Halo 5: Guardians |OT| The Trials of Osiris

for the most part the seem as (in)effective as ever, but i must say i was pleasantly surprised when i had a passenger in the hog jump out on their own to take an available ghost. i thought that was pretty awesome at least.

I had Tanaka jump off my Scorpion and grab a gungoose to be promptly destroyed by a Knight with an Incinerator Cannon. I kinda just sat there as Locke yelled out "Tanaka's down! Everyone regroup!" and was like, why.....?

I mean is it really even hard to rank at Onyx? Is intial placement based on individual skill? I lost like 3-4 of my placement rounds and still got Onyx

It depends on several things like the playlist you are Onyx in. In my experience, SWAT is easy to get Onyx in, where as Breakout or Team Arena not so much. Also, your initial ranking from my understanding is based off of your kda in your placement games, not the win/loss ratio.

Sweet finally finished my 10 games and made it to diamond in slayer. So I can't drop down to platinum if I lose now, right?

Correct.

Out of all the new things in the game the ground pound has to be my favorite.

Yeah, some things do. I don't really think the story is hard to follow at that point though. What exactly is confusing you?

The big beats up to that point are:

-Oisris Brings in Halsey because she has information on Promethian Attacks on Colonies.
-On a routine mission with Blue Team, Chief has a vision of Cortana saying "Meridian is next" They go AWOL to find her.
-Osiris is tasked with going to Meridian to bring in Blueteam. Wherein they get roped into defending the colony against one of the aforementioned Promethian Attacks. They eventually track Blue Team to a Forerunner structure where a Warden says that he serves Cortana, they kill the Warden and run into Blue Team, who escape via a Guardian to some unknown planet. Which is where you are now.

I'm confused about the premise.

How much time has passed since Halo 4?
Who's Blue Team?
Why is Cortana not dead even though they made a big deal of her dying in the last game, thus cheapening her supposed death?
Why is Buck a Spartan?
Why are we still fighting the Covenant? (Still didn't understand this in 4)

Basic stuff like that.

Anyone know why the classic "vortex" emblem isn't in Halo 5 Guardians?

You can browse what I think is the full collection of emblems on Waypoint. Just go to your REQ collection and start scrolling.

EDIT: Oh, thought you were asking if it's in. IDK.

About a year.
Other SPARTAN-IIs, Chief's classmates/family.
You'll have to find ouuuuuut.
Because if he was any better, he'd be one, and he got better, so here we are.
The Covenant in 4 and 5 are a splinter group; not all elites realized the Prophets were full of shit, a lot of them only sided with Arby during the Great Schism because of honor and wounded pride at being replaced by the Brutes, and also because getting replaced by the Brutes generally means getting eaten by them. They eventually coalesced around Jul M'Dama into the new Covenant.

Master Chief's friends from the Spartan-II program. They allude to this in their very first appearance (one of them refers to their time in bootcamp), it's more explicitly explained by either Tanaka or Vale during one of the Meridian missions.

She didn't die. When you inserted her into the didact's ship at the end of Halo 4, she was absorbed into the domain, which is basically forerunner internet.

Spartan-IVs are selected from talented soldiers and are mostly just soldiers in power suits. They're not kidnapped as children or experimented on like Spartan-IIs.

I'll give you that this was poorly explained in Halo 4, but the next mission will clairfy. Basically, different splinter groups of The Covenanat exist, some still think they should be attacking humans.

I don't fuck with any EU stuff so this is stuff I just learned from the in-game dialogue.

So I have been thinking about Halo 5 a lot at work, as I have several hours to go over everything I've played and really take into account where the game exceeds and stumbles. I have been pretty negative in a few posts about Halo 5's story because the direction it took really upset me. But ultimately I feel I would be doing the studio a disservice by not talking about the vast majority of the things I do love.

Here's my (mostly) positive input and constructive criticism.

Pros:

Gameplay & Multiplayer

It's the best the series has ever had in it's entire history. This is a HUGE statement to make, but one that I humbly stand by and can do so with complete confidence. For a newer studio to take over such an iconic franchise and make the rest of the series gameplay mechanics look second best and the multiplayer more enjoyable than ever is hard to believe. But it's entirely true, and I think 343 should be very proud that they have managed to pull off such a feat, on their second entry no less.

Weapons

The weapons in this game are the best we have ever had in a single Halo experience. they all work so well, and are diverse enough to make you feel like you constantly want to try something new. It's an outstanding feeling shooting in Halo 5, not many games offer such a diverse and fun gunplay experience.

Prometheans

While I was someone who enjoyed their presence in Halo 4, I was always waiting till the next time I could fight the covenant. They were just a lot more fun. It has been a complete 360 with Halo 5. The addition of the soldiers as well as the changes to already existing Prometheans has made them a blast to fight. There was more the one occasion in the campaign where I said to myself...."When can I fight Prometheans again?" I was actually looking forward to fighting them while being in battle with the covenant.

Level design

I never had a problem with any of Halo 4's levels. I found the entire game very enjoyable, but it was a complaint and 343 has completely fixed all of the issues. Not only are the missions varied and very open but they have added to what Bungie already established with the verticality and multiple pathways. It's outstanding.

Audio

The way everything sounds in this game is top notch. I truthfully believe if it was not for the small details like the sound of getting a kill in multiplayer or boosting from side to side the game would not be nearly as enjoyable. This is the best Halo has ever sounded. Going back to Halo 3 is going to make my ears bleed.

Cons:

Story

This is by far the reason I walked away from Halo 5 disappointed. It kind of blows my mind that the game has improved on pretty much everything in every way and pushed Halo forward more so than it has done in the last 8 years but somehow takes several steps down in the story department. It's all over the place and hard to understand for people who have no followed the material. There are several things I do not understand and I follow the material very closely. Team Osiris was enjoyable and I liked their inclusion, but I think giving them over half of the game was a little to generous. Halo fans want to play as Chief, and if he is going to be in the game give him more than 20% of the screen time....the game was about him after all.

The story that was built up in the Ad campaigns was far more interesting, which helped sales but made the actual story look worse. I also hope they give us a good reason why
Cortana is acting the way she is, hopefully clarifying to us that it's not actually the same Cortana we know and love because if it's indeed her entirely I feel the character has been butchered irreparably.

Revive

Honestly, I would prefer this was not in the game at all. It really doesn't seem to fit Halo's gameplay, and for me it bogs down the enjoyment of playing the campaign. But, if it must be kept my suggestion would have been to make it only usable on teammates, both on and offline. If you are playing by yourself, you should not be revived upon death, make the health appropriate for that, but make death a back to checkpoint system again. It only works when playing with friends, or reviving downed AI.

Soundtrack

This is an odd one. I actually think the soundtrack is a decent step up from Halo 4's, but Halo 4's soundtrack seemed to fit the game perfectly. When I was playing the music chimed in appropriately and worked...it improved my experience. Halo 5's soundtrack sounds like it was first and foremost designed to be an amazing soundtrack on it's own, then applied to the campaign. It makes certain moments in the campaign seem less monumental because what I am hearing doesn't give me the right emotions for what I am actually playing.

Guns down missions

This was a neat idea but it didn't seem to really work. It felt out of place and inflated the count of the missions playable. I think maybe there is something to this idea, but it needs to be reworked.

To sum it up, Halo 5 should be the undisputable best Halo game ever going off of the fact that almost everything is improved from what we have come to expect. But a really lackluster story that doesn't work combined with a few odd design choices keep it away from being an instant classic. I think 343 is headed in a great direction in almost all respects, but a similar situation to bringing in the pro team for Halo 5's multiplayer needs to happen in regards to crafting a story that the fan base wants and will feel good about. That combined with taking a look at a few choices such as revive, and figuring out a way to either strip them or make them work better could put Halo 6 in a much better place. One other thing I'd like to say, is that I have a feeling 343 will change things about multiplayer in Halo 6 just for the sake of change because they want players to feel like they've gotten something new with the next installment. This is what happened with Halo 3 and the addition of equipment. It wasn't needed and it led us down a path to where Halo wasn't as competitive. Keep multiplayer the same as it is now in 5, with only subtle improvements, as well as more map variety.

Ultimately I'm doing my best to come around and accept the story of Halo 5, but either way...the experience and package 343 has crafted is something to write home about. I hope the team feels the community's feedback reflects that and gives 343 a positive outlook on the work they have done.

I am enjoying Warzone quite a bit, but there are improvements 343 could make on their first attempt at it.

*Cards - Frequency of better vehicles needs to increase. I haven't seen a banshee card since launch day. I also have 30 mongoose cards that I will never use, so I end up selling.

*Bosses - Either do two health bars (one for each team) and whoever kills him first gets the points, or do points based on which team did the most damage. Having 6 of your teammates killing a boss only to have one enemy roll up on a mongoose and pop one pistol shot off and steal the kill is a terrible feeling, because there is really no way to stop that.

*More mancannons! - Point.

*More AI - Should have random AI spawn all across the map. Random elites, etc.

Overall I like the gametype a lot, but there are some improvements that could be made. Also we need more maps for it.

From my hours of playing Warzone this works both ways. There will be plenty of times on Raid on Apex 7 where I'll have the opposing team focused on one of the Legendary Bosses on the beach side of the map.

I'll let the Legendary Boss do his damage to opposing team and also let them do there damage to him while I hide in the rocks above hoping I can pop some last few shots while his health is almost all the way down.

Its been fair and unfair but it'll be interesting to see if any changes are made to the Legendary Boss system in Warzone.

well, a gungoose SHOULD be more effective than riding on a tank.

More random AI spawns in warzone would be nice, a few elite elites appearing to ruin the party would be nice to see, even if they are only worth 1 point. In a way titanfall has spoiled what I expect from AI in a multiplayer game as i'm used to seeing tons of AI marines running about among the action.

I'll keep praising the campaign, but not the A.I. of the teammates.

Too many times i am standing on a higher up platform firing at enemies below. My teammates next to me and looking at me like....''Ehhh...so what next?'' and good lord...there are fucking enemies below us firing at us like crazy. This happens waaaay too often and come on, we're in 2015. How did this happen? Now i don't want these guys to have amazing aim and that they kill all the enemies for me and i have nothing to kill left....but damn, let them at least shoot fuckers.

If you Press UP on the D-Pad to give them directions, do they follow it or not?

I found out that they do follow those commands if it involves targeting and enemy, picking up weapons or very slowly moving to the place I want them to go. :D

I will say that 40-45 is Diamond , 40-49 Onyx and the rest 50.

No way. 50 was a joke in Halo 3. Guaranteed a lot of Platinum players got 50.

I'd say, in Halo 2 terms, that Platinum is 31-33, Diamond is 34-36, Onyx is 37-39, and Champion is 40-42.

No one got higher than 42 in Halo 2 due to skill (you just forced host and slaughtered bad modders or counter standby-ed to victory.

The way I see it

0 - 9 | Bronze
10 - 19 | Silver
20 - 29 | Gold
30 - 39 | Platinum
40 - 49 | Diamond
50 | Onyx
Semi Pro/1% | Champion

how many force colonels we got on GAF?
kappa.png
Is anyone or has anyone seen a bronze player? I haven't yet even after looking at the players in my preliminary rounds.

I've had a few matches now where some annoying asshat is spewing garbage the entire match and the mute button isn't muting /facepalm so I get stuck listening to their shit or else I can't hear the rest of the team. Both mute all and mute player are completely unresponsive in the menu.

O_o I can't wait for the next update patch...

Guys, the 1-50 system and the Halo 5 ranking system really aren't comparable. The divisions aren't directly analogous to numbered ranks.

Onyx doesn't have different grades though like the rest from what I know. There's no Onyx II, is there?

Onyx works differently to the tiered system. It shows your actual CSR. It starts at 1500 I believe and works upwards. I'm at 1630, the highest I've seen is 1751 but I'm not sure what the cut off point for Champion 200 is.

I hovered between 36-38 in Halo 2. In the 40s it was a crapshoot of modders and standbying. Halo 2 definitely had the most challenging ranking system though. Very punishing.
