My daughter is terrible at Mario Kart 8 and needs advice

I've got a video of my 5 year old winning his first race in MK8. He was sitting on this chest thing we have near the tv , goes into the last lap 3rd , jumps up onto the chest as he gets near the end, steals first and does a victory dance before sprinting out the room to tell his mum he just win Mario Kart.

Easily one of the best videos I have of my youngest.

My kid is 3.5 yo and she finishes around the middle of the pack in 50cc, she knows how to use items but not when and wouldn't have the first clue about the drift mechanic so either your kid is a genius or you're expecting far too much from someone that age.

Edit: that's in reply to the OP, not to Rulkez btw.

2.5? C'mon dude, my daughter is three and despite playing Rocket League every week she hardly gets the concept of using the stick to turn.

She usually gets 3-5th place when focusing. If she's 1st and loses her spot near the end of the race, she gets mad and stops right before finishing the race, plummeting down to 6th and 7th.

Sounds like she has an anger management problem, you should take her to a psychiatrist.

I'm kidding.

Your daughter is under 3 years old. I think it's pretty impressive she can consistently finish <5th place. Getting distracted by shiny stuff is okay for someone her age.

Nah. All children excel at different things early on. Mine just chose Mario Kart. Would have preferred she chose applied sciences, so she can grow up to work on Half Life 3.

If your child is two and a half and takes an interest in applied sciences, it would be an absolutely major disappointment if they ended up just making video games.

Look at your replies so far, you've ignored all the advice posts and just defended against the skeptics, this isn't a genuine request for help this really does seem like a brag thread.

Well, the replies are a toss between "just let her be", "jokes", and sincere advice.

But just because I didn't respond to the advice directly doesn't mean I'm not taking it into consideration.

My general thought process right now is "she's at the limit of what she can do, just let her growth be as it is, let life be".

Almost 2 ½ and terrible at mario kart? My professional opinion is that you adopt a new one, to see if new genes will do better or if it's just your failings as a parent that led to this.

No 2 ½ -year-old needs advice on anything.

incredible how the GamePad hasn't been thrown across the room

From literally the first time he crawled. We used the gamepad to entice him:

2.5 years old, she might not quite understand it fully. my daughter just turned 3 when it came out and she was bad at it too. By the time she turned 4 she was a lot better, she even came in first a few times in 50CC. Just let her play lots, and keep practising.

Sounds like she's doing pretty well. My 7 year old daughter still can barely stay on the course and usually places last in 50cc Grand Prix. It doesn't really matter though. It's just a game.

Your child isn't even 3 yet. She doesn't have the physical or mental capacity to "get better." She is literally at her ceiling.

Yep. My 2.5 year old twins "get" games when the watch but can't actually play anything. They don't have the attention span and focus or motor control to do it well.

Err... I know this is some kind of bizarre "I'm proud of my daughter" thread, but isn't it potentially damaging for a two year-old to get prolonged exposure to the sensory overload and instant gratification that video games represent?

Her attention span is going to be all kinds of effed up.

I was probably playing games by the time I was 4-years-old but we're talking NES Nintendo platformers, not competitive kart racers.

Playing MK8 at 2.5 years is pretty darn impressive in my opinion. I think the improvements will come naturally with time.

Push her harder. Get emotionally distant when she loses, and start building a connection between in-game success and your love. Harness that childlike desire for emotional connection, and you'll breed a champion in no time.

My daughter is 3 and is terrible at Mario Kart...but she's 3. She's pretty happy to beep the horn on the Gamepad while I play. That gives her a thrill. She also likes being my helper in Super Mario Galaxy 2. We'll also leave the drums unplugged while we play Rock Band and let her bang around on those. That = fun to her.

TL:DR; she'll get better as her muscles develop and her hand-eye coordination improves. To get 3rd-5th place at 2.5 years old is pretty impressive.

Two and a half? I'm proud (and a bit terrified) that my 18 month old daughter figured out she can turn my PS4 on by pressing the PS button on the controller.

...and then says "Whooooooooooa!" when the TV turns on.

Basically what everybody here is saying. She's not even 3. My son is 3.5 now and hasn't played MK8 lately, but when he played it around that age last year, he was much like your daughter. He learned what most of the items were for and how to use them (not always strategically). When he focused he could finish top 5 on most tracks, but he'd very often always get distracted and/or frustrated then have things fall apart. Especially when there were animal bystanders at various tracks.

Actually, I'm shocked your 2.5 year old could figure out drifting at all.

Actually, I'm beginning to think this is a thinly veiled humble brag "my 2.5 year old is a genius" topic...

Ha ha I remember when I tried to teach my young cousin how to play Crash Team Racing, she didn't get very far as she didn't grasp that you need to hold down the button to make the car go.

My daughter does that......

Ha ha, I can't disagree with her. Toad are evil on the race track.
