Halo 5: Guardians Smashes Record with Biggest Halo Launch (games/hardware) in History

Some of you seriously have a sad addiction to sale numbers.

If you don't play the game or are interested in it why are you interested if it is on its downfall?

Same shit with reviews.. some really have to grow up

Why do people ask for sales?

It's all 'bout the money. It's all 'bout the dum dum dedede dum.

No, seriously. GTA 5 broke the $1 billion mark in a week, if I remember correctly. $400 million is nothing to be sad about. And the money will probably keep rolling in. It's a great launch.

GTA5 the game broke $1 billion. $400 million includes hardware for this.

Its really obvious how they come with these weird bloated numbers by combining all these different metrics. Sales must be pretty mediocre for them to resort to this level of spin.

Biggest halo* launch ever!

* on xbox one
* during first week
* that launched on a wednesday
* that had a five in the title

Good on them. Launch for me went off without a hitch and it's a great Halo game. I hope they follow through with their sustain plans.

If that's included in the total number that's even more embarrassing

It's like cobbling together every penny just to reach a number you use to easily reach with copies sold of just the game itself

...Actually, considering they're a game feature, I suppose they're included as well.

If we go 1/3 of this is HALO 5 console bundles + 2/3 is Game only

Game: 60 USD, Console: 500 USD

=> we roughly get 2.000.000 HALO 5 copies

---

If we go 1/4 of this is HALO 5 console bundles + 3/4 is Game only

Game: 60 USD, Console: 500 USD

=> we roughly get 2.400.000 HALO 5 copies

---

You can probably go -10% on those because the game costs more in the EU + Deluxe Game editions cost also more

Sounds good, but as per usual with Microsoft PR, I'm not sure what to make of it. What does biggest launch in Halo history actually mean? And best selling first party title, which excludes Titanfall, so presumably it's being compared to games like MCC and Forza? I can't think of any other better selling first party games, and those first party titles didn't exactly set the world on fire sales wise.

And if you included hardware sales to the past titles like they did with this one, it wouldn't be

If that's not the case, MS won't say it break record right?
Since they say it break record I assume they add software and hardware of pass Halo and Halo 5 bring the most dollar.

there's controllers and REQ packs too

GTAV relied on hard copies, not 500$ hardware. And it passed the 1 billion mark in 3 days, not three weeks.

I bought the limited edition console, I think it's ok for me to ask for sales # because I see through the bs

Good enough overall then although from the careful wording and avoiding all reference to actual sales of previous entries I'm guessing those thinking its below H3 and H4 are right.

Would be great to see the regional splits or at least decent estimates when the dust settles.

The PAL chart thread and info shows a definite drop in units in UK for a launch at retail with an unknown but probably decent amount of digital, but US is where XB1 remains strongest and closest to PS4 so I'm assuming that the dip there was lesser.

Revenue wise it looks good for the franchise though no doubt about it. Now let's see the legs and if the MP thrives this time vs H4. I'd imagine 60fps will help there.

MS really do seem to want to avoid anything by revenue, stats and odd records though it seems. I'm guessing it's a while before we're going to see them given straight numbers for specific software sales in units or hardware sales in units.

That would fall under software revenue.

So it's highly likely that's included in this number for padding purposes lol

That is a very weird sentence. Conspiratorially I guess they want people to focus on the 'best-selling digital game ever' and miss the 'for an opening week' part.

I really don't think it's that weird, and I didn't miss that part. The game has literally only been out for a week exactly, so it couldn't be anything else :P

Yeah, I know. Never claimed otherwise.

Doesn't take anything away though. $400 million USD is a huge amount of money in one week. I don't see how people can downplay that. Well, the usual suspects will always find a way, but seriously. It's a great launch. Any company in the world (except Rockstar?) would be thrilled to sell $400 million USD worth of games and hardware related to ONE game.

GTAV relied on hard copies, not 500$ hardware. And it passed the 1 billion mark in 3 days, not three weeks.

I wrote a week, not three weeks. Might've been 3 days then. But GTA 5 was also released to a much, much bigger install base (6-10 times bigger than Halo 5, probably).

I'm tired of MS PR bullshit. How about some actual number this time?

You won't be getting those from MS this gen, unless it's something truly spectacular.

Your best bet is the NPD thread in several days, which will no doubt have the leaked numbers we're looking for.

Nobody is interested in its downfall, is this the first time you're in a sales thread? There's no need to be defensive about this stuff.

Great game breaks records and has successful launch, all people can talk about is PR spins.

There's a lot of additional great news in the report itself, namely this:

This might be because the LE version of the game is packaged with a digital download code, not a disc. It's also the version included with the LE console.

Why are people so suprised and so fixated on how many it sold.

With the highest week one attach rate for a Microsoft first party title on Xbox One, the game was the most played of any game on Xbox One, as well as the most played on Xbox Live.

This is literally the best a halo game can do on the xbox one and any numbers on how much it sold wouldn't tell us much about halo, but would just re-affirm what we know about the xbox one.

Assuming MS sold.. 200k LE consoles (which is a lot) @ $499, that would make 100mil in revenue. If I divide the remaining 300mil by $45 per game (assuming lowest price), that would make 6.7million copies sold.

Assuming $60 per game would make it 300mil/60= 5 million copies.

I know this is too simple, but it's somewhat of an indication.

Seems like a repeat of the WoW no longer reporting on subs debate. In the end how much money the product makes is infinitely more important to the future of said product than # of sales.

you sound really emotionally invested ? and what's wrong with people being tired of the industries (mostly MS) PR bullshit and wanting hard numbers ?

they should have came out and said "halo sold x copies first week" done

Because this PR is obviously full of spins because sales were likely not favorable? If Halo 5 sold better than any of its predecessors, you can be damn sure Microsoft would have mentioned it in the PR.

Kind of misleading to include those hardware numbers too - although I suppose they included game downloads. But controllers? Seems shit.

Game is great fun. I hope 343 gets to expand it as time goes by

Holy shit, that e-sports prize pool! I thought they'd cap it at a certain point and take the rest as profit... They are dead serious this time around.

I imagine competitive players won't be going anywhere for a while...

There is nothing sad about wanting to know about sales. At the end of the day it's still a gaming industry and knowing sales numbers helps get a better understanding of what consumers want and how the market is doing. Just because one is fascinated with numbers and reviews doesn't mean they want a game to fail.

Also another amazing part of this is tgat the prize pool for the Halo World Championships has gone from $1m to $1.5m due to REQ sales and it continues to grow
