Wow um...wow. This place is a graveyard. Some of these comments seemed pretty mild actually. I think some were asking questions to? eh.

That said, yes blackface is stupid , yes that dude is stupid for doing it, yes he does look like he was dunked in nutella.

As a German I don't think I had ever heard of the term blackface or its history before I came to NeoGAF, even though it is (in some context) quite common. For example it is often part of the tradition of Sternsinger (Star boys' singing procession), where children dress up as the three wise men and collect for charity, see e.g. here. Unfortunately I don't know much about the history of blackface in Germany, the Wikipedia entry only mentions recent examples. It is an issue that was simply ignored for a very long time in Germany. I think for Germany, linguist Anatol Stefanowitsch put it quite well (regarding how/why blackface is problematic in this context), taken from this German article:

Not going to lie. But Merkel just talking and smiling to a child blackfaced is kind of messed up to me.

Based off the wife's post it seems obvious he wanted to make a Kanye West costume that was as accurate as possible. Then regretted it after realizing how stupid he was.

This costume is a clebrity-mocking gone wrong, not a charicature of African American stereotypes. It does not speak to a larger societal acceptance and perpetuation of broad African American stereotypes in American society, if anything else this is a success story. One man, a nobody - made national news for being a moron and society shamed him into an immediate apology. Like it or not, this speaks to the progress American society has made.

When you look at the rest of the costume I call bullshit on this "accurate" defense.

And no one thought he was really a black man unless they were drunk

But it's not accurate in any way beyond the glasses. That's it. He didn't try beyond that. He threw on some nutella and that stupid sign. He probably spent 20 seconds thinking of the costume.

No it doesn't. America loves making a scene with people like this, but best believe we'll defend the fuck out of the next cop that kills an unarmed black kid.

She said "People really thought he was a black guy".

People got banned even when they agreed with op, so I have no idea what went on here. Apparently it is inconceivable that people are insensitive about a topic out of ignorance, and the easiest way to spread understanding is to mass ban so that nobody dares post anything that might be understood as controversial.

I get that this is an annual discussion on this site, but all things considered, this is not a universal issue that people can just expect everyone to be completely informed about. Hell, there are tons of people in this very thread citing that they weren't sensitive to this being a problem before reading about it on GAF. Luckily they didn't post on the first page of a thread like this before they were completely caught up. I don't get why the topic was even re-opened after the initial locking and ban wave.

Does this extend to people who come in here and start using racial and homophobic slurs? After all, maybe it's not an issue where they're from.

Shows you how far empathy and understanding bends and stretches. I mean being gay isn't illegal in the USA, doesn't mean I can't empathize with Russian homosexuals and their issues.

I suppose I was speaking more to his intentions to mock Kanye West than how successful he actually was in appearing to be mistaken for Kanye West.

Without knowing the intent of the costume, it's not racist. People need to dial down the PCometer
You don't need to be a genius to figure out that it's about his comments on running for president. You just need to know how to read. And you don't need to paint yourself black to laugh as that.

lol at people using their country as an excuse to be ignorant on why blackface is racist. Or that racism needs to have intent. All the excuses have been hilarious, made for an entertaining thread.

whoops.

but seriously, I wonder what person next years resident idiot will emulate. It's beyond amazing that this happens every year. both the insensitive morons who wear the costume and the insensitive forum goers who don't see the issue even when it's been explained time and again. it's that empathy that seems to be missing.

They will post this as a "Gotcha"

Is intent code word for "It doesn't offend me so it doesn't deserve to be discussed"?

Okay, so his intention was to mock Kanye West, and his use of blackface was a part of that mockery, and it has nothing to do with him trying to present an "accurate" portrayal of him. Right?

I'm sorry - I can't parse what you're asking here. I'm saying he intended to mock Kanye West using black face. It's pretty clear he missed his mark in trying to do so in many, many ways.

I go to bed and there's still diet racists shitting up this thread. People are still using the "I am from (blank) and therefore I am ignorant about blackface so let me run my mouth" card?

Third time's the charm I guess for bish. This is some reprehensible shit being said in this thread. Though I shouldn't be surprised.

Or, you know, outside of America where awareness of this is not an explicit part of culture. There were tons of people banned for relatively innocent posts that seemed to come from a genuine lack of understanding of the issue, but I guess it's easier to ban people than engage and educate them.

Nah.

Gaf has always been a DIY forum. DIY being either take the time to figure out if what you're about to post is banworthy or highly offensive on your own, or be banned.

There's simply too much information at our fingertips to use ignorance as an excuse.

Unfortunately, people still use ignorance. Or they don't care about learning, and they use fantastic reasoning like Charlie did so long ago.

How did no one stop this guy from doing it? Does he have no friends?

"Dude you're a school teacher, how about you don't do black face and, honestly, just pick another costume."

People who can't simply Google "black face" probably aren't going to be educated in this thread.

It is such an abhorrent thing defend even in ignorance. It's just not a good look from any angle.

Yet people still do it, and are kicking and screaming when you tell them not to do it. The way the world is. And then they accuse you of being PC brah, or the worst of terms: "SJW".

Why are these kind of threads even allowed is what I wonder. Just ban every discussion about race, put it in the guidelines or something, or lock the threads that discuss the topic.

There can be some good discussion amongst the sea of shit. Unfortunately, the diet racists decide its a good place to have their views heard.

I wasn't talking about the highly offensive posts, or even the ones trying to argue the point extensively. People continuing to argue the point a few pages in should have gotten the general idea by then.

What good would banning discussion about race do? It's good to make people aware that these issues are still around today. We had one guy in this thread say blackface is okay because it's 2015 and we're past racism. That's pure ignorance. If this thread can educated a few people it's done a good thing.

That's essentially what's going on when the majority of the people in the thread who don't immediately say "blackface is wrong 100% of the time, no matter what" get banned.
It's not a discussion if anyone who isn't agreeing gets forced out.

Is it a discussion if everyone is saying the same?

I've never seen so much passive aggressive posters in one thread.
Pretty sure the only passive aggressive people are the ones saying, "Wow I wish I could say how I really feel but I don't want to get banned"

I've learned that this just isn't the forum for controversy. Not necessarily a bad thing. There's such a mod emphasis on promoting healthy discussion that you can't really post without fear of being banned. And I mean that for both sides of any argument, you can be banned for getting too emotional right along with the person that caused you to get that way. I think they just don't want discussions to get out of hand, it makes sense. They want to keep it a place where things are somewhat sane. There are certain topics that you have to tread lightly because they are going to be heavily modded. I feel like they should almost add a warning to the rules thread. Enter hot topics at your own risk, they are heavily modded, and if you don't tread lightly you are liable to be taken out. Some people though. Lmao get over it??? Yeah that guy can just never come back plz

If you think that is what this thread is doing, go for it.

What are you implying this thread is doing? Are you not reading the responses and feeling like some people really need to be educated on this topic?

I didn't see anyone get immediately banned. Bish locked the thread a few hours into it to clean up and opened it back up. Some people just held on tight to their views.
