To his defence: the Black Pete discussion in the Netherlands made a lot of people think about this situation. Most people didn't really ever think of Black Pete as racist. The discussion made them realise it was. Ofcourse a lot of dutch people still don't give a fuck and just want the Petes to be black... but hopefully they will see the light too some day.
He probably thinks different about it now compared to then. Or at least i hope.
Black Pete is now banned in a lot of cities. Petes are now in all colours of the rainbow.
Much more colourful and less people offended = win-win imo.

Edit: I just don't understand why people keep insisting on doing blackface. Even if you don't know that it's racist (which shouldn't be that hard to figure out but whatever), what's the harm in saying "Oh I didn't know that and didn't intend to be racist but now that I understand why people have a problem with it I just won't do it anymore." I can see absolutely no downside. Is it that integral to your life that you'd want to fight over it?

Well yes, I now realize how deeply ingrained it is in America, but we had NO idea in Europe, literally NONE, and our justice system agreed with the majority of people, in that because there was no racist intent, that it was not racism. I understand that no one one NeoGAF agrees with this. My posts might seem strong, but the witch hunt against Europeans that were perceived as racists on this forum was not so tame either, so yeah I overreacted.
My earlier angle was (back in 2014), that this was an uneventful children's party for I don't know how long, but then all of a sudden there were riots, scared kids, protests etc... I was not really aware of the deeper issues, and honestly I don't give a fuck about Black Pete's color.
Wearing a race as a costume is incredibly insensitive. Wearing a race that has a history where people did exactly this in completely racist and hurtful context makes it even worse. Nobody should be taking any time out of their day to defend this.

I agree that for most people it was just a tradition and they were certainly not some evil racist assholes. I never thought much of it either because i grew up with it as a kid. Like most Dutch people. But in my case i started to realise that it could be very offensive and insensitive towards the black dutch people. I think a lot of people realised that.

Yes. Some things should be a given. But just because we think they should doesnt mean they are. Education is truly powerful, even on the internet.
I wish I could find it again, but there is a good book out there written by a black woman who met with KKK members regularly to interview and discuss. By the end of the book one member even turned his robes into her and quit the KKK. I don't think we have a shot at having such a profound impact on GAF, but I also don't think we're dealing with any KKK level racists here either.

It's the one movie that people know of where a black person dresses as a white person in recent times. The same goes for RDJ doing the opposite in Tropic Thunder. You never hear of older movies where this was done here in GAF.
It just shows a complete, and obvious, lack of empathy in people.
It's funny that this "my black friend was okay with it" scenario ACTUALLY happened in this thread.
