Transformers: Devastation |OT| Rising in Disguise

Just finished it. Two things...

1) I f*ckin' love this game. Even if it feels like it could've done with a another few months polish the pure rush it game my inner child was unlike any other game I've played. I was, quite literally, "marking out" at the end.

2) Speaking of the end
I liked it. From Optimus twatting Megatron with the same move he used in the movie while saying "it's over!" to the sequel tease to seeing Defensor and Superion... and that ending theme! Dear God!"

One thing I like about this game is the little touches and references to the old toys and TV show. Like in the model viewer, when you press triangle (or Y on XBone, I guess) the first thing they say is the characters motto. I love this game.

All you guys talking about clearing the game on higher difficulties... I can't even seem to get past the devastator menasor fight on warrior. Menasor feels so cheap in this one.

Amazing. I was planning to unwind with MGO3 tonight, but maybe I should start this.

Model viewers are the best bonus feature in games.

The weapons and character leveling up system means the game just becomes easier the more you play though.

Scoring system is kind of whack. All you really need to do for easy SS ranks is equip a firearm with low damage numbers and continuously land headshots with the Prime Time Bullet Dive™ because there's no limit on how many style points you can accumulate off of it.

It's boring and defeats the purpose of a game like this, but it's a glaring oversight

I actually kinda doubt it's an oversight, honestly their games always have multiple ways to cheese stuff. I mean if they really wanted to be that strict about being skill based why are the items and the leveling up stuff even there.

First Devastator fight on Prime difficulty.
Using Wheeljack when I've barely touched him because fuck it.
Get rektd like 13 times.
Finally beat him with a surprise SS ranking.

massive satisfaction right now like omg

Can't decide between Megatron Battle Theme or Shockwave Battle Theme. I can't decide. Too strang.

I have my complaints about it but I can't tell if some of them are because I haven't yet gotten gud or if it's legitimately kinda annoying design. It's specifically with some of the challenge room stuff, things like getting hit by offscreen missiles or just getting absolutely gangbanged by like five guys at once. Of course my gear and tech's not up to snuff yet so that's probably part of it.

But seriously, on Commander difficulty most one-on-one or limited one-on-two challenge rooms aren't toooooo crazy, but anything with the tapedeck twins and their little helpers is insane; projectile spam up the wazoo (even worse when Shockwave and his fucking giant lasers enter the fray, because he jumps just high enough you can't reach him with one jump but two might overshoot. Also the auto-lock goes absolutely nuts with more than one opponent).

Did Menasor always look like he does in this game? As someone who had little-to-no knowledge of the 80s series, I really like his design, more than Devastator for some reason.

Yea it's a damage debuff.

Man! I was really hoping it would give me temporary allies or something in exchange for damage reduction. Guess I'll have to breed those out/sell em

i'm probably unique in that my entire exposure to the 80s transformers franchise was a encyclopedia database book my cousin had that gave me the scoops on every single 'bot, but I never watched any of the shows or the movie or anything. But yeah, Menasaur always looked like that.

I didn't think the Combiners were ever that towering though. But it sure looks good.

I must say, I'm not too keen on Menasor's Combiner Wars design.

I dunno, his torso just seems so tiny in comparison to his long arms and legs.

Just started my fourth playthrough, using Grimlock this time. I gotta say, i'm not really enjoying using him as much as the others so far. Coming off the back of my Bumblebee run seems like a mistake, as i love playing this game with speed as part of my arsenal.

Those top down challenge rooms are atrocious tho. It doesn't add anything to the experience at all. Just hampers your ability to keep tack of enemies and plan your attacks. I hope they don't return in a sequel.

Finished my first playthrough. Definitely going to have to go through it again, maybe with a different character this time. I ended up gravitating towards Wheeljack thanks to the damage his missile attacks in vehicle mode did. Might check out Sideswipe next.

Menasor appears to be based on his CW design, but thankfully is much better proportioned.

While we're at it, the Constructicons are also based on the CW figures, and for the most part they look fine...except for Long Haul, who's gotten really fat over the years apparently lol.

I was this close beating challenge 21 on Prime difficulty. Literally had the final enemy down to 30% of this life. :| It was a mistake doing this without any revival items. :P

Prime with SS Star Saber wrecks.

Challenge 14 and 17 where you fight
"Autobot clones"
already got me pumped up, but then it kicks the adrenaline up a notch with its own unique theme!

It'd be a crime against humanity for a game this bad-ass to not receive a sequel.

Anything with Soundwave in it isn't too bad since even on Prime difficulty he has a tendency to stay in one place and shoot from afar, so against an in-your-face brawler like Blitzwing you can listen for audio cues or play around with the homing missile behaviour for some convenient Prime Time triggers. Shockwave pairing up with someone else is fucked up though, even if you try to interrupt his gun attacks with the grappling hook to keep him in check.

Auto-aim is also rather blatant. You know it's silly when somehow it abruptly targets an enemy 180° behind you (with the camera not even positioned to see it) when you're trying to manually aim at something right in front of you.

That's weird... takes some design cues from both, it seems. Which isn't an entirely horrible thing. Still prefer the OG one, but glad there's still some aspects of him in there.

Well, toys are limited by what's physically possible

while media presents what the ideal representation would be

stop fat shaming toys

Any measurable performance difference between PS4 and XB1 on this? I can't decide which platform to get it on.

The only time I noticed something off was when I went to the edge of a map (a cliff) and moved the camera to where it was outside of where you could go looking in (hopefully that makes sense), there was a noticable framerate drop, but this when I was just farting around after I killed everyone in an area. During actual gameplay it's felt flawless for me on Xbox ONE and I'd imagine we'd have heard about something if it was janky on PS4.

edit: arggh. I need to git gud. I can't beat Megatron without getting hit on commander.
I want that cheevo!

Prime with SS Star Saber wrecks.
What's the attack power you get with that? I'm using Wheeljack because I have some wrenches that go to 18.6K but I prefer Prime.

The ones I got only go to 11K. I guess your wrenches are better. :P I've been hoping for a SS Prime's Axe but it never drops. I do have this thing at least:
Well shit. I want to use Prime because I have all these lovely Techs I spent a lot of money on and he has one more slot than Wheeljack at what appears to be max level (Rank 99). Plus I love his trailer for those shielded assholes.
I just keep on hunting I guess. I haven't found anything that would be like...more than 6Kish if I upgraded it fully.

Maybe I'll upgrade it. Got so much shit to get rid off. Wish the item management in this game wasn't so god awful.

Seconded. He looks ridculous. Surprising, considering I thought Devastator turned out fine. (Mine had a couple of issues but more the mould than the design)

Bring on the dinobots.

I'm sure it's mentioned somewhere else in the thread but I'm babysitting and on mobile but I've been debating picking this one up. Is it as long as rising? Longer? As fun? Sell me on this god damn game. (I have little exposure to the 80s cartoon though my dad loved it as a kid)

Edit: I would consider Rising a 10/10, if that helps.

This is a character action game from the same director. That ought to be enough to sell you, frankly!

I've been enjoying this one as much as Rising, though they're different enough that I'm not sure which I would consider better.

Length is variable. 4 hrs if you speed through it on easy, some would say. I've heard reports of 6-8 hrs. Seems about on par with Rising. I personally took about 15+ hrs playing on Commander with unupgraded weapons (except at the very end) and had a blast! My Steam profile lists me having 25 hrs in the game right now, with max 1-2 hrs of idle time, and I'm still very hooked on the game playing through the 50 (quite challenging) challenges. As usual with the genre, the enjoyment you get depends on the investment you put in.

I have no special affinity to Transformers, but I would easily recommend this to anyone who's enjoyed any other Platinum character action game.

Bought the game yesterday (getting a free digital copy of dqheroes instead of buying it retail so there was some extramoney for games). I am not a big fan of platinum. I like them and own most of their games (kinda makes me a fan I guess). And besides a few episodes and the first of the New movies (crap) I never watched something that has to do with transformers.

But hell, this game is fun so far. Only finished the first Level, but it is great so far. Nonstop Punch in the face action with great soundtrack.

Seems like Activision was willing to give Platinum a licensed property after The Legend of Korra, and since this game was no doubt a bigger success, I would be more surprised if they didn't get another project. What are some huge licensed titles owned by Activision? Spider-Man for sure, which is interesting because Platinum did say they wanted to do a Spider-Gwen game. I do believe TMNT is held by Activision as well, so that's very likely.

I guess TMNT, Avatar the Last Airbender, another Transformers title or maybe something really crazy (Spyro? Crash? Pro Skater?) are the next things they will be doing with Activision.

It really seems that with Kora and Transformers, Activision loves the work Platinum is doing for them (and if anything, Activision saved the Rising team; with Rising 2 scrapped, Activision likely gave them the offer to work with an licensed IP that they own the publishing rights too). So them continuing to work with Platinum makes a lot of sense overall :).

Gotta comment on the games soundtrack though....its like the love child of Rising's OST and the old-school Transformers cartoon; its amazing :').

I don't own a PS4 yet but does the PS3 version of this run well? Would love to give this a shot but I don't know if I'm getting a PS4 this fall, so if anyone can answer this, I would greatly appreciate it :).

I can't get enough of the character/fight themes in this game. Not only is it taking me back to Mega Man X, parts of it also feel like either 90s American wrestling metal (Blitzwing) or modern day Japanese wrestling promo/entrance music (Motormaster).

And sometimes it's just too good to describe.

Melts my face. Might be better than the Rising soundtrack tbh. Same level at least, even without vocals.
OST is amazing in this game. Every song has a strong melody to it, strong instrumentation, etc. Hype as hell.

Platinum is fucking amazing with music.

Quick question:

Are there any other forms of Grimlock's throws besides the Piledriver and Dino-grab?
Also - same thing for his overdrive; is it just the one running grab? (Dunno if there's an air version)

I've decided to play with him for a bit since I used Prime alot. He has some pretty neat stuff, like his Focus counters in Dino mode being his rush attacks (At least the heavy one I think)

Anyone who can help me with a path to play this game after Warrior difficulty would be awesome. I want to play through the higher difficulties with all characters.

I played it once through with Optimus on Warrior. Then I started on Commander with Bumblebee. Gave him some lvl 10 weapons and upgraded his stats a bit. What should I do after that? Magnus wit everyone and then the same on Prime? Trying to figure out a roadmap.

Anyone wish there was a way to pick Platinum's and Activision's brains about this game? I'm dying to know how this thing got green-lit. What it was like getting Hasbro to OK all of the crazy shit in this game. Figuring out that the metal soundtrack was the best fit. I'm a crazy-ass Transformers fan and would love to know details like this.

Well, I was thinking of parking and unlocking the door using the spare key, but... that works too!

If your parents do wake up and they go in for a hug when they see you, make a slow-motion sound with your mouth and dodge away, then say "Not this time!"
