So... If I were to buy a similarly spec'd SP3 with the new type cover, would I have a comparable experience to the SP4?

Reviewers have said that the SP4 itself is an incremental upgrade and suggest that SP3 owners should just get the new type cover, which is a bigger upgrade than the machine itself. The biggest pros for the SP4 are the reduced fan noise, better display and perhaps the pen. If you think that you can deal with fan noise and find a (really) good deal for a Pro 3, then go ahead. The SP3 i3 version isn't recommended at all, though.
The SP4 doesn't have the throttling issue too, which might affect some users.
Running in native resolution and connected to a 1080p monitor, I'm getting a bit of lag from browsing Gaf on the Edge browser while streaming a 1080p video on the monitor above. It seemed to be short lived, but a period of lag spikes none-the-less.
This is on the 256/8GB i5 model.
I'll get my m3 SP4 tomorrow. Can't wait to see what performance is like, but I have pretty lightweight needs with how I use Photoshop, so I think I'm gonna be fine.
have there been any kind of benchmarks for the SP4 m3 released that you know of?
Not yet. My fan is also blaring as well. That's a bit disappointing to hear. Have you tried a different browser?
You may need to our guinea pig![]()
But seriously, if you could run the same benchmarks as the i5 had then we could get a nice view of the difference between them. And probably more importantly your impressions from actually using it.

My SP2 had no problems, however I found an update in the update center. I'm hoping that the issue will be fixed with the update, as I recall my SP2 running a bit funky before its first update too.Yikes...that is really disappointing as I was planning on hooking this up to a monitor and dual screening when I am at home...My 6GB + i5 laptop from 3 years ago has no problem with dual screening and a 1080p video, I'm not sure why this one would.
Has anyone seen shipping movement on a SP4 with 16GB RAM?
My SP4 model is i5/16 GB and shipped out a few days ago. I ordered one within the first few hours it went up on the MS store though.
Ran the updates, and yeah.. I cannot recommend this thing to anyone.
Was browsing while my car is being repaired at a service center. Tablet completely froze--no blue screen or anything. Held the power button and forced a restart. Frozen on the "Surface" screen. Tried a second time, frozen on the Surface screen again.

Edit: Third try it finally worked. This thing is janky as fuck.

No, you have to open the windows update section of the settings and scan for a new update.Forced updates out of the box before you can use it?
Not yet. My fan is also blaring as well.
I downloaded Resident Evil 4 earlier; a waterfall section slowed my SP2 down to a crawl on a really low resolution with the lowest graphics settings. I'll give it a try later to see if it improves and how long it takes to throttle, if it does at all.
Heat wise it's not nearly as hot as my SP2 gets.
I don't have Elder Scrolls Online. Is it F2P?Can you try Elder Scrolls Online, pleeeease. :3 :3 :3

One thing though. I feel like my pen 'clicker' thing has a problem, it's hard to click, like it's sticky or something. I can't even make it go quick enough to take a screenshot. Is this a known problem? The pen in the store wasn't like this, so maybe mine is bad. But maybe you need to like 'unlock' it or something? Like twisting it will pop up the 'clicker'? IDK, if anyone knows what i'm talking about I'd love some tips.
Other than that it seems great so far.![]()

Going to give it a little more time. Actually, I keep having an issue where occasionally I will be typing and the keyboard will momentarily not register my keystrokes. I'm just having a ton of luck with this thing, aren't I?Take it back to the store and get it swapped out. You probably got a defective one.
This glass trackpad blows the old one out of the water.

Charging my wife's M3 now. First impressions so far is I don't like the new power adapter. I like the Pro 3 adapter much better. The only other impression was the new type cover had a strong chemical smell out of the box. Hopefully that goes away quickly.
Are they different? My i5 SP4 review unit has the same adaptor as the SP3 and non-GPU Surface Book.

My SP3 came with the one on the left, but my SP4 came with the one on the right except the label says Pro Windows instead of RT on it. It's missing the USB port and the block is on the outlet rather than having the cord which plugs in. The SP3 adapter was way better and easier to plug in.
So if I wanted to use one as a graphics tablet/occasional editing (videos), would a Surface Pro 3 cut it? What better does the 4 bring to the table?
Well if you draw, etc, SP3 limits to 256 pressure levels with the pen, while the SP4 is 1024.
Did they somehow give me the wrong adapter? My Surface Book with no GPU has the exact same charger as my SP3.
The i5 is perfectly fine. Main issue is the 128GB is limited to 4GB RAM, which could be important depending how large of images you will work with, or video editing effects. Is the i5 a good choice for the SP4? 'Cause I see an i5 128GB for $1,300 and that seems like a good deal to me.
yea I thought the SP3, SP4 and surface book were all supposed to be the same so the new dock works with all of them?
Did they somehow give me the wrong adapter?
So my question is, how is the Surface Pro 4 as a tablet device? The main concerns I have with getting it are that there are few touch based "apps", so when I am out and about or reclining in the sofa it won't be very easy to use. Also, and tying into the above, if I do want to play games on the go I feel like I'd need either a controller or the keyboard due to the lack of touch based games, whereas an iPad or Android tablet would not have that problem.
I love the versatility of the SP4, but first and foremost I need something that can be a good tablet. So GAF, can the SP4 be a full-time tablet and backup computing device?
