Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return (English Version) PSOne Classic Out This Week

This is missing a lot. Intelligent qube, Ape Escape, Tony Hawk 2, Neversoft Spiderman, Pa Rappa, Tenchu, mega man legends 2, etc.

Granstream Saga, Project Overkill, Ghost in the Shell, Tobal No 1, G Darius, Blast Chamber, Azure Dreams etc are all great PS1 games too, but I nipped a lot of cover art off over the years to keep it down to what I really want most. I'd hate to get one of those before I get Heart of Dearkness, for example.

Is the sequel generally considered better or worse than the original?

i beat the second game before even touching the first

i might be biased though, but i didn't get too far in tomba 1. i'm gonna give it another try right now as i jsut redownloaded

I keep wandering into this thread wanting to talk more about Lunar 1+2. I want to play them so badly. I'm playing Arc the Lad and marveling at the translation. I'm so used to terrible, barely functional translations that are little more than elementary text on screen. From this era, I mean.

Games like Tomba coming to PSN means that people and Sony are still working to release games on PSN. As this list of missing games gets shorter and shorter, I get more and more excited that the remaining miracles are going to happen.

Like, Christ, we got Mega Man Legends this year. Now we got Tomba 2.

Please, Lunar 1+2 next. Please, oh please. There's no stopping this train we're on.

Oh it's that game.

I would really appreciate it if you would release this game in English.

Arc the Lad Collection was my first brush with Carpal Tunnel. I thought I was sharing the writing, but then when I had to can Zach like a few weeks in, I ended up having to do the writing for all three back to back. Arc II was the killer. Had mountains of text.

vireland, now that Tomba 2's been resolved, can we see MPG releasing a new set of Japanese PSOne classics on US PSN? If so when's the earliest can we learn about them.

You'll have to ask them. We have some crossover, but only on a few titles. You'll have to tweet or email them and see what else they have coming.

How so?

The first one was a very meaty game. I still need to get both on PSN.

You receive a lot of powers right at the end that are all but useless outside of some arbitrary gates that were clearly meant to be used in other areas earlier in the game. Some boss fights are straight broken, in that you can beat the boss in less than 15 sec without trying. And the final cutscene shows you sailing away from a giant pig island where the final boss fight takes place, only the final boss fight takes place underground in a nonchalant hole in the wall in an underground area near the beginning, not on a pig island.

This is excellent news to see, and on my birthday no less. A big thank you to all those who worked on the re-releases, and I'm very glad now that I bought and supported the Import release when it came out. My faith was well placed.

Then let me tell you, even today, there are people discovering your work for the first time and reveling in its excellence.

I'm playing a lot of PS1 titles for the first time on my Vita, which has been wonderful and scholarly. Arc the Lad immediately stood apart from other only-serviceable translations that populated games of the era.

How many games did I think were poorly written, when really they have just been poorly translated?

Experiencing a game from this era that reads as well as it plays is revelatory. As somebody who places intense personal value on the "full canon" of games, I can tell already that these old games you have translated merit attention as a genre of their own. They are incredible accomplishments. I have been reading all about your classic game translations for days.

All I need now is access to Lunar, so I can fully appreciate what Cosmic Star Heroine is trying to do.

Thanks a lot for all your hard work, Vic. Then and now. I have nothing but praise for you and your teams.

I won't buy this because I already have the game on PS1, but just dropped by this thread to encourage everyone to get this shit. Tomba 2 is one of the GOATS.

But yes you are correct.

Is there some kind of contractual obligation that every SGDQ event has to have something horribly awkward on camera happen?

Yeah pretty much. I'll give you a quick run down of some of the highlights since GDQs started in 2011.

SGDQ 2011 - Ultrajman cries.
AGDQ 2013 also the year of BlueGlass YSG and just a lot happened that was hard to watch
AGDQ 2013 - RunnerGuy told to stop running mid speedrun for a sad story
AGDQ 2013 - Cosmo gets flustered at Mirrored
SGDQ 2013 - Awkward arm moment. (Chat was hype)
SGDQ 2014 - my man Chibi
AGDQ 2015 - Really awkward donation from SamSVG. (You have to Google the drama as to why this is awkward as shit)
SGDQ 2015 - Crash 2 speedrun....

2012 was pretty tame.

There is so much more, like SoTN voice acting, singing, hype shouts, awkward donations, marriage proposal etc.

Can anybody make me a thorough recommendation on Tomba? What's great about it?

I usually pay attention when a game has such loyal fans, but I don't know if I "get it" without having it explained to me. What's so great about Tomba?

It's a bright, colorful game with lots of goofy/charming elements to it that is very rare in today's games. But the actual gameplay I found (at least for the first game, haven't played the sequel yet) to be rather bland - lots of collectathon-ing (I felt like I was playing a euro platformer!) and backtracking, and the hit detection for making challenging jumps/grabbing ledges just felt off to me...

Both it and the Japanese version are on the store now.
So, for anyone that had the Japanese one, is the US one free?

They said it was supposed to "update" but updates aren't a thing for PSOne Classics so I wasn't sure how it was going to work.

Doesn't seem to be the case considering it still charged me for this. Ah well.

I think updating in this case would be pulling the original item and putting a new one in its place. Less a patch and more the digital version of a disc exchange.

I'll give it until tomorrow, but I guess it wouldn't be too bad to have a Japanese version too as a curio. Probably should've just waited though.

I remember that i finished this game in japanese when i was little with the help of my uncle and fuck this game is AMAZING

It was really hard but so worth it

considering PSN isn't fully updated yet and things are trickling in, it's probably best for owners of the previous release to just wait a bit until it's completely done. It's not the first time buying something on PSN has had weird issues during the content update.

PS: vireland, thank you

If anything I hope I'll be able to hang onto the Japanese version because I was not expecting the game to have a completely alternate OST.

Uh dude
Maybe
WAIT
for the store to properly update
as well as for them to make the game free for owners of the JP ver.
Cuz making it free for owners of the JP ver. prob. hasn't gone live yet

I bought this on the Japanese store, American Japanese release, European American release, and now I might have to buy it again (if it doesn't give me a patch) for the American English release. If I purchased this so many times without any regrets (somewhat), then doesn't that show this series should have a revival?

I mean I'm not upset about it or anything. :T

The backend voucher that will make it free for people that bought the JP version on NA PSN is coming. Takes a bit of time, but you'll get a message announcing it.

Also, check out the MPG site for a chance to win a rare Tomba plush:

Exactly right. If you bought the Japanese language version, wait to get the message informing you that you can download it for free. It's coming. Just takes some time.

Different numbers internally, so both should stay on your account. With the English release, the JP language version will disappear from NA PSN soon, so if you want the alternate OST, get it now.

Oh, so it stays and I keep my curio release while getting it in English? Best case scenario! And vindicated for buying once I knew everyone would get it.

Trying out Tomba! 2 again. I believe some of the emulation issues they were having with this game was due to the music acting odd. Every time the music in the Fisherman Village loops, the music from the Coal-Mining Town plays for like a split second then everything plays out normally again. I've encountered this issue before, but the retail disc version plays perfectly fine with no oddities.
