Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return (English Version) PSOne Classic Out This Week

Yeah, there's only a hundred plush to give out, and this is a NA launch, so to be expected...

Is it? I'm usually not bothered for my country to be left out of these giveaways, but your game just released in our country, day and date with North America. This isn't a NA launch, at all. You'll need another excuse to forget that other countries are still the very fanbase that have been supporting you this far.

Here's a good one:

Shipping is really expensive.

Don't know which country you're talking about. And if it launched outside NA today as well, I wasn't aware of it as I was just helping MPG out with the NA stuff.

No idea they were launching in South America, too. But yeah, shipping a plush to South America would probably cost $10-$15 alone. But you'll have to ask them.

Hey, I'm not saying it's charity, or that you have to foot the cost just to do something nice. Years ago, Aksys released Fate/Extra and they had these cute and fun magazines that were exclusive to Gamestop. Then, they told people that they had a few extra ones and that if you bought a copy of the game, they'd ship one to you. I contacted Akselziys and he told me that they couldn't take the cost of an international shipping to me. Instead of blocking it altogether, he asked if I was willing to pay for the shipping, and that they'd gladly ship one my way. I thought they were being very considerate, paid for the shipping and got me my magazine. That's how you do something considerate without having to cost you anything extra.

This is a message better sent to Monkeypaw since it's their promotion.

How does the Tomba 1 save reading work? I didn't get any prompts when launching the game.

Towards the end of a game after learning how to change size and in a door in the Water Temple, there will be a character that will ask about loading data from your memory cards.

Then let me tell you, even today, there are people discovering your work for the first time and reveling in its excellence.

I'm playing a lot of PS1 titles for the first time on my Vita, which has been wonderful and scholarly. Arc the Lad immediately stood apart from other only-serviceable translations that populated games of the era.

How many games did I think were poorly written, when really they have just been poorly translated?

Experiencing a game from this era that reads as well as it plays is revelatory. As somebody who places intense personal value on the "full canon" of games, I can tell already that these old games you have translated merit attention as a genre of their own. They are incredible accomplishments. I have been reading all about your classic game translations for days.

All I need now is access to Lunar, so I can fully appreciate what Cosmic Star Heroine is trying to do.

Thanks a lot for all your hard work, Vic. Then and now. I have nothing but praise for you and your teams.

Thanks for the kind words!, now my fan club has a baker's dozen! :)

Seriously, though. Anyone who harps on the localizations I did at WD for having too much humor, 4th wall breaking, and modern references never played Arc the Lad Collection. In fact, many of them probably never played a WD game at all, and hear about it from a friend or online or something then take it up as gospel with no firsthand knowledge. And if all of it was so bad, it's interesting that it was copied by almost everyone in console RPGs since then at some point. Look at the RPG landscape pre-WD, and look at it post-WD. Those localizations influenced a lot of what came after.

WD games were awesome. Especially considering the shitty localizations much bigger companies were pushing out in the 90s.

The original PS1 Ape Escape? I played through that game using a disc on a PS3 so that can't be right. Maybe there were some glitches I didnt notice?

Maybe it's a PAL problem then, the game boots up but doesn't detect any inputs so you can't get past the title screen.

Was so disappointed when it happened, and google told me it's a widespread problem.

Just for a little clarity on the free Tomba 2 English for Japanese version purchasers, it looks like what will happen is you will receive an XMB message in the next couple days saying that you are eligible for the free download, and then about a week or so later you will receive the actual voucher, again through the XMB, to redeem.

Thank you for the update sir, was checking various places for info on that. I've waited this long, I can easily give a bit more time for this.

I think you mean through a pm, otherwise that wouldn't work on a Vita.

Silly question but if I buy the JP Tomba 2 now do I still get the Eng. ver. later for free :P

I think someone here said that the music in JP and Eng. ver. are different.

Don't know, but yes the music and some sound effects are different. The intro is also extended to show the ending of Tomba 1.

There's an event that asks you to find a liar from a group of girls. The mini game is randomized, so it's hard to play without knowing Japanese.

Just repeating what we were told by Sony. Basically, the information will come through your device from the Sony side in a message to you. Publishers don't have access to email and contact information for buyers on the PSN store so Sony has to handle the message that we supply.

Risky, because I don't know what the internal cutoff was for creating the vouchers that will be sent out. Prior to the English release? You're golden. After the English version release? Wouldn't guarantee it.

I don't see the Japanese game there anymore, so it's mostly a moot point. Could be an issue for release date, if they don't just give this to everyone.

So, it looks like there won't be a "prerelease" message about the impending voucher for a free download of the English version. There will only be the message through the user's PSN account telling them a voucher is ready for them to redeem that should go out in 7-10 days.

Thank you for the updates, much appreciated..

I fucking loved Tomba and Tomba 2. It was one of the first times I remember playing a 2D game since jumping to 3D and thinking "Wow, 2D games can be great."

Ah good. I was getting worried when I couldn't find a pre release message. Hopefully the vouchers will be ready soon.

Has anybody gotten their free English version yet? I have not, and it's been more than 7-10 days so I'm getting a little worried.

No, still haven't received mine, but it looks like someone from MonkeyPaw is looking into it, according to a couple of thier tweets.

Any updates on the vouchers? I might just end up buying the game now. Looks like Sony forgot about us.

Fyi, I had to talk to Sony Support for a different issue (I didn't get the FF7 discount), and I asked about the Tomba 2 voucher. They had no idea what I was talking about, even after linking to the MonkeyPaws announcement. They offered a refund on the Japanese version, but I declined it since I want to keep that version. I'll wait to hear more from MonkeyPaw, but I fear that it may not come.

Just got word today that the vouchers for those that bought the MonkeyPaw Japanese language PSN release of Tomba 2 will be getting their vouchers to get the English one for free starting tonight, Dec 15th. If you're eligible, check your XMB for a message about the free download.

Hadn't forgotten about you guys, we just weren't getting any answers to our weekly prodding of Sony until today. Apparently it turned out to be a little more complicated on their end than expected to do this. Props to them for sticking with it and getting it done in the end, though!

Awesome news, thanks for the update, I completely understand. I'll be sure to keep a look out for the voucher, and post if I get it. Was close to buying the English version a few times, glad I didn't.

Does this actually have to be through a PS3 specifically? Was hoping to see it on my Vita.

Not sure but possibly. I checked my vita for it last night and nada. Checked my ps3 today and the message with the voucher was there. Was sent last night, same time I checked my Vita for it.

Got PS3 set up, connected... And service is currently undergoing maintenance.

And so it goes.

EDIT: Fixed by deleting the store, restarting, and redownloading the store. Why did Sony feel the need to switch to this again? It's like the dumber version of iOS updates that slow down older phones, it's not as if Sony's really doing a unified experience for PS3 and PS4.
