Detroit: Become Human (Quantic Dream) Announced for PS4

"Nowhere to be found" was clearly the wrong thing to say but my point is that we have a game set in a city where the majority is black but you would never know that from the trailer. In arguments made against having very many people of color in games like The Order or Assassin's Creed, we're always told that there are so few non-whites because of demographics at the time (no matter that perceptions of the number of non-whites living in those settings are colored by popular media that whitewashes everything) but the demographics argument always disappears when the inverse occurs.
To be fair, the trailer clearly takes place downtown. It's actually fairly accurate to the demographics. There are far, far, more white people downtown than there are in most of the residential neighborhoods (including my own)

Yey! Finally KARA is alive!
I'm really happy and sad at the same time. The game and the setting looks awesome, but knowing David Cage.... Ugh.
Why they don't look for a nice writer and director for this game? I'm sure they have enough budget to hire a nice writer/director and put David Cage in game design or something like that.
Also, WORST NAME EVER!!!!!!

Wouldn't be too sure about either of those. Corporations would just repackage the message into ways that wouldn't immediately illicit either type of imagery.

You're already seeing that with the sex robots in Japan (this isn't even to mention cultural differences at work).

Truth is slavery is still a thing in parts of today's world, whether it be indentured service or girls sold into sex prostitution rings. As long as it doesn't directly draw comparisons to African slavery in America or plights of women as it is in the Western world, corporations would be able to find some levels of success in marketing dolls just the way it's hinted at in the trailer.

Humanity never truly learns from its history; it just repeats it a little less viciously in cycles with a different dress each time.

yup and you would have plenty of people out there, perhaps even a majority, who would say " you can't enslave a robot. you can't rape a robot. you can't X this or Y that a robot ". Many different movies/shows have tackled that, like Battlestar Galactica and such.

Change the title FFS. Make it simple like Heavy Rain instead of BEYOND: Two Souls.

Fair enough and you make a good point with the sex robots comparison, I just don't think this sort of thing would be advertised on the street, but for the purposes of the trailer and the story maybe it's just to show commentary on the society.

Man, it didn't take long to turn a reveal trailer into a racial debate. I seen all kinds of races in that trailer. Do we really need to pick apart a trailer that takes place hundreds of years from now? Are people really this insecure?

Didn't like few of David Cage games, they look very pretty but weak gameplay and story. Hope this is going to be good. Is this in realtime? It seems to be a CGI using in game assets.

But David Cage is the writer he is. It's not so much that criticism is surprising but the apparent belief from some of the die hard haters that he's somehow going to wake up and write something that is Oscar worthy in their eyes. He isn't going to.

Until Dawn doesn't take itself seriously given that it's a teen slasher, and does it well. Cage tries to write seemingly serious scripts, and isn't great at it, but that doesn't mean we need to shoehorn him into writing a teen slasher horror. He does his thing and will continue to be average at it, and I don't know what else can be expected?

Key word: Does it well.
It doesn't succeed simply because it's a teen slasher.

As for what people expect, people expect an artist to hone their craft and learn from mistakes and criticisms. If not, that, then know what you do well and stick to that and leave the writing to the professionals. The fact that QD has brought on new writers gives hope that this could be a QD game with a good story.

Even something like 'Kara' would have been a better title.

The title makes it seem like Detroit is the character, but it's a Sci-Fi Detroit and I'm sure David Cage won't care about being faithful to the realities of the city.

'To Become Human'
'Knife Sprinter'
'Phantom in the Container'

Something else.

Lmao. David Cage is at it again. Can it possibly get worse than Beyond: Two Souls?

dunno, hard to say since you conveniently don't explain yourself on either end

what about this looks worse then Beyond: Two Souls? What was bad about the B:TS? What is David Cage at again?

Some details would be nice

People are so quick and eager to take offense these days, that they don't even have the time to read the whole article, or watch the trailer in this case.

Maybe the title is David Cage's subtle suggestion to current day Detroit.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

But you were wrong here. At least you tried. 10/10 for the effort.
I wrongly used hyperbole, which people like you will harp on instead of addressing the actual point but I'm not wrong about how people pick and choose when they want games to mimick real life demographics.

We live in the "Politically Correct" era, where everyone can proclaim how offended and triggered they are all the time.

Without exchanging essays, I'd say on the whole it is most likely slightly easier to write a teen slasher script where people expect cheese and cheap scares, than a serious and emotional script where the audience has far higher expectations. No diss to Supermassive at all, but I don't see these two script styles as easy to compare.

As for leaving the writing to the pros, I did expand on my post before you quoted, there isn't many challengers out there doing big budget choose your own adventure titles. Lots of smaller choose your own adventure studios write better scripts than Cage, but most of them work on lower budgets and have less of the visual impact Cage can produce given QD budgets. Would we like Cage to potentially be another writer with QD's backing, sure, but he's not and that's why I find the expectations that he's going to be to sometimes strange.

What some people seem to need is another studio with budgets like this challenging Cage, not a constant desire for him to be far better than he is.

Just call it Kara again. I mean, the tech demo was called Kara, but it's a tech demo. You can't buy it or download it. If you go to a Gamestop or the PS store and type in Kara, you'd immediately find the game upon release.

They really should.

A gender neutral name is preferred it seems though, kind of like with Disney and Rapunzel/Tangled and Snow Queen/Frozen.

So far the release structure has been

Indigo Prophecy; Occult, spiritual and incoherent schlock: Bad

Heavy Rain; Traditional detective/mystery thriller: Good

Beyond Two Souls; Ghostly, action drama and incoherent schlock: Bad

...Please, follow the pattern, Detroid: Become Human, even if you have the same ring to your name as Beyond Two Souls!

I just wanna let people know I absolutely love Heavy Rain and even though QD/David Cage is hokey storytellers I just love the diversity their games give to the AAA industry - a peak of gaming industry that's dominated by fixation on copying the trendsetters to no end.

Haven't watched it yet because I'm on data, but I'm just gonna say this game should probably have some black cast members. Detroit. Heavy rain was already bad enough about this.

"This is our story."

David Cage likes Final Fantasy X, eh?

Samus Aran in Detroit? Or a horrible name for androids living in Detroit?

It's not so much the amount of words but the lack of anything interesting about them. It's title that you use because you can't do a better job of naming the game. They sound stupid and unnecessary.

Yes, it was called Heavy Rain.

Speaking of why did Ethan wake up with Origami figures? Oh yea because of reasons.

That game had massive plots holes.
HyperBitHero has a really good video on that actually. Supernatural elements.

I still think Heavy Rain is Cage's best effort between his last three games despite the awful story and awful French voice acting. Beyond: Two Souls was a disjointed mess that couldn't even be saved by Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe. That says a lot.

First of all, I never implied the trailer looked bad at all. Secondly, I don't need to explain my opinions to you. There are plenty of people online that have critiqued David Cage games.

HECK YEAH. Was hoping QD would make a game from that KARA tech demo. Looks great. The title Become Human sounds better without Detroit in it.

It's pretty sad honestly. My favorite quote from Pi is applicable here, just slightly tuned.

Jmood88, this is for you:
Hold on. You have to slow down. You're losing it. You have to take a breath. Listen to yourself. You're connecting a [reaction] I had with a [reaction] you might have had and some [racist] hogwash. You want to find [racism] in the world, you will be able to find it everywhere. [Racism] from a mere street corner to your front door. [Racism] riding on the elevator. When your mind becomes obsessed with anything, you will filter everything else out and find that thing everywhere.

Being from Detroit I happen to like the title. The Become Human tag can be taken so many ways and all are relative to the city. It is beautiful .... Day 0.
