Halo 5 Multiplayer Coverage! (no campaign spoilers)

To each their own, a map could be the most bland shit in the world and I wouldn't care if it played well. The gameplay is what hooks me, not the art.

Why bother with aesthetics at all then? They should just have lines and shapes, forget even putting textures.

I think the static images look cluttered but the maps in motion look less so. Viewing the maps in 3D motion makes a big difference. Playing it as well. Just my opinion though.

I felt it a bit in the beta, I don't know if I'm gonna have the same issue with the full game.

Except that it's no longer P2P. There's absolutely no chance of me getting host and messing with everyone else's connections. At worst what I do in game might take a split second longer to register and what I see on my screen might be delayed (for instance I might be shot around a wall on my screen... but that's not my real position). That's not game breaking. But okay, 343i wants Halo 5's Arena mode to be ultra competitive and there's no room for any kind of error. Fine.

But Warzone and apparently customs? Fuck off, 343i. Let me play with my friends if I want to. Every other game does it. This is totally disregarding that Australian servers in most games are usually dead as hell too. So basically I'm going to be stuck in a lobby for millions of years searching for players that don't exist.

The aussie servers should be populated enough once this launches no? I was wrong, there is no lag compensator in halo, so you wont really ruin it for others. But you will get reamed in halo if you are playing out of region.

I would wait until next week. As for me being a European... I love this decision. Great choice 343

Yeah, Oz will be very populated on launch.

This.

Can't wait to play lobby simulator 2015 in a week or so. Maybe I'm overreacting, but most of my online friends are in different countries. If this is true then they've just ruined any chance of me playing this game's multiplayer for any extended period of time. Will play campaign and return.

I don't understand. Isn't the whole point of dedicated servers that the person with the bad connection will have a bad experience during a match, and not other people in the same match?

Man the multiplayer looks so good in this game. As someone who has never brought any Halo, this is the game that is pushing me over the edge to go out and buy an xbox one!

No. Dedicated servers = low ping. Ping = lag. Small lag.

By locking the Azure dedicated servers to max 100ms lag, it means all players are always within 5 frames of the server.

Is it confirmed the 100ms ceiling? Because that for me is great news

Sure. But if every other game I've ever played with region matchmaking or servers is anything to go by, then it will fall off incredibly quickly. Even MCC is still a pain in the arse to find any matches when I'm not with people from other countries.

Honestly, color options will go a SUPER long way towards making forge maps look exponentially better. I personally believe that it is the single most important visual addition to Halo 5 Forge. With color alone you can create visual flow and interest using even the most basic of shapes. Mirror's Edge did an amazing job at showing the versatility of color on simple geometry in the Time Trials DLC pack.

Personally I can't really place my current problem with the new forge's look as I'm not well-versed in graphic/rendering terminology, though have a look at this video of the forge launch map Orion. Obviously this isn't a totally fair representation as launch forge maps have always been kinda shitty, the map is clearly old as it was in the beta, plus Forge isn't even complete yet so a lot may improve upon release, but the current aesthetic is really unappealing. I think my dislike of it stems from the material/texture it's using, which looks really sterile and seems to be lit strangely. The autumn lighting of that Alpine variant definitely isn't helping either. It just seems really devoid of personality right now. You're right that colours will go a long way, but I think new forge is seriously crying out for some different textures. Even ultra simple Team Fortress-style would improve the look and charm immensely.

The MCC matches me with everyone everywhere all the time and shouldn't really be the benchmark.

I have a feeling that next week once it is live and populated, and when you are playing low latency game after game. You will be to quote Marcellus Wallace "one smiling motherfucker" ...

I like H5 a lot. Multiplayer is fun.

But being told "screw you, you can't play with your friends" is incredibly shitty. Who cares if what I see on my screen is slightly delayed? I understand these kinds of restrictions on ranked playlists - even if I still think it's kinda silly because these are dedicated servers. If I want to disadvantage myself, why not? - but Warzone and customs? Eh.

Of course I'm gonna still try to play with people but if I am locked out of everything then I will move on from this game very quickly.

If I had a say in it, I would prefer we get ~40 well-designed multiplayer maps that just had super clear development shell-like visuals. But I am in the super minority there. I don't give a single fuck how good my multiplayer maps look, just make them play like a fucking dream. Maps would look like the current WIP shells in Unreal Tournament. I actually think they have a visual charm to them that is extremely pleasing :)

Here's some quick shots I captured to explain what I mean:

It's probably the great lightmapping with realistic light bounces/ambient occlusion mixed with big flat surfaces. I think they look great. Also, no visual clutter. Which is something I think Halo 5 struggles with from the footage I've watched so far. But again, I'm in the super minority. It's why I'm looking forward to forge maps; much more visually simple.
I agree that these look really nice, and I think that 40 well designed maps like that would be fantastic, however I don't think there's a developer out there that is capable of designing 40 maps to a high standard. It's better to focus on 10 high quality designs, then spend the rest of dev resources making them look pretty so people don't complain as much.

Can anyone tell me if the Halo community in brazil is large? if i buy this game here will i have a problem finding decent matches?

That theory is good but it will never be sub 100ms 100% of the time, i've already seen streamers get a headshot with the pistol and it's clearly been more then 5 frames before they died.

One finnish player was in a same match with a lot of NA players on Warzone. That is easily 150ms ping. When the population drops low enough, people will get matched outside of their region at least in Warzone.

...the streams are usually at 30fps, I'm not sure how you're measuring that overall. Basically as long as everybody has a decent connection to a central server, and the netcode is good, you will get good performance. That's one of the issues Halo 5 tries to address. It's a step up.

I prefer this look to most of the maps we've had for a while. It's simple, it's clean, and it is indeed charming. The environment is distinguishable from its players and its geometry does not distract from its pathing. I don't imagine the developers returning to this because they want to "art up" their maps, but it should be replicable in Forge this time around.

layout and visual design are independent from one another up to a certain point. when the base geometry comes together, both of them are influencing the other and ultimately response for how a map plays.

The beta matched me a lot of times in US games, while still playable you also get that nagging feeling of stupid lag instead of well played opponent.

It's rarely as simple as what the lagger sees on his screen is a little delayed. High ping players ruin the game for everyone else. If this weren't the case you wouldn't have people using lag switches and things like that to worsen their connection. Enforcing a minimum connection quality that may limit some parties from Arena is a small price to pay if it means no 1 bar opponents, getting shot around corners, BS lag compensation, BS kill trades, etc.

Guys, what should I do? As a HUGE Halo fan I want to purchase H5, but the arena map aesthetic is really off putting. Should I just ignore it and buy the game? I'm torn because everything about the package looks great.

There are a dozen new free maps coming so we might see some really different maps.

You know, after playing two hours of crucible in Destiny yesterday I can safely say that I don't care about the aesthetics about the maps, just as long as they are nowhere near as fucking awful as 90% of the maps in Destiny.

I hope so. I know Warzone has more interesting locations, but Warzone isn't something I will play much.

I am a strong believer that form and function can be symbiotic. Unfortunately, that makes me care a lot about the environment they want me to spend thousands of hours in. Just the pipes and boxes becomes a huge eye sore.

Nature interlaced with technology is what Halo always meant to me (for MP).

As a huge Xenogears fan (love the avatar), I can tell you based off the beta and the three hours of campaign I played, but this game. Once you get used to the controls and the Spartan abilities, you'll be on cloud nine.

Thanks, Xenogears is my favorite RPG of all time (also dat music!). The controls were so clunky in the beta that I am buying an elite for Halo lol.

At my core, I was just hoping for a snowy Arena map. Wanted one good snow map for slayer.

I bet we will get one as dlc. I feel like DLC maps in every multiplayer game have unique aesthetics and just look more fun overall. I hope this is the case with H5.

Yup, Xenogears is amazing. I remember being 12 or 13 years old and constantly playing the demo over and over until the game released. Full of nostalgia...love the game, characters, story, music, and definitely one of my favorite games ever made.

In regards to the controls...it now feel amazing to me. Never would I have thought that holding the L trigger to zoom in would be for me for a Halo game, but it actually works really well. Just have to get used to it...not to mention that you can also change it if you wish.

The music in Halo 5 is absolutely incredible.

And I agree. I love having unique landscapes for multiplayer maps. This is primarily the main thing I loved back in Halo 2 and 3. They had snow, desert, forerunner, jungle/forest, covenant, city, and more maps to change the atmosphere and diversity of multiplayer. I know you said Warzone is probably not going to be something you'll be playing but man...it looks awesome. It's the only game type (and forge) that I haven't played yet. Everyone I talked to who has played it (E3, early press access) has said they've LOVED it...and they are competitive freaks themselves. One of the Warzone maps availble is a snowy map... I wouldn't be surprised if we get one for arena too. The more I play some of the maps, the more I start to appreciate them.

Yea, for some reason we can't have a map that plays well and is built well. Gameplay and Visuals are not so divorced that we have to choose one or the other. They can function independent of one another (good map that looks bad and vice versa), but they are intertwined in many other ways.

I'm seeing pros throw some serious shade on these launch maps. RyanNoob just had a little outburst about how much he "fucking hates" the maps.

Base game seems solid but no one seems to ever drop the pistol which could be a problem.

He was complaining about them yesterday morning too, closed the stream. He's the only one I've seen do serious complaining, who else is saying stuff? I watched Walshy for hours last night, and I know he's not technically a pro anymore I guess, but I never heard him say anything negative.

He's very analytical too so I wonder what his main issue with it is.

Has 343 announced a day for the first competitive tournament? Pros have been playing it every day for 3 years and most of them seem on board with it,, but I don't think we'll know the true state of it until it's played in the wild for that long at that level.

???

You will meet of people that are close to you in the game. This will be great to pad your friend list with people in your region.

I understand that people have friends on other continents. But why the fuck should overs have to suffer? Region locking halo is the best news that I have heard...

I cant wait to play 100% of my halo locally. It is going to be glorious

Halo. Destroying long distance friendships and couch play since 2015

He's also currently getting his ass kicked. Maybe it's just frustration.

Also, seems like he's lone-wolfing a lot. Lots of 1v2 and 1v3 encounters.. Not sticking to his teamies.

Just watched RyaNoob stream a bit. He just seems to have his mind set on not enjoying the game and complains that people aren't playing the way he wants them to be. Literally ended his stream on "I can't take this anymore"

Pretty much every other streamer I've watched is having a good time.

Its an expectations thing...people who aren't pro's or super interested in the high levels of competitive expect maps to look like the rest of the game. I think the team has struck the right balance on straightforwardness...at least they aren't as busy as a lot of the modern call of duty games

No. Dedicated servers = low ping. Ping = lag. Small lag.

By locking the Azure dedicated servers to max 100ms lag, it means all players are always within 5 frames of the server.

Dedicated servers do not mean low ping.

There's typically three types of multiplayer networking models:

1.) Dedicated servers - game simulation runs on a server that is separate from all of the clients and acts as an authority and relay of all game information to each player.

2.) Listen servers - same as the above, but runs on one of the clients. Most Halo games, the Call of Duty series(typically), Gears of War, etc use this model.

3.) Peer to peer - Each client sends game actions to each other peer directly, or through a relay-peer if the peer can not be directly reached. Very very few games actually use this model due to difficulty keeping the game synchronized between all the different player. Awesomenauts -- a MOBA -- uses this model.

Many gaffers seem to think there's two models: Dedicated and peer to peer when in-fact peer to peer is almost never used.

Dedicated servers typically provide the best game experience because the server will have plenty of bandwidth and computational resources to provide a good game experience. Listen servers can be just as good under ideal circumstances, except for having to deal with host migrations when the listen server host leaves.

Not to diminish his complaints, because they may be valid to some degree, but even before Halo 5 released for pros, Ryanoob was complaining all week about other shit. He bailed on Money 8s for MCC because he was salty about something one night. I think that's just his nature.

May I ask why Ryannoob's opinion on this game is important?
Not being mean or sarcastic, just curious.

Destiny must be doing some weird peer to peer system because there are never host migrations...just lag, lag ,lag

The opinion of someone who is good at something and experience to back it up has weight

Pros are not infallible - at all - but theyre more likely to be exposed to and aware of the game's holes than most.

Thats why 343 has a Pro team

He's probably just having a hard time.
