and no one round here refers to a toast with a slice of cheese on it as sandwich.

what exactly is fucked up about the way we eat sandwiches?

i would say this is typical of an American lunch (if not slightly larger than normal)

+ maybe some chips and some fruit.

"fucked up"??

absolutely vile, you should be ashamed of yourself

Absolutely ridiculous. No wonder everyone is fat in america!

In all seriousness, pieces of bread with a single topping can and does taste good. Of course the "US" sandwiches everyone posts here are delicious as well, but it's not something that I eat on a daily basis. Footlong sandwiches with sauce and chips every day is kind of ridiculous and is just overdoing it. Too many calories.

Also yeah pieces of bread with a single topping isn't really a sandwich. Not debating that.

It's hilarious how you call it a "cold" piece of cheese like it's something abnormal.

When it's the only thing in there? Yeah, that's super abnormal.

Jesus christ, at least melt it.

You also think this is normal.

Your sandwich opinions are null and void, sir.

No it's not. No idea why you guys are so obsessed with melting. Cheese tastes amazing, no need to melt it. Doesn't make it taste better, only different.

To be honest I'm not opposed to the idea of having non melted cheese on a sandwich, I'd appreciate at least some vegetables or something with it too though.
