Indie Games 2015 [October] Let's talk about anything Indie!

Well, Monday sale is here (Steam sure has a lot of sales going on) and Feist is 33% off, cheapest price ever... so that makes up for Cryptark price rise. Buying both

Guns, Gore & Cannoli is on sale again and got updated with Versus Mode

Bought Feist (currently 33% off) and played for 25 minutes or so. I never played anything quite like it. Looks like LIMBO but isnt. It has combat. You can grab certain elements such as sticks and rocks,... to attack the creatures and other things to help you progress. Everything on the game is after you and combat feels very tense. Those flies and giants are rough. But everything so far is manageable and capturing a fly and shooting with it is... satisfying, the game feels satisfying after you beat certain sections (two flies and a giant is... though). I loved what I played so far. Now to walk my puppy and later going in with Cryptark. Playing with a good pad feels so comfortable. Steam is awesome...

The Purring Quest
I played this game in an small video game's expo this weekend and I liked it a lot (and I'm not fan of the cats). A 2D collect-a-ton platformer with gorgeous hand drawn animations, funny mechanics like high and long jumps, hide against dogs, mini-games and cool music.

I talked with them and seems that the game is finished and will be released this next month or early december.

Also, the team is really awesome and a % of the sales will go to support animal welfare groups.

Cryptark is really sweet. Love how you can tackle with the enemy ships with different approaches, and disabling every system before taking the core is sweet. Controls are very good and tight (well, its a pad, no surprise there) and the graphics, atmosphere and music are impressive. Second Early Access game I play (the other is Nuclear Throne) and more than satisfied with it.

Rayman Legends is amazing as always, brilliant and one of the best platformers around. And to my surprise Uplay is not that cancer most think, works... good enough. And also read so many reviews complaining that they didn't get a key and couldn't play it.... not true.

Next in line are Galak-Z and Ori, paycheck incoming, great gaming times ahead :D

It is Adam's last few hours.
Trapped in the bones of his house you will un-leaf Adam’s life,
exploring the world through his eyes.
Everything hints at Adam's past, his years have been long and path well trodden.
His story is baked into the bricks.
No one ever came from nothing and no one ever leaves that way.

My Quick Look on Kingdom:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx25K_bgHfg

header.jpg

Quick Impressions: Before I begin, it's technically a spoiler to read anything about Kingdom. The game is obtuse and slow on purpose. It's designed this way so that the fun of the game is in the exploration. And even though I really dislike games that pad game length with nonsense filler, Kingdom uses the speed of the game as a mechanic. It took me 21~ hours to beat the game.

Kingdom is a real-time strategy game (with permadeath) where the playable character cannot attack or direct his troops. Instead you can only recruit more people and upgrade your fortress. After recruiting people from remote camps, you have to assign them jobs.

There are four jobs. Five if you consider the different states of the archers. Again, this info is spoilery.

Workers - The only class that can build or repair structures. The only weapon they can fire is the trebuchet.
Farmers - Can only generate money and will not attack.
Archers - In Defensive mode, they are able to "Hunt and Gather" which is the only resource (gold coins) you need to collect.
Archers - In Offensive Mode, can only be toggled by creating knights. Every Knight that is created will convert three of your defensive archers to offensive archers. Offensive archers will not Hunt and Gather.
Knights - The last class to unlock. They can only be sent to do battle once you have a flag raised on either end of your fortress. They are primarily used as a wall to protect your offensive archers, but they can attack anything directly in front of them.

The game has no story, but it's presentation is stellar. The OST juxtaposed against the chunky yet serene pixel art produces this almost zen-like symphony. It is a rare game that can so purposefully 'waste' my time yet pull me in to unravel its mysteries.

Additionally, for the people with disabilities or for parents reading this, the game can be played one-handed. So you can hold a child in one arm and use the arrow keys on the keyboard with the other. This is a killer feature in terms of easy accessibility.

Please try to limit how much you read into this game if you're interested. Only look for walkthroughs and other things if you are completely stuck. Again, learning how to beat the game is the 'fun' of the game.

Highly Recommended

Now that I bought almost everything I wanted it feels so good (even more after regaining my beloved Rayman Legends, I dont miss my PS4 anymore, phew). Thanks so much for the suggestions people, much help. Going to have a blast with those :D

Waiting for my paycheck for these: Ori and the Blind Forest and Galak-Z. Wish I could buy Ori right now but my monthly budget for games is limited.

Edit:Hmmm....Compulsive...Side...trying...to...escape... What do you say GAF, spend my last 20$ on Ori or wait until I get paid? xD

I would at least hold off till the sale(if there is a Halloween one that is) - it was down in price in the summer sale so worth waiting now you have some quality stuff to play.

Yeah, yes you are right now I have a bunch of really awesome indie games and Rayman Legends, so I have a lot of time and can wait for the rest of my wishlist to go on sale :D

Also keep in mind Frost there are more free games out there for PC than you could probably ever play, more coming out daily. Keep digging through the old threads and you'll have plenty to keep you busy until sales come around. This is usually my favorite time of year. I love horror movies and games and Halloween brings marathons of scary movies and game bundles. Besides the BundleStars current one, not seeing a whole lot of specials yet. Hoping some more good ones pop up soon.

More free games is an understatement :p

I'll put it this way. More Ludum Dare entries released this year alone than the entire Steam library since its store's inception

So Kingdom is like the "A Dark Room" of 2D RTS games? Have you heard of/played A Dark Room?

I've played A Dark Room, though I never finished it. It's kind-of similar though the big difference is that there are way less resources, just coins and recruits, and mismanaging any of those two resources, even a little bit will make it very difficult to actually beat the game.

It's actually a pretty hardcore game with timing being very critical when you are forced to move so slow.

Well, I meant in the sense of how
A Dark Room starts deceptively simple and then gradually unfolds into a full fledged RPG. Your comments on going into Kingdom without knowing much reminded me of that, since half the fun of A Dark Room was going in blind and discovering how the game evolved

Oh. Then yes.

So anyone else playing Downwell?

I put some time into it on my iPhone. It seems okay and well made and controls well and all that, but the random level generation is a little slapdash and dull so I'm finding it harder and harder to go back to. I don't regret giving the designer money but I doubt it will be on my phone for much longer.

So anyone else playing Downwell?

I played it quite a lot the first day or two it came out, it's really fantastic! I've beaten it on normal and gotten close to beating it on hard, but that's a massive challenge. Highly recommended to anyone who likes action platformers and/or roguelites.

Where'd you learn about the launch sale?

Here:
http://www.pcgamer.com/galak-z-pc-release-date-arcade-mode/

17-Bit plans to release Galak-Z on Steam on October 29 for $20, with a 20 percent discount at launch. We'll be playing more of the beta build over the next two weeks. The season five DLC, which will be free for both PC and PS4 owners, isn't launching simultaneously with the PC release, but according to Kazdal, it's still on its way.

Has anyone checked out Fig's new game posted today?

https://www.fig.co/campaigns/anchors-in-the-drift

It's a new IP from 5th Cell. I'm not too familiar with that developer. But the weird thing is that they're trying to crowdfund a free to play game. Has that ever been done before? My common sense is asking me why would anyone fund a game that's going to be free on release. And yes, I know they have perks in the reward tiers, but I can't shake off that odd feeling. Then again, Fig is an investing/crowdfunding platform so I guess they might be targeting VC investors. It still seems so weird to me.

5th Cell is the Scribblenauts dev

And yes, it's been done several times. Most notable MMOs or Duelyst

Yeah, I know about them but I've never played their games. They're not really what I'm into.

A free to play game still seems so strange to crowdfund. But as expected their page is doing well. 45 backers and $75k in funding. Fig is not a crowdfunding site, it's a free advertising site to attract venture capital investing with a crowdfunding donation plate slapped on it.

Eastward, Towards The Violent Light - Free (PC)
east.png

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/459d2cf07c114fc905936fd0fe7b5b54

Loosely inspired by Stephen King's Dark Tower, 'Eastward...' is a long term survival/adventure game, that is about pushing forward and surviving in the randomly generated environment. As a nomad, the player must follow the path through a landscape ravaged by an ancient cataclysm. To survive in the world the nomad must: Avoid or battle the remaining mutated inhabitants of the world, find scarce food and water sources and journey as far as they possibly can. Is there an end to the road?

Found a game (I planted my flag there xD) called Super Time Force Ultra, is it good? Sure looks like is fun to play.

Super Time Force? Yeah its good, although don't go in expecting a fast paced Contra style shooter. It can be that in places but more often then not it dissolves into a (fairly brutal at times) logic puzzle shooter where you have to really think about how to maximize damage on the enemies. Well worth checking out.

Thanks! Added to the wish list. Like your description... fairly brutal heh :D

Also found another game that looks way better: Escape Goat 1 & 2. Looks awesome. Which one is better? I like more the pixel art of the first one but the second seems more fledged.

They're both awesome. I'd play in order so you can see how the sequel expands on what made the first game so good.

Kingdom is gorgeous, GAF. The pixel art is good on its own but oh god I love the lighting effects and weather. And those reflections in the water!

Replaying Super Meat Boy on PS4. That game is still so good.

Discovered a podcast that might interest the regulars here

The Short Game

It's a podcast about shorter experiences, so that means 99.9% indie games outside of the ones on Tomb Raider and Zelda

Each episode is around an hour long, and have covered everything from Brothers and Year Walk to The Beginner's Guide and Her Story.

Kitty Horrorshow has a glowing writeup and interview on a non-gaming focused site. Really happy to see that. A lot of the gaming and indie related sites are just echo chambers. Things like this bring so much visibility to the whole scene in a good way. Very, very cool.

After trying the beta of Escape Goat 2 there was only one thing left to do: Buy it, but first the first one. That was some dope puzzle platforming :D

Two cool Steam games coming in 2016

Death´s Gambit... http://store.steampowered.com/app/356650

Ray's The Dead... http://store.steampowered.com/app/251650/
Haven't heard of the latter, but yeah Death's Gambit looks awesome. Adult Swim is publishing it

But my favorite upcoming indie game from Adult Swim (actually my favorite indie game, period) is Rain World

Runner-up would probably be Tarsier Studio's Hunger. I needs it
