Life is Strange | Spoiler Thread

Sure the ending was predictable, but I'm totally fine with that. If they tried to do "unpredictable" it probably would have gone off the rails and crashed and burned pretty spectacularly. It's the execution that matters, and I thought they did a great job.

I knew the reason the tornado being there would be dumb...but come on. It doesn't need to be a time tornado with the twist "it was YOUR fault all along!" The whole alternative realities twist is also just thrown out there and not explained all that well.

Thought it was pretty clear why Warren would be at Chloe's funeral. He went to support Max who he's friends with (and loves), and because he seemed that from the scene at the diner her he also had a friendly relationship with Joyce on top of it. Same with Kate, who is Max's friend and would go to support her.

Victoria being there doesn't really shock me that much either, but in my playthrough she and Max became friends. Seeing as Max carried all the knowledge with her and was able to prevent Kate from even considering suicide when everything was said and done, it's not a stretch to think she went and re-mended fences with Victoria too.

wow what a ride

gtw i gave Warren no affection (as it should be) and sacrifices Arcadia bay

So, I just finished replaying episode 5 using my other game save where I basically do everything the opposite of my main one. I have to say, when you go into episode 5 without any expectations of the kinds of new, earth-shattering, shocking events or revelations we saw in previous episodes, it's actually better than I thought.

Also, now that I've played the sacrifice Chloe ending, I'm stunned at how much better it is than the other. Like, even though I take issue with the dichotomy of either saving Chloe or saving everyone else, the sacrifice Chloe ending is *really* good.

Kinda expected the Chloe or everyone else choice, but didn't bother me. I sacrificed Arcadia Bay and after watching both endings I think sacrificing Chloe is the better one, but don't regret my choice.

Also, Warren gets a hug but nothing more.

I think its pretty obvious that they started straining the games budget in Episode 5, and were stopped by time restraints. The save Chloe ending makes this really clear

I only have one question. Why was Warren at Chloe's funeral? I don't remember them being friends.

I figured Kate may be thankful for the exposure that the accident caused.

You often go to funerals, not for the deceased, but to support the surviving friends and family. Warren goes to support Max, and maybe Chloe's Mom who he knows from the diner.

His full quote makes it sound like yeah, they didn't seem to quite stick the landing on the save Chloe ending because they weren't sure what to show:

"The ending where Chloe lives does not feel ambiguous to me. You sacrifice everyone for Chloe, they leave together, saying they will be together. I don't know, maybe that was a mistake but to me it was clear enough, and beautiful. This kind of choice and sacrifice you do it for love, I didn't feel it was necessary to show more as the message and feeling felt powerful enough. And their smiling in the car felt enough to me to induce what will happen next. Sorry if this wasn't showed enough though.
I also thought that with all the destruction and death it would not have been the right moment for a kiss. This will happen after the ending, the next days, to me this is where it is leading for sure. And this is also the point, their relation is so strong and the player connected to Chloe if he did this choice, so I didn't think anything more had to be shown, because the player knew how both characters felt.
And to be honest we thought a lot about more variations in the car ending, but the production reality and budget also kicked in, so we tried our best to make it work having in mind what I told you. But for sure this ending is only the beginning for Max and Chloe, like in a good book what happens next is also in your own imagination :)"

Having played through both I thought they were powerful in their own ways but I prefer the sacrifice Chloe ending personally.

All just my own opinions of course.

Put very simply; there is a good ending and there is a bad ending.

The whole of episode five is meant to teach the player that no matter how Max tweaked events she was not going to be able to fix everything, the only thing Max can do is make her choice and live with it. As Dontnod warns at the start of every episode, choices will have consequences.

The five episodes are meant to help Max choose the right choice, to save thousands of lives and Arcadia Bay. To save Chloe and abandon the town, I can't help but feel it is the wrong choice, but its Max's choice to make. Maybe whatever love Chloe and Max have between them will endure the bleak future, but I have my doubts.

Who gave Max her powers and why? Rachel? The Doe? Balthazar? The Silent Hill Gods?

Its pure guess work because its not important to the story, but the best option is the time powers are related to the Native American voodoo suggested through the game, Rachel appearing as her spirit animal the doe suggests they have some supernatural presence in the world.

A gift from the Universe. Without the powers Max and Chloe would have never reconnected in Chloe's final week. The week is an apology from the Universe for handing Chloe such a shitty hand in life, just because it isn't the main timeline doesn't mean it didn't all actually happen. Fate meant Chloe would suffer tragedy and unfortunately this led to her making bad choices in life which eventually lead to her death, something which can't be avoided without terrible consequences. Chloe's final week is an apology from the powers that be, who I believe chose Max because they believed in the end she would set things right and make the right choice. Its also Chloes last chance to do something positive and help counter the Jefferson evil in Arcadia.

The game hints numerous times that her powers are turning her brain into soup, but nothing comes of it. Also, she never runs out of "time juice" again except with that time with Kate, uh?

Running out of time juice is a warning shot from the Universe to tell Max to stop fucking around with the powers, Kate and her fate is a serious warning no matter the outcome and Max does take her powers more seriously from then on. The powers damaging Max is a clear message that she can't change thing.

Does Max still have her powers?

With Chloe dead, the Tornado avoided and the source of evil removed from Arcadia, I doubt, but I bet she will never even try to use them again either way.

In the other ending, yes, and if Max continues to mess with time she will cause an even bigger disaster #darkestimeline

What happens to the various side characters? You can save them during the tornado, but nothing comes out of it.

In the good ending they were never in danger, and as we see at Chloe's funeral they are somehow all brought together, positively.

In the bad ending I don't think any of them get saved, Chloe and Max just make straight for the lighthouse.

What was the cause of the whales/birds/etc dying? The moon? Just Max?

Max, more warnings from the universe to stop.

Replayed the episode with my second save, formerly titled Kate's Dead. Strangely, this feels like the episode with the least dialogue variations based on your previous decisions. Liked the pacing more on my second playthrough though.

If I had to make a list of episodes from best to worst, it'd probably go: 4, 3, 1, 5, 2.

The reason Warren and the other characters were at the funeral, when they logically probably shouldn't have been, was probably because the budget ran dry. They wanted to show those characters again, but they didn't have the time/resources to give them their own scene.

What's the name of the song that played if you sacrificed Chloe? It was excellent.

Anyways, I really enjoyed the episode although it's always funny to see people's complaints and how I never even noticed or cared about them. Too absorbed in the moment to moment story to think about all the possible situations and permutations of what could have happened. Although it is unfortunate that people had bugs show up stopping their progress. I was playing on PC and it was smooth sailing for me.

It's definitely my GOTY. It will probably get snubbed in favor of Fallout, Bloodborune, or Phantom Pain. But it doesn't matter. All that matters is that I got to play it and enjoy it.

I regret choosing to save the bay. It felt like the right thing to do but then again Chloe was pretty much the only character I cared about. Maybe I could reload but it doesn't feel right. Should've been selfish this time. I feel so bummed out.

Max's and hers fulture would've been a dark one but, damn it, it would've been theirs. :(

And seeing fucking Warren at the funeral... UGH

Episode 5 was... hella satisfying

I liked both endings, but the sacrifice Chloe ending really affected me on an emotional level. It felt like the "true" ending in a way, and it was a nice way to close the series.

And that kiss. About damn time. Does it always happen or do you have to express interest in Chloe?

I liked the ending too. And yes, you have to express interest in Chloe to get the kiss, otherwise they just have a hug.

Only thing that bugs me about the ending is why Max didn't attempt to save people from Arcadia Bay by warning them about the storm... Hell even a simple "The Lighthouse is safe! Come to the Light House if you want to live, the storm doesn't reach that far?"

All Max had to do was On Monday make a PSA. Hey this shit is gonna happen on Friday. Leave the fucking town. Don't believe me? On Tuesday it's gonna snow. Wednesday Whales are gonna be beached. On Thursday an Eclipse. On Friday double moon. If you still stay in town after I predict all this and warned you, GG.

The choice of sacrificing EVERYTHING for Chloe just... Seems to be so bad when you realize that Chloe and Max live. It was my impression that Max and Chloe would die together, along with their town. Allowing those two to live is so... What.

Like... How the hell could Max and Chloe even live on knowing they literally kills thousands all because they were two childish and selfish to just... Let go.

Other than that ending.... Game of the Year. Fucking loved the game.

Told David what happened to Chloe and didn't bat an eye when he blew his (Jefferson's) brains out.

Sacrificed Chloe, because that's the way it should be.

Really good closer, though I kinda hated the last little section. 8/10 for the entire series.

Damn those feels man! I thought well I chose Chloe over Arcadia Bay. I mean it was a good ending. But after watching the ending where you sacrifice Chloe...I feel like this is the "true" ending. Max finally accepts that there was no real way to prevent Chloe's death (I mean apart from sacrificing a whole town). She died when we saved her dad, she died the first time whe met her, she died no matter what. In the end Max realizes this as she sacrifices Chloe. She couldn't prevent her death but at least she has all those memories with Chloe and she also saved a lot of lives. This is the true ending for me.

Love this game. Easily my GOTY!

I haven't seen to many people bring this up, it's quite a passive moment for Max, but Nathan's final voicemail, that's fucking tragic, man. He's clearly just a poor guy that really needs some sort of mental help, he's clearly an asshole, but the pressure of his father combined with Jefferson's twisted influence makes things infinitely worse. Nathan might have got it worse than anyone in the end.

I kissed her earlier, but I only got a hug. I guess it's because I kissed Warren as well.
Man, I knew that was mistake.

I don't think it was just that -- kissed Chloe in episode 3, hugged Warren. I assume it's got something to do with the accumulation of Chloe favored choices throughout the series -- Perhaps stuff like picking Chloe over Kate when Kate calls in episode 2, stepping in and taking the blame for the joint in episode 1, I assume just backing her in the majority of scenarios triggers it.

David kills himself after he hears the news about Chloe? O_o

Is that what happens if you mistreat David the entire game? Does all the pressure and stress finally get to him and he gives in when he realizes he failed his family, and himself?

Damn... my playthrough I kept comforting him and was so happy he just sat down to grieve.

I think Chloe is just meant to die and things would keep escalating until she is dead.

That part really sucked yeah. You could tell that like most of the other side characters (except Brooke who was pretty much just a thirsty, salty jackass) Nathan had layers. When he finally realized Jefferson played him, his first (and last) act was to apologize to Max and try to save her life. That says a hell of a lot about his character to me.

Yep. The "save Chloe" folks would very likely be having disaster follow their Max wherever they went if the game kept going; it's like Final Destination. She's gotta go. The point of Max's powers in the grand scale was to show her that she's powerless, even when she thinks she isn't. But that's not to say that their journey was for nothing, because Max will still carry all the memories with her. Additionally, if not for the week of time travel she may never have warmed to the supporting cast the way she did except for maybe Kate since they were friends beforehand. She needed to have the journey, even if Chloe's still dead at the end of it. It wasn't for nothing.

Could you elaborate on Brooke, I'm not sure I completely put her character together -- or at least specifically what she did to make her fairly irredeemable, I started tunnel visioning a bit in later episodes, ignoring some optional conversations in favor of the core plot.

Brooke initially looks like she's neutral or even friendly with Max. But as time goes on with her (whether you warm to Warren or not) she becomes more and more catty and desperate, either lording over you that she's doing stuff with Warren or making a point that you're doing stuff with him because she's salty. Not a very good person all in all because she lets her jealousy rule her, even Victoria has her moments where she's kind to Max and she's supposed to be the heel.

I just finished now.
I chose to sacrifice Chloe in the end. It was hard to do, but overall, it felt like the right thing to do.
I was in tears by the end, I think it was the kiss Max and Chloe shared.
I also wonder if that happens to everyone if they pick to save Arcadia Bay? (sorry, not read the thread recently).
Definitely my GOTY. Dontnod, well done.

No he doesn't. He blew Jefferson's brains out is what he meant by that.

edit: too late.

You can also sense Nathan's troubled character with the way he reacts to Chloe's death. He acts like it was unexpected, tries to get her to move, and panics. Initially I thought it was because he was afraid of getting caught or punished, but after learning more about him his actions have a lot more nuance to them.
