Halo 5: Guardians |OT| The Trials of Osiris

Does 343 realize that on the default control scheme, if you turn off auto-stablize, they're is no way to stabilize with the sniper without zooming in as well? Like why.

I don't care (for now) that they're forge maps, if there's one thing i'm looking forward to its BTB. Give this mobile, more able spartan some space to breathe. war zone don't count ;P

Fuck yeah headlong--but uh, reach version looks better.....

Not only are they forged maps they are inspired by bad maps (Valhalla Longbow) Headlong is the only decent map of the bunch, though hopefully these spirtual successors will be better. Longbow had awful sight lines, Valhalla had the opposite problem where there was too much cross mapping. Standoff was just kind of mediocre, something similar could work in Halo 5.

My reaction to the lack of new art asset maps is ... they had budget/art staffing issues. Which seems impossible with 343i, right?

Think about how painful it would be to design and artify these maps. Just designing them would be a nightmare as they would constantly have to get full games for every medium sized iteration to check for balance and receive feedback. I'm not surprised but what I would love to see is when the levels settle they put a strike team to do the art for them. BTW 343, I'll do that job.

Just finished the campaign. Probably one of the worst in the series for me.

There were bright spots, mainly when the gameplay resembled 'Halo' with vehicles and multiple large targets for destruction. The rest, particularly with Spartan Locke, were just survival waves and respawning targets. The AI ally characters were so bland I almost wanted to turn all the chatter off. Also, Locke is no Chief, and the whole time I was praying the next mission switched back to Master Chief.

Some of the environments were beautiful but a lot of points just didn't have that discovery or wonder without a narrator or better context.

I couldn't disagree with more. This is easily the best a Halo campaign has ever been. Level design has never been better, the gameplay and options available to the player in combat has never been more diverse and fun. The weapons have never felt better. The enemy AI is the best of the series as far as I'm concerned. The story was pretty damn amazing and the characters were handled quite well all around. Halo 6 is going to be something else, that much is obvious from this game.

Good update. BTB next week, and the maps look like they'll play really well. Didn't really notice the Mark V in the helmet shapes of upcoming REQ'S though...

That clip at the bottom, that's probably why they allow for people to steal boss kills. Guy waited like 2 minutes with a spartan laser to take down Warden at the end.

It's wierd, It seems people either absolutely love the campaign or absolutely hate it.

I don't think I've seen anyone say "it was pretty good, middle of the pack in terms of halo games"

It's either the best or the worst campaign ever depending on who you ask

What do you mean? Is this different from how it is otherwise? You can only stabilize with any weapon you're scoped.

Eh, I'm more middle ground. I think the level design was much better than Halo 4 but that the story was really poor, along with enemy encounters. I don't know how anyone can say this AI has been the best ever. Completely pales in comparison to Reach. Teammates also have some of the worst AI I've ever seen in the series.

Surely there'll be original BTB maps eventually, right?

...right?

According to Frankie.

And BTB is a consequence of schedule rather than a sacrifice to Warzone. If you could see how intricate and interdependent a AAA game production schedule is, you'd see that you can't just move one thing for another. And BTB is its own beast , with dedicated maps, rather than subsets or expansions of existing ones.

This clearly reads as having dedicated maps for BTB.

+ A two for one tank kill.

That's what I've noticed... Maybe thats why it's so divisive... It does a ton of great things, the sandboxs has never been bigger, fuller, or had this much to do and the gameplay has never felt better yet at the same time the friendly AI Is embarrassingly shitty, the frequent boss battles are downright frustrating and the story (which I haven't finished yet) obviously is disappointing to a great deal of people.

I think he probably means it's not like Reach where they just threw campaign levels like Spire and Boneyard into multi-player and BTB and said have at it.

I mean the Forge team essentially created each map just for BTB only. So it is a dedicated map? Or maybe I'm wrong. I just assumed based off the Sprints and pretty much everything I've read that BTB would pretty much be Forge only.

Really don't like the plastic look of those Forge pieces. The valhalla and standoff maps look nice though. See some interesting scenery objects on the Headlong.

The forge "spaces" were developed to be BTB spaces that could do double duty as blank Forge palettes. You can kinda see it just by looking out at them from the Arena forge variants but my quote was actually talking about why warzone maps couldn't just double as BTB maps as is.

I think it will click properly when you play them this month.

Heh, for me it's exactly in the middle. Better than Reach, 2 and 4, but worse than CE, 3 and ODST. 343 is on the right track IMO, but they really should bring back those big vehicle battles for Halo 6.
And please no more Boss Fights, they just don't work in Halo.

I am not an expert or developer but Is it so hard to copy the best of previous Halo BTB maps to halo 5?

The new mechanics and movement would prevent this from happening. Maps would need to be redesigned with Halo 5 gameplay in mind (like Truth).

Edit: But BTB coming in 10 days sounds really nice, even if the maps are Forged. Being inspirations from previous BTB maps, they should at least be decent.

Direct porting the assets, the 3d models and textures, is very simple. However, adapting the playspace to the updated sandbox and ambient sfx/vfx is anything but.

I'd imagine.

With sprint, clamber, boost and more they would all be instantly broken- hence inspired by- they all need tweaks for those aspects alone.

Some of the best maps wouldn't work in the Halo 5 sandbox. Valhalla and Blood Gulch are such examples where the cross mapping fire ruins all map flow. Ragnarok was bad for this reason, that and the Mantis putting a nail in map movement. Though a couple maps with their sight lines and movement would still work such as Waterworks and Sidewinder. Headlong should work fairly well too, but that forge map is quite ugly.

Does that mean there won't be any purpose built BTB maps? Everything will be off a forge canvas?

That's dumb.

Eww Forge BTB maps.

Eww.

they look like UE3 maps they forgot to load in
