As a German I don't think I had ever heard of the term blackface or its history before I came to NeoGAF, even though it is (in some context) quite common. For example it is often part of the tradition of Sternsinger (Star boys' singing procession), where children dress up as the three wise men and collect for charity, see e.g. here. Unfortunately I don't know much about the history of blackface in Germany, the Wikipedia entry only mentions recent examples. It is an issue that was simply ignored for a very long time in Germany. I think for Germany, linguist Anatol Stefanowitsch put it quite well (regarding how/why blackface is problematic in this context), taken from this German article:
When you look at the rest of the costume I call bullshit on this "accurate" defense.Based off the wife's post it seems obvious he wanted to make a Kanye West costume that was as accurate as possible. Then regretted it after realizing how stupid he was.
This costume is a clebrity-mocking costume gone wrong, not a charicature of African American stereotypes. It does not speak to a larger societal acceptance and perpetuation of broad African American stereotypes in American society, if anything else this is a success story. One man, a nobody - made national news for being a moron and society shamed him into an immediate apology. Like it or not, this speaks to the progress American society has made.

Wow um...wow. This place is a graveyard. Some of these comments seemed pretty mild actually. I think some were asking questions to? eh.
Does this extend to people who come in here and start using racial and homophobic slurs? After all, maybe it's not an issue where they're from.People got banned even when they agreed with op, so I have no idea what went on here. Apparently it is inconceivable that people are insensitive about a topic out of ignorance, and the easiest way to spread understanding is to mass ban so that nobody dares post anything that might be understood as controversial.
I get that this is an annual discussion on this site, but all things considered, this is not a universal issue that people can just expect everyone to be completely informed about. Hell, there are tons of people in this very thread citing that they weren't sensitive to this being a problem before reading about it on GAF. Luckily they didn't post on the first page of a thread like this before they were completely caught up. I don't get why the topic was even re-opened after the initial locking and ban wave.

And no one thought he was really a black man unless they were drunk
And how was he successful in mocking Kanye West? By painting his face black? Is being black something to be mocked now?I suppose I was speaking more to his intentions to mock Kanye West than how successful he actually was in appearing to be mistaken for Kanye West.
And how was he successful in mocking Kanye West? By painting his face black? Is being black something to be mocked now?
Okay, so his intention was to mock Kanye West, and his use of blackface was a part of that mockery, and it has nothing to do with him trying to present an "accurate" portrayal of him. Right? No he was not and no it is not.
Are you a black Russian? Why do you care?Shows you how far empathy and understanding bends and stretches. I mean being gay isn't illegal in the USA, doesn't mean I can't empathize with Russian homosexuals and their issues.
You don't need to be a genius to figure out that it's about his comments on running for president. You just need to know how to read. And you don't need to paint yourself black to laugh as that.Without knowing the intent of the costume, it's not racist. People need to dial down the PCometer

They will post this as a "Gotcha"whoops.
but seriously, I wonder what person next years resident idiot will emulate. It's beyond amazing that this happens every year. both the insensitive morons who wear the costume and the insensitive forum goers who don't see the issue even when it's been explained time and again.

Is intent code word for "It doesn't offend me so it doesn't deserve to be discussed"?
Okay, so his intention was to mock Kanye West, and his use of blackface was a part of that mockery, and it has nothing to do with him trying to present an "accurate" portrayal of him. Right?
Or, you know, outside of America where awareness of this is not an explicit part of culture. There were tons of people banned for relatively innocent posts that seemed to come from a genuine lack of understanding of the issue, but I guess it's easier to ban people than engage and educate them.
Nah.
Gaf has always been a DIY forum. DIY being either take the time to figure out if what you're about to post is banworthy or highly offensive on your own, or be banned.
There's simply too much information at our fingertips to use ignorance as an excuse.

Unfortunately, people still use ignorance. Or they don't care about learning, and they use fantastic reasoning like Charlie did so long ago.
It is such an abhorrent thing defend even in ignorance. It's just not a good look from any angle.

Why are these kind of threads even allowed is what I wonder. Just ban every discussion about race, put it in the guidelines or something, or lock the threads that discuss the topic.
How many loops is this thread going to go through? It's like people can't read page one.
If everyone with a dissenting opinion keeps getting banned, it will be a lonely little thread.

There can be some good discussion amongst the sea of shit. Unfortunately, the diet racists decide its a good place to have their views heard.
Oh no, those poor little "dissenting opinions" souls. Will someone think of them?

Is it a discussion if everyone is saying the same?
What good would banning discussion about race do? It's good to make people aware that these issues are still around today. We had one guy in this thread say blackface is okay because it's 2015 and we're past racism. That's pure ignorance. If this thread can educated a few people it's done a good thing.

Time is a flat circle. How many loops is this thread going to go through? It's like people can't read page one.
Pretty sure the only passive aggressive people are the ones saying, "Wow I wish I could say how I really feel but I don't want to get banned"Is it a discussion if everyone is saying the same?
I've never seen so much passive aggressive posters in one thread.
If you think that is what this thread is doing, go for it.
That's essentially what's going on when the majority of the people in the thread who don't immediately say "blackface is wrong 100% of the time, no matter what" get banned.
It's not a discussion if anyone who isn't agreeing gets forced out.
