Halo 5: Guardians |OT| The Trials of Osiris

Wow FFA is crazy. Decided to use that as my first foray into Arena. Shit's brutal. Fun, but tough, though some of the randomness caused some grumping. Lots of deaths from being shot on spawn, and many kills robbed after doing 99% of the work. Still a riot overall though. Gotta relearn how to play vanilla deathmatch.

Is there any info yet on what ranks actually represent? Like, what approximate percentage of the playerbase is in each league? I got Onyx 1500 for FFA but I don't really know what that's good for. Doesn't seem to be rank/ladder info in the game, though my tired eyes might've missed it.

Oh, and I finished Halo 4's campaign! I know a lot of people are down on it, but I thought it was pretty neat. And at least the MCC version was very pretty imo. Now I can start H5's campaign over the weekend :D

Onyx is pretty much the highest in the game. Your 1500 will go up or down based on your skill. The top 200 people with the highest points are put in the Champion rank.

So, any tips on getting permanent loadout weapons, or are they just really rare? I've been opening nothing but gold packs and I've gotten like 3 total, and I feel like they were from commendation packs.

Does any one else in the UK or EUW feel that there aren't many dedis over here? I'm always been matched up with Americans and the ping is terrible.

I do get EU servers. But I get dumped in U.S. servers when I shouldn't if 343 had done it correctly. Its beginning to fuck me off already.

Why don't they you patch in a ping limit selector? Where we can start searching at say 50ms minimum upto 125ms max. It would be better than your current system which isn't that good.

A pre-game lobby that allows me to mute people would be nice?

Yeah this is bs, half the time I can't mute IN GAME either, the x button just doesn't seem to mute anything at times... wtb patch sooner than later. I hate having racist crap being spewed and I can't even mute the lobby or people doing it ffs

Titanfall did it just fine what's wrong with these guys?!

Yeah, I looked up that Enter the Arena blog post and saw Onyx was pretty up there. I felt like I really struggled, and I didn't win once (got 2nd once!), but my ego will happily take it. ;)

I hope some actual info on player distribution per league turns up though. Would be fun to have a better idea of things.

Open silver packs >.> I got most of them in bronze and silver

I can second this, both permanent weapons and certifications seem to love popping out of silver packs. I've picked up a bunch in quick succession since I started grabbing those instead of golds. Got two bayonet ARs back to back, then a bunch of certs after that. My last one had the tank! :D

Just had the most amazing Slayer matches, 19-12-9 then 18-6-12 (for me, with my negative KDA lol).

Everything is starting to gel..... the movement within gunfights is simply amazing.

Warzone is such a poorly designed, half finished slugfest.

Terrible map design and a completely passive experience that never finds its groove. Good on paper, but I feel like they put the boring Spartan Ops team from Halo 4 on this mode. If that's the case, it shows.

I have no idea what this means.

Are you hiding in your home base reading a book?

Couldn't have said it better myself. Thing is they won't do fuckall, even when the majority of non NA players have stopped because of their fucking shit "we know best" decisions.

And non NA players left will either have to deal with it or play another game. I don't think that they even care that they could retain players world wide if they actually catered for them. Fucking ridiculous

Just finished campaign. Better than 4 but still pales in comparison to the old games. I like the ending's implications but the journey there was painfully slow and dialogue was extremely spotty. I still know next to nothing about either blue or osiris team. Locke's a pretty boring character and could use some more fleshing out. Palmer is a huge improvement from Halo 4. Would have like to see her play more of a role.

Encounter setup isn't too bad. The environments are pretty big, though forerunner architecture gets really repetitive after a while. (location spoiler)
Sanghelios was gorgeous.
Prometheans are still quite boring to fight though they're definitely improved. Not a fan of covie designs at all and especially the grunt voices. Sound design is probably my favorite in the series aside from maybe Reach.

Overall it was a fun enough romp, but I think 343's capable of more. Pacing and dialogue are two huge weaknesses. I'll definitely be doing a legendary co-op run at some point.

(ending spoilers)
I've been saying for the last 3 years that Cortana was gonna be the villain. Need my royalty checks pls

I thought warzones was going to be a bad game mode that just made me wish for BTB, but I'm actually really enjoying it. Just had an awesome last second come back.

I've gotten matched up against Onyx players in FFA in all three of my placement matches so far... I'm not holding up too well.

The Warzone maps are slightly too large for my taste. It's only 12v12 with limited AI. It's unnecessarily large at times, especially when most people will choose to spawn at captured bases close to the action.

Here's hoping they're following the heat maps of map traversal and player kills and designing whatever comes next accordingly.

How broken is the ranking system?

I struggled my way through the first 10 arena games hoping I would end up in Iron or something and play against like minded broken thumbs....

Platinum? That can't be right can it?

My stats gave gone down a bit since playing my placement games where I had well over a 3.0 kd and I only placed in plat 1, whereas in areana my kd was around 1.0 due to playing my placement games at 5am at launch with 2 hours of sleep, and was placed in diamond 1. Makes 0 sense.

Yeah, the ranking is jacked. For instance did my SWAT ranking matches with the same set of four. My one friend who did the best got Onyx, makes sense. I did second best, got Platinum. Then my friend who did third best got Onyx and my friend who did the worst got Diamond. I had the second best KDA and got the worst placement but my friend that went negative every match got Diamond. Very strange, not a big deal as I can climb through the ranks without a ton of difficulty, but still.

Excuse my extremely noob questions but this is my first halo.

Shoud probably go watch a catch up video on YouTube or something before continuing playing. I have absolutely no idea what is going on lol

Well it's not a video but here's my summary of the plot before 5:

Humanity in the future. A smart lady who is also a total dick (Halsey) creates super soldiers from kidnapped children (Spartans) for military purposes. Same lady is doing personal research on strange alien shit across the galaxy and created an AI to help her (Cortana).
Surprise! There's a group of a few alien races all in a club together (the Covenant) and they seem to want humans dead. Lucky we have all these super soldiers. Well that worked out okay for a while until most of them died, time to start planning the next batch.

Humans lose a huge battle on one of their most populous worlds. One ship in particular gets the fuck out of there.
Well, they thought they went somewhere random, turns out their AI on board (Halsey's Cortana) jumped them to one of those strange alien structures because she wanted to check that shit out. A giant ringworld (Halo).
Surprise again, the Covenant are already here checking it out too. Whoops.

The resident super soldier on board (Master Chief) and his best buddy AI Cortana (in his suit now) go kick some ass and try to figure out what's going on.
They learn that the Halo was created by an ancient extinct race of powerful aliens who basically ruled the galaxy(the Forerunners), and the covenant worship them as gods. The Covenant believe that if they activate the Halo it will trigger their "great journey" to heaven or whatever. Well, theyre sort of half right. The reality is that it was created as a weapon to wipe out all life in the galaxy.

Why? Because there is a creepy ass parasite life form (the Flood) that infects and takes over all life of a certain sufficient mass. It's so dangerous that the Forerunners created Halos as last-resort weapons to wipe the galaxy clean and let it start over from specimens kept in something like Noah's ark. And that actually happened a long time ago, which is why Forerunners dont exist anymore.
So what's the first thing the covenant do on the newly discovered Halo? Fucking accidentally release the Flood, which were kept contained on the structures for research purposes. Shit gets real and Master Chief/Cortana manage to blow the Halo up. Galaxy saved.
So the covenant go off in search of more Forerunner shit to try and trigger the Great Journey (which will actually just kill everyone ever).

Eventually the covenant discover a hidden portal that will teleport them to the giant structure that controls all of the other halos across the galaxy. Yep, there are more of them! The Master Chief/Cortana end up following the covenant there. Again they manage to stop them, but he gets stranded there with no way to get back home. Cortana isn't feeling so hot about this because AIs have a short lifespan before they go crazy and they likely wont be rescued for many years. Many of the members of the Covenant learn the truth and splinter off as allies to Earth (lead by The Arbiter), while others maintain devotion which results in a civil war.

In the time that Chief was in cryosleep hoping for something good to happen, the Covenant managed to find the Forerunner equivalent of a cryotube and actually wake one up (the Didact). A living forerunner, not just one of their leftover AIs. Unfortunately he's not one of the nice forerunners, he's a military commander who holds a grudge against humans for some shit that happened back in his day. He awakens all kinds of foreunner AI robot shit and finds his own personal Death Star in an attempt to reestablish forerunner control of the galaxy. Chief wakes up and gets to work on that problem, later meeting up with the military.

Meanwhile Cortana is sort of losing her mind, shes well past her expiration date. She uses this to her advantage by uploading her crazy broken self into all of the Didact's forerunner shit which really ruined his day and results in his death. This kills the Cortana. Master Chief cries and writes about it in his diary (not really) and goes on with his life. He usually goes lone wolf but since he's feeling lonely, he decides to find some of his old spartan buddies to talk about boys or something.

Then Halo 5.

Just set your Live safety rules to only be able to talk to friends, problem solved.

Lol so instead of them fixing the mute button in game I need to perma mute everyone I come across system wide??

They also need to fuck off with the whole whoever shoots the kiling bullet wins the boss kill in warzone, all it takes is one idiot to screw a whole teams work

I've played almost all 5 games and this is the first time I've actually understood wtf is going on. Thank you!

Jesus Christ. Why did a guy who isn't even placed get put in my team at Onyx level... Hold on while you just go 0 - 12 and quit at the end...

I don't get the ranking/matching system in this game.

Team Slayer:

Orion
Fathom
Regret
Orion
Fathom
Regret
Fathom
Coliseum
Fathom
Orion
Fathom
The Rig
Regret

One Coliseum. One Rig.

Three Orions, three Regrets.

Five Fathoms.

I think we took one break in that string, never a Plaza to be seen.

Could you 343 guys maybe look at the map distribution. And never make me play Orion again ever please?

I played for a bit, and honestly I wasn't really feeling it. The gunplay felt sooooo great, but Halo to me just is so uninspired.

Mission 7 so far (I know I'm only finding a couple hours per day to play) on legendary difficulty. The difficulty is insane with some fights, especially the bosses, but I can see why they wanted each Spartan to be in a team of 4 for reason. At the same time it feels like death/defeat is trivialized because of this.

So far the story is pretty good, but nothing jaw dropping like the older games ie Flood and all that. Overall, loving both multiplayer and campaign.
