September 2015 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes October 13th

Being a bit more IT: anyone else thinking that there's not that much enthusiasm before Assassin's Creed: Syndacate's release? I don't want to judge its sales 11 days before the release, especially by using Amazon.com only as an index, but I thought we would've seen one SKU in top 100 already.

I think Assassins Creed's popularity is waning big time especially after the disastrous launch of Unity. The concept and gameplay are starting to feel stale to a lot of people. They're getting tired of the same old Ubi open world formula. The series will need a major overhaul if they expect it to continue being a cash cow for them.

I think how this title will do will be almost dependant on word of mouth and good reviews. Initial wave of sales will be big, but the legs will be hit if this game is not seen as an improvement over Unity.

Lol I think Gaf's hivemind for AC syndicate not doing great is extremely exaggerated. Did folks not see the Nielsen most anticipated games thread where AC syndicate ranked third or something?

People love these annual releases and will be quick to forget gripes that happened last year with AC.

Also, there is not much 3rd person open world (GTA formula).
Nearest would be
Fallout (not 3rd person and too much RPG),
Drake Collection (not open world + exclusive)
Tomb Raider (not open world + exclusive)

rest seems to be FPS

AC will not be game of the season, but will do fine.

agreed. Pretending to be cool while murdering virtual people in expensive 3d environments is why people play retail aaa games, and that is what asscreed is all about. Moreover, the only people bored of asscreed were born before 1995 and that isn't who determines the success of these games.

This could be just anecdotal but I don't think Halo has anywhere near the hype many here have concluded. It will do big numbers, but from what I have seen Destiny, Battlefront, COD, and Fallout (for the WRPGers) seem to be outstripping the discussion for Halo.

Yeah. TBH AC Syndicate is offering something pretty unique compared to the other holiday games. Sure the gameplay/story/world etc is stale as old bread but I think mainstream is just happy to be an assassin for 20-30 odd hours.

Bingo. Let's not kid ourselves, Ubi struck gold with their game design for the franchise and its adoption in the mainstream.

Sales may dwindle but it's still a top dog on the charts.

I think it's less to do about userbase and more to do about options the userbase has. When Halo 1/2 released, there was basically nothing else it was competing with directly. It set the standard for local and online MP with Halo 2.

Halo isn't the only game in town like it used to be. There's just too many options for other games people are playing.

I also think that Microsoft is being a bit TOO conservative with the series and basically doubling down on the core fanbase. That's fine, and may appeal to long term fans, but I think they risk making changes that could broaden the userbase or bring back interest in those that have left the series.

I think Halo 5's sales will be more in line with what Gears has traditionally sold, which is to say not as much but still good.

Abdiel says that Halo 5 is tracking around the Xbox One CoD at his place of work, FWIW

Hmm I thought it said "we almost have as many orders for Halo 5 as we do for COD on XB1" He then states that PS4 order are higher.

We really won't know much until after this month.

Then it should be:
Halo 5 = COD Xbox
Halo 5 < COD PS4
COD Xbox < COD PS4
so
Halo 5 < 1/2 COD

that does not sound very much.

hmm lately ive been off with the numbers but september's NPD i have no doubt is sony's (posted/edited my numbers in page 2)
Pew, just checked your numbers out of curiosity (page 3).
Such low WiiU numbers. It saddens me to see this.
Even sadder: you might be right.
Nevertheless i hope mario can lift WiiU above 70k or so.

Or: will WiiU sales in September be higher than the gap between PS4 and XB1?

No, PS4 / XB1 is gonna be >100k this month, Mario Maker will boost Wii U, but not so much.

For fun, here the months with PS4 at >50% marketshare ( Or, PS4 > XB1 + WIU )

November 13: 50.1%
January 14: 58.8%
April 14: 54.8%
May 14: 58.8%
September 14: 59.2%
October 14: 56.6%
March 15: 51.5%

Are the years correct?
None in '15?

Skipping through the predictions, there is a bunch of people who predict
PS4 - XBOX < WiiU

Well, they may be right they may be wrong haha, personally, i really don't see Wii U and XB1 beat PS4, can happen, but i don't see Wii U at 100k or XB1 at 300k, and i think PS4 will be above 400k, so seem hard for me PS4 < XB1 + WIU... but hey, we'll see.

Woops, my bad, March 2014 is March 2015 haha. March 2014 has PS4 with 49.3% marketshare.

oh yeah? Wii U had a full year of 100% marketshare!

Kappa

(also just for fun, Xbox One had one month of >50% marketshare, November 2014)

always horrible at these but meh, why not

[3DS] 120k
[WIU] 89k
[XB1] 250k
[PS4] 450k

Think MGSV and Destiny will bump the PS4 pretty good.

Next month will be real interesting. I've been watching all the major sporting events / show premieres going on and see tons of PS4 commercials all the time. Between the taco bell golden PS4 thing and the Nathan Drake collection, seen the commercials during MLB playoffs, NFL games, sunday night football, the voice, Walking Dead, etc.

Wii U domination. :P

Wonder if XB1 will even beat again PS4 and Wii U combined in a month. Some months ago i thought October was a given with Halo 5, but now with the PS4 pricedrop i'm not even sure if XB1 will beat PS4 alone, no way it beat both Wii U and PS4 haha.

Okay, already thought something like that.
But you see that 2014 was really heavily towards PS4, while 2015 so far was not as extreme. Call it hardselling Xbox, weak PS4, off season or saviour spencer.
Personally, I also predicted a 100k+ gap, but it's not for sure.
