Ben Carson has surpassed Donald Trump and now narrowly leads the Republican field in the race for the nomination in the latest national CBS News/New York Times Poll.

Twenty-six percent of Republican primary voters back Carson, giving him a four-point edge over Trump (22 percent). Support for Carson has quadrupled since August.

The rest of the Republican presidential candidates lag far behind in single digits. Marco Rubio is now in third place (eight percent), followed by Jeb Bush (seven percent) and Carly Fiorina (seven percent). All other candidates are at four percent or lower.

I have to wonder how everyday Republicans feel about this fact. I'm not even sure there is Democrat equivalent I could use to attempt to understand how it'd feel. It must feel like being in some sort of Twilight Zone except you have to pretend everything is A-okay.

Can't wait to see Ben Carson try to explain things he has no clue about against a competent democratic candidate. If he's lucky, he'll have a team of people behind him to make him look smart on political, economic, and world issues.

So far, that doesn't seem to be the case...but some conservatives are just eating that shit up.

...lacks reading comprehension.
If there isn't even a majority Republican candidate, how do they suppose to win the majority at the elections? 26 % to 22 %? That's just ridiculous and shows how bad the situation is.

Everyday Republicans want Carson or Trump

I know, but some part of me just doesn't want to accept that. My brain can't process this, man. I get the Trump fever. History is littered with charismatic people who cater to the lowest common denominator. Carson is like a joke vote making it to the top.

Carson's campaign will fall apart and one of the establishment candidates will grow.

Poor Trump has been in denial about every poll that shows Carson pulling ahead.

Just a reminder not to put too much into this; don't forget around this point in the last election everyone had a brief time polling at the top, including Rick Santorum and Michelle Bachmann.

Carson is basically the perfect candidate for evangelicals.

He's fucking dumb as a rock and backasswards as fuck when it comes to any political issue, which they love. But he's also a brilliant neurosurgeon, which helps deflect criticism of his intelligence.

Plus, he's a black! So they're totally not racist.

if Ben Carson wins the nomination then they are fucked

Trump gives them the best chance to win tbh, which is very slim, but still there

Is this reality?

Wow...

But imagine a second black POTUS in row.

I kinda wonder how states like West Virginia will deal with that. Either voting Democrat (most likely Clinton) or Black POTUS #2. I suspect a lot of people would just stay home.

Good! The higher Carson is in the polls, the more likely one of the other candidates will fuck up and say something overtly racist.

I need more soundbites dammit!

Some people love when a black person co-signs some backwards racist thinking.

Why can you understand Trump's support and not Carson? They're both insane.

Carson will fade. What's uncertain is if Trump will be able to surpass him again or if they'll cancel each other out while Marco Rubio ascends to #1.

Well they're not doing shit so far.

I know he was polling high in Iowa (because lol Iowa), but polling at the front nationally is surprising. I wonder if Trump still has his lead in SC and NH. Either way I think Carson is the flavor of the month, he's going to melt as the frontrunner...but I said the same thing about Trump so who knows. Trump has a lot of ammo to work with for the next debate.

Can't believe the current state of the GOP. Rubio and Bush both made excuses saying "it's October." How does that excuse the candidates that the GOP voters want?
