Fallout 4 has gone gold; leaked gameplay vids

Bethesda's track record with difficulty levels isn't great. The highest difficulties in their past three games were all sponge hell.

This is how I remember them being, too. I'm not very optimistic.

Fallout 3 and NV were insanely fun with some of the more popular difficulty raising mods, hope 4 gets its own version of wanderer's edition or whatever it was called.

That sounds interesting. I hope you do post it. I admit that my choice of description was exaggerated. I think a lot of it has to do with the poor implementation of PBR, as you indicated. At that point, it comes down to art direction for me. If Witcher 3's vegetation and landscapes do more to mask the techniques used to create it, then that is aesthetic design executed well. So far, what I've seen from FO4 does not inspire much confidence in it's art direction. The animations are beyond hilarious, which might be forgivable if the rest of the world didn't look like a dollhouse for these action-figures to play in. Add in Bethesda's melodramatic voice direction and I just feel totally pushed away by this product .

I kinda dig the art style, personally. It reminds me of the old Fallout CG look (along with pc cg graphics of that time in general). And most of the animations we've seen so far haven't really been that bad. I really think people are exaggerating that element of the game. Third person looks a lot more viable, combat looks a lot more reactive and FPS-like, and NPC interaction animations are generally good and at worse serviceable. As for Witcher 3, it's art design is really executed well. It improves on Witcher 2's look, which was one of the best looking games out there when it dropped, and nailed the open world and your character's sense of place in it. I couldn't get the camera mod to work, but I took a small handful of screenshots with Ultra textures around White Orchard. Witcher 3 benefits greatly from being a third person game with a pretty distant perspective, because not all of its textures are particularly sensational - generally just where it counts. And its cohesive look helps a lot too. The way it looks on consoles in still (digital foundry) shots also isn't too far off from what I've seen from the PNGs of Fallout 4 on PS4, plus Fallout 4's image quality is generally cleaner to boot. I'll link the screenshots I took plus Fallout 4 shots for comparison.

Those five Fallout 4 pics are from the PS4 version of the game, as opposed to PC ultra textures, to boot. I made sure to pick only the shots I could find with a bit of nearby detail. There aren't a lot of shots to pick from at the moment so I'm working with what I've got. As for the PC ultra texture screenshots of Fallout 4, they're here in this thread, so you can judge for yourself.

I really think that people have been exaggerating the look of this game. For what it is I think it's more than serviceable, you know? On PC I'd say it actually looks pretty fuckin' great, and it certainly doesn't look awful on PS4.

How am i supposed to find actual people using that app though lol?

They should've just integrated it into one of the popular ones.

hopefully the ps4 version isnt too shabby since my pc upgrade doesnt come until january.
ill just get the goty edition on it later on.

I think I'm going to have to put an extra point in charisma for the lone wanderer perk. Dogmeat looks so poorly animated and janky that it seems incredibly immersion breaking to have him running around on fire or gliding across the map before glitching off a ledge.

Oh man, I just realized that if the karma system is out, we won't be assaulted at random by a group of dudes from a community/group that dislikes you when exploring. That was a fun element. Sucks there's no weird wasteland equivalent too. Altogether though, I don't really mind the other streamlining done to the game.

Why do you think that? Skyrim managed something similar without a Karma system.

You don't need to have a karma system to get on the bad side of a faction and have them send dudes after you.

It never stopped you as long as you weren't seen :D

I recall losing karma even when stealing from empty houses, but maybe I'm just remembering things wrong

I never actually paid any attention to karma in FO3 anyway, though, so whatever lol

I've never actually had that happen in Skyrim actually, apart from vampires but I thought that was normal. So being vilified by a community is still in then? That makes sense.

Now I'm unsure. I might be misremembering because while I was looting and hoarding shit left and right I never had bad karma, but I also generally went the good guy route in dialogues/missions so that might have offset it? I rarely ever looked at that stat, nor had I noticed any repercussions as a result of it, so I'm not bothered by its absence in any case.

Any word yet on whether the simplified dialogue options means there is less backstory given to you by NPCs, or if its just your own character who has less to say than in older games?

cant watch the videos at work..

ive never played any fallout game but ive seen a 24h session of fallout3 this weekend and now im kinda hooked. Might geht f4. Will f4 also have the VATS system? I liked that alot, also, how similar will it be to f3? is it largely the same in terms of gameplay or are they trying something new?
that said, i dont like that suit..

Don't care about graphics (although I do prefer the overall darker art direction in Fallout 3), all I want from this game is good, well-developed story side quests that you can stumble on. Every Bethesda game since Oblivion, in my opinion, has gotten worse at doing this. Skyrim felt really lacking in this department. No amount of jank and repetitive dungeons can take away the magic of finding that house full of invisible people in Oblivion, or discovering Oasis in Fallout 3 - this is what I play these games for.

The writing and presentation of NPC's is sort of better than I expected. That "finale" left a little bit of an emotional impact in me, haha.

Yeah, I haven't really heard anything that put me off to the writing just yet. I also like how you really can move around and/or fuck around during conversations. So I could just up and punch someone in the face if they say something I don't like and it's seamless.

Christ. Those textures.....

The console versions are really getting shafted.

I don't even understand how you're judging the textures based on that video. That would be like if I were to judge Witcher 3's textures based on this video.

That rubble does kind of stand out though. I want to see what that looks like in a direct feed shot. The digital foundry article and nvidia tweak guide should be hella interesting.

for fucks sake!

40 pages in 24 hours??!!!
it is impossible to keep up!!!

Interesting bit of news that I don't know if it's already been posted.

The EULA on steam lists that all mods must be released for free. Thanks to Pat from SBFP on twitter.

EULAs can be changed, in fact they often are for digital services

Found this today in my twitter, slightly relevant (don't know why, but i lol'd)

The setup makes me realize Fallout 3 is really really old. Still a great game that still has incredible replayability value today. In fact I started a mod free game last weekend at my mothers house. I will play that character until next autumn probably. Just a few hours everytime I visit.

yeah the game's increased verticality combined with its typical hilarious dogmeat pathfinding really make it apparent why companions are invincible

I'm happy they are invincible, too often in Fallout 3 I left Dogmeat at home because I was too worried he would get killed
