Microsoft Surface Pro 4 announced: "better in nearly every way" (The Verge)

I used my new SP4 in class for about an hour and a half. Put it in its carrying case thing, put that in my backpack.

When I got home 45 minutes later I could feel the heat on the outside of the case, and inside was a furnace the Surface was so hot that I'm really concerned. Is it because it got slightly heated when I used it, then the heat was trapped on the case? I put it in sleep mode so I don't think it was doing any extra heating. But I'm also getting the battery drain issue so idk...

Any tips would be appreciated!

haven't messed around with Hello yet.

hmm annoying. Though besides the bus ride in, it sits in a cabinet at my desk until lunch. So if it's waking itself up, it's doing to by itself. The Surface has become self aware.

it sounds like it was on in your backpack. Residual heat wouldn't do that. Possibly waking up on its own

Sometimes when in sleep you'll accidentally turn it back on before putting it in the case, and then it pretty much cooks. Had it happen once when I first got my SP3 but that's it. I think you'll be fine.

looks like we're having the same issue Vault.

I only had the SP3 for 2 or so months and I remember it happening with that from time to time as well.

Yea, I was only actually using it for < 3 hours. And I had a full charge to start the day. When I got home I had like 2%.

That combined with the heating issue, I guess it must be sucking down the juice when not in use.

anyone notice excessive battery drain when screen is off?

Took my m3 SP4 off the charger at 7:30 AM at 100% charge. When I took it out on my lunch at 1 PM (first time turning it on), it was around ~60% charge. (if this was my MBP, it would have gone from like 100% --> 98% during this span turned off).

I used it for ~45 minutes on lunch. It's been in my bag since... used it a few times for a few minutes since then and I'm at 16% charge now.

Not sure if what's happening to you, but my sp3 has terrible battery life on windows 10 when sleeping. For some reason it keeps very warm and drains battery almost as if it was on the entire time.

Disabling the wifi when the tablet is sleeping solves the issue for me.

Go to your power settings and ensure it's actually going to sleep as opposed to just turning the display off.

You can also force it to disable wifi when asleep, can't remember where to set that though.

Just in case anyone is interested, I picked up the new Type Cover with fingerprint scanner last night to use with my new SP3. Windows Hello is wicked fast with the scanner, although I wish I didn't need to create a PIN to use it. I'd at least like to have the option to remove the PIN as a login method on the lock screen.

yep

Edit: Actually my bad. I think it does. I have it installed but I use Cover. It has good touchscreen controls and organization.

Thanks, I'll check both of them out.

I think you can switch out the preference to enter your password by default instead of the PIN. Don't think you can remove the PIN completely though.

ok I'll check out my power settings later tonight.

Just checked my bag and the battery is dead. Roughly 1 hour of using my SP4 today and it's dead.

Come to think of it my desktop has been doing the same thing since upgrading to windows 10
I just shut it down completely now

Not sure if it's related but I had a similar problem with my dell xps 13. Would drop around 40% in the space of around 8 hours, sometimes worse.

The issue was connected standby. I disabled it in the registry which sorted the problem but then the shortcut function buttons wouldn't work to increase/decrease screen brightness until I restarted. Instead I default it to hibernate rather than sleep which is annoying because it takes about about 15 seconds to start up rather than instantaneously.

You can tell windows what wakes your computer from sleep. I believe some network activity can wake up your computer, but you can change that in the options if you so desire.

yeah I had to go into device manager and turn off a whole bunch of stuff that I was able to leave on in 8.1
I still have to shut it down completely because it ignores my settings sometimes

I was pretty excited that MS charged my card and "shipped" my SP4 yesterday as promised, but a day later it's less exciting. So far all they've done is print the label but not hand the parcel to the carrier. So while it's overnight shipping, they are messing with getting that clock started.

Yeah disappointing thing about Microsoft and their Surface Pro line is they don't fix all the software issues, they want to offer a premium device (which it is hardware wise) but they desperately need to fix their software side and customer service to make the whole package feel premium something which Apple nails.

My sp2 when upgraded to 10 also wakes itself up constantly. Extremely irritating

Mine too. It did it in 8 until I turned off "use this device to wake" for the keyboard, but after upgrading to 10 it would wake up constantly regardless so I just set it to hibernate on the power button. Happens to my friend's SP3 too. Widespread issue doesn't even begin to cover how prevalent this is.

Is it still considered "bad" to use hibernate with a SSD?

At least with Win8 and also with my limited experience of 2 weeks of Win 10 on my SP3, if you haven't enabled HyperV, turning the display off is the same as the dreadful connected standby/sleep mode.

If only MS did allow the display to be turned off on its own on what they deem to be a tablet, the quality of my computing life would improve drastically.

The 128GB SP4 m3 model uses an AHCI SSD instead of NVMe.

Dunno if this is true for the Book as well, but just a heads up.

Book is i5 as the base model so hopefully not. That is disappointing to hear - there isnt much price difference between the m3 and the i5, yet the i5 has faster SSD, fan to aid cooling, and a faster CPU. Once again MS seem to be disproportionately gimping the lower end model

Yeah, it looks like I'm definitely going for the i5. More speed, faster GPU, less throttling, faster SSD and USB power out on the charger. All that for just 100 bucks more.

Less throttling? Read the comments about the m3 getting warm to the touch but with that large passive heatsink and the metal chassis as a further heatsink, it shouldn't need to throttle at all. Are there reports of it?

I assumed that the m3 throttles at some point, since the i5 does as well.

Can't believe an issue like that shipped.
It's absolutely ridiculous. Downgrade back to Windows 8 by using the restore option in the settings and you'll be much happier. I cannot believe how nice my SP2 has been since I did that: superior battery life, a lot less glitches, and functions much better as a tablet.

It's a Core M. By definition, isn't it a throttled down Core U processor? :P

Is the CPU basically a core i3/i5? I'm actually curious and can't easily find info on that. The base clock is a lot lower, but it turbos very high and can it still do that in a 4.5w TDP? or is that TDP only sustainable with occasional boost? Obviously there will be cuts elsewhere like the integrated graphics and I think no HEVC decode in hardware? But the gap between 4.5w and 15w is still huge.

Don't think I can, I'm well past the one month for the old folder to be deleted.

Don't forget the gimped power supply too.

Is a screen protector necessary on these things? Read some stories of people getting light scratches on their screens

I've heard that some screen protectors give you a better feel of writing with the pen, but that might not be necessary with the new pen tips.

But I really can't imagine the hassle of applying one on such a large surface (sorry).

Fucking windows 10 man. I have a surface pro 3 and never upgraded from 8 because people have been saying this for months. I don't know if I will ever upgrade, and honestly was a part of the reason I didn't upgrade to a pro 4 right away. Windows 8 works just fine in this regard, and I almost wish you could downgrade the new surfaces to 8

Awesome hardware. Still getting held back by the software. No doubt part of the issues with making full windows 10 the same across tablets and laptops.

I don't have any issues with Windows 10 so far (that aren't in 8) besides this battery drain thing. Though hopefully disabling "Keep connected to WIFI while in sleep" stops that. I didn't bring my Surface to work today though, so we'll see I guess.

I have a Surface Pro 1 (which was always i5 and 4gb ram, I think) and I am pretty happy with the power it offers. I feel that it is on its last legs and I want to upgrade soon. Now I wonder: As I don't need much more power (I use it as a Facebook machine and some basic photoshop/premiere, I occasionally play some indiegames on it. Even the "Tomb Raider" reboot ran on it),
So I wonder how the m3 compares to the old i5 from back then.
I can't afford to spend too much money, so I'm not gonna drop 100 bucks more, if m3 would be enough for my needs. What do you guys think?

I don't like how the screen distorts whenever I write on it. I don't remember my pro 2 doing this. Really distracting.

you will see increased performance going with the m3 SP4 over the SP1. The m3 SP4 is only slightly slower than the i5 SP3.

Why doesn't it lock up? I don't have Windows Hello on and I even moved away from the camera and I still just swipe up and my desktop shows up without me having to put in my password or PIN...

edit: Nevermind, I guess it gives you like a 10 second grace period after closing
