Is it just me or is there precious little hype for Assassin's Creed: Syndicate?

When is Assassin's Creed: Syndicate coming out? Next week? Ummm... what? Talk about zero marketing presence, had no idea it's so close.

Somewhere between dropping one (or more!) of them a year and the complete shitshow that was Unity, Ubi has done a lot to make people wary/weary about any new entries.

I loved this series, but I stopped caring after AC3. I can only take so many carbon copy annual sequels with little innovation.

I'm open minded to giving Syndicate a crack. I think the utter state of Unity when it came out has made people more cautious about Syndicate than franchise fatigue.
If the reviews come out and general word of mouth is positive, people might be more likely to pick it up.

I'm hoping so hard this is the next AC2 after Unity's AC1 vibe.

I just checked my emails before coming to GAF and I had a voucher for 35% off Syndicate. It made me realise I know next to nothing about the game, and I'm only curious about whether the PC port will be any good or not. My guess is that it won't be, but you never know.

I might spend my day replaying 2 on PC for the first time.

I feel bad because Syndicate is actually Quebec's baby and I worry Ubisoft will sledge them for poorer than expected sales because Montreal fucked up Unity

Is it just me or has there been another downgrade from the E3 footage to recent preview builds shown..I'm surprised nobody has picked up on this

If u check out some of the current previews on YouTube there seems to be an obvious downgrade here alas loss off colour and detailed textures. Sorry not got time to post screenshot comparison

Yup, also Sony didn't double down on marketing for AC like they usually did, rightfully so imo.

It will be a decline for the franchise no doubt.

for me: the more modern the period, & the architecture, the less i'm interested. for whatever reason :) ...

still thinking an expanded pirate-based spin-off would do better (& be more fun)...

edit: see above! :) ...

The lack of marketing is disturbing for an AAA.
It's the first year I don't recieve multiple e-mails from Ubisoft (throught Ubishop) about the release of their AC game.

I loved what they were doing with AC Initiates before the release of AC Unity. It was a perfect way to expand the modern time plot and there was pretty much everything about the lore of the IP. They were developping a third faction (The Initiates) and it would have been a great way to find something fresh to do with the IP concerning modern time. But they killed it with the ugly and non-functionnal new version at the release of AC Unity.

I feel like this is said/"wondered" in every AC:Syndicate thread. It's understandable that people are going to be wary of the series after last year, and I bet Ubisoft is aware of that and waiting till launch to see if it's worth pushing based on the reaction and reviews.

The combo of a game every year and then not everyone of them being awesome = at some point the hype is going to deflate. You can bounce back from Revelation not being as good as AC II and Brotherhood but then AC III wasn't as good as everyone hoped. Black Flag perked up the series again but then Unity and its Micro transactions and bugs has deflated it again. I used to get hyped for a new AC but at this point I am thinking - I'll get it cheap afterwards. No need for Day One for me.

Is the unfinished glitch-fest that is Unity entirely to blame? Do people not dig the Victorian setting? Are we just at that point where there have been so many Assassin's Creed games now that we've reached overkill? I'm curious.

It's not just you. No one really gives a shit. And the cause is probably a combination of what you wrote. Victorian setting isn't that interesting after Paris and we already know how the game will play. There's no attachment to the story and characters because they keep on resetting everything and Unity was ass. I am cautiously interested in the carriages and grappling hooks but that's about it. I'll probably buy it around E3 2016 for $10-15.
I feel bad because Syndicate is actually Quebec's baby and I worry Ubisoft will sledge them for poorer than expected sales because Montreal fucked up Unity
No need to worry. If Quebec City screws up badly, they'll just get sent back to the assembly line, while Montreal or whoever leads future games. However, the game would have to be worse than Unity for that to happen.

It's going to be interesting to see how Syndicate will do. The "hype" [or better: general interest] seems at an all-time low, but the brand itself is still crazy popular so perhaps it doesn't need truckloads of marketing. It is Assassin's Creed after all, people know it's coming and people know what to expect.

Which is also the game's greatest weakness, I suppose. Every single gameplay video has me thinking "been there, done that". Not the setting per se, but the gameplay mechanics. Not to mention the strange additions like the rope and the game's bizarre definition of "stealth".

Perhaps this is the wake-up call the series and Ubisoft need to get back to the drawing board, take it to the next level. Because what they're currently doing isn't going to cut it much longer.

I actually looked up the release date earlier this morning and I was shocked to see it was coming out this Friday. I have played every single AC game to date, so I will most likely pick Syndicate up too. At some point, and definately not for 60 euros.

Marketing has not even started yet, not that I can notice at least. While I would appreciate this IP to die / rest and make room for something new, I'm afraid that a short tv spot and few advertising here and there will do the trick again. Perhaps they believe AC doesn't need more effort at this point, it sells itself. Or maybe they're ashamed of the product compared to the big titles coming this fall.. :D

Lmao I think people are being way too optimistic about what Ubisoft will do if the game flops

I expect they'll just go for the jugular and make an Assassin's Creed V that focuses on Ezio again someway somehow

I saw earlier it's out next week and was genuinely surprised. Rainbow Six has had more promotion which pretty much sums up the quality of the game.

After AC3 I went off the series. Heard good things about IV but I didn't really feel the urge to play it. Unity looked uninteresting to me but Syndicate looks a little better. Maybe I'll bite at some point if it's received well.

Yeah, seems that way to me as well. Still, AC is a big name in the industry so even in the worst case scenario I expect Syndicate to sell reasonably well. But this could be the beginning of some sort of a long-term decline if Ubisoft doesn't shake things up in some way.

In any case, will be interesting to see what happens with the franchise in the future.

Yearly iterations always pay for the mistakes of their predecessors.

There's also a serious case of brand fatigue setting in for many of the core fans who have been following the series from the start. Something like 20 games in 8 years is a lot of saturation.

That said, I have no doubts it'll do well in the mainstream.

I've seen more threads about how little hype there is than actual hype.

EDIT: Reads like I'm criticising the thread, I'm not, its a valid topic. I've just seen this question asked more than once and I find it quote amusing. Ubisoft really has taken this franchise into the shitter.

Yeah but this is NeoGAF talking. Once the Regular Joes see in the Best Buy ad that it's coming out that week, copies will be flying off shelves at a brisk pace.

It's already on a discount for 35% off on sites like GMG, but I'm still not interested.

Not seeing any discounts on GMG, it's full price there. And Uplay only. :/

I've seen more threads about how little hype there is than actual hype.

I was gonna say, how many posts have we seen lately about how Syndicate will be released just as broken as Unity? There's hype here, it's just all been negative.

I would buy one set in feudal japan or ancient china. In general the gameplay and especially the quest structure of the franchise is in dire need of some innovation.

I think they really dropped the ball on desmond though. Modern setting was so interesting in assassins creed 1.

This might just be me, but I think it's pretty telling when I see a Jack the Ripper game, get excited, and then immediately lose interest when I find out that it's DLC for the next Assassin's Creed game.

And I like Assassin's Creed. It has simply run its course due to over-exposure and the repetitive checklist structure of the series doesn't help. It should have never been an annual franchise. Shouldn't have even been in the cards. You know how people really liked Assassin's Creed II, that came out three years after the original but actually made improvements rather than being the exact same thing again only 12 months later?

Yeah, something to do with that.

Brotherhood added multiplayer and allies
Blackflag had all that battleship crap

As someone who stopped at Brotherhood, what exactly did AC3 and Unity do that was new? What is Syndicate doing for that matter.

Let's just say it. Black Flag should've been a new franchise that has nothing to do with Assassin's Creed and they should build on that.

Can't wait to see how it'll sell though compared to unity. Larger install base and all.

I loved back flag and was hoping for pirate creed to happen, but for some odd reason they never even released rogue on ps4/one. :(

Series has been running on fumes for a while, and after the massive problems of last years game i think even the fumes are getting blown into the wind at this point.

Even a Watch Dogs 2 would have garnered more attention and momentum, despite the tepid reception of the first.

Yeah but this is NeoGAF talking. Once the Regular Joes see in the Best Buy ad that it's coming out that week, copies will be flying off shelves at a brisk pace.

While it's true that GAF is barely a reliable barometer for hype or general interest, I've seen a lot of negative sounds from communities like Twitch and the likes as well.

This is the first time that everywhere I go, I see people shrug about a new AC.

Let's not kid ourselves though, the game will still sell like hotcakes compared to many other games, but that's the strength of the brand.

Actually didn't mind Unitys mechanics and gameplay , but not a fan of what they are doing for the next one (gangs etc).

As with most assassins creed games these days I will buy when it's abit cheaper .

I used to buy day 1 but it just gets more and more tedious every year .

I've seen ZERO hype for this game. It's weeeeiiird man. It also feels like Ubisoft isn't really marketing it like previous ACs.

They need a setting that makes me " oh i kinda want to explore that place "

Right now , london victorian doesn't make me interested.
I'll get it on the cheap once the bugs will be ironned.

Brotherhood and blackflag will be the highlights of the franchise and i don't think they will be able to top these 2 anytime soon.

I feel like unity had some great sections , most noticeably the time portals (nazis) .

Would be way more hyped if his was a full nazi style setting .

I have a feeling Ubi marketing wise is taking a break this year. Since they figure it's better to push harder on whatever the next title is. Since if rumors are true that one is supposed to be a big shift.

Can't believe the game is out next week. I've seen no hype for it on any site. I might try it when the price drops as I like the setting.

First, good AC games are the exception, not the rule. Strike one.

Second, cool as Victorian London may be, it has already served as setting for some of the best fiction ever created. So the setting has already been done better than Syndicate could ever hope to do. Strike two.

Third, Unity was a disgrace even though it had an even better setting. The near zero downtime between them doesn't inspire confidence in Syndicate's quality. Strike three.
