Is Tom Cruise's defining feature that he's white? Can't a black dude just wear his famous Risky Business outfit and get the point across without painting his skin?

There are examples in this thread of people dressing up as characters without needing to paint their skin to get the point across.

Of course I did! It's one of my favorite movies, where the moral is it's okay to call people a retard and wear blackface. I also enjoyed Silence of the Lambs, where they taught the important life lesson that it's okay to abduct women and lock them in a pit.

We will never heal the societal wounds of past and present racism, real racism, by avoiding honest discourse, walking on egg-shells, and googling what our opinion should be on things.

There is nothing that is so cut and dry. Saying something is racist, as fact, up to no debate, is pretty gross to me.... It really just impedes progress in my opinion.

We've had multiple members here explain their cases as to why blackface is a big no-no. There's no discussion to be had when people want to put fingers in their ears as a response.

Best part is people are giving concrete evidence on how this is racist but they don't wanna hear it but instead use Dave chappelle as an example...yet clearly that example they use goes above their heads. This is just getting ridiculous.

Oh, I read your post. And many more like it. Being the most convincing character doesn't require painting your skin. In fact, I'd argue it makes the costume look even worse.

Look at the examples posted in this thread, do you have a hard time telling who anyone is because they didn't reflect the race of the character they were portraying?

I wonder what kind of racist ass shit gets said and done at parties where people think blackface is funny. Did his wife go around telling people she had jungle fever? Did somebody in a cop costume pretend to arrest him? All of this is ok though because it's halloween guys lighten up

I absolutely get why it's a big no-no. All I'm saying, is I see the other side too. In an ideal society, it wouldn't be racist and would be seen as light-hearted fun in the same way that cross-dressing, blacks painted as whites is seen.

Some people are just naive, it doesn't, by any stretch of the word, make them racist by default.
