Is it uncommon for people to speak languages other than English in the US? Here in the UK you hear other languages all the time and no one cares.

There are places in the west where basically everyone speaks Spanish and there are ethnic neighborhoods dotting American cities where the mother language is the norm. This woman is crazier than most. I'd say most right-winger dicks will explode on Facebook periodically about people not speaking American, and won't actually confront them randomly in public.

The part of these stories that really gets to me is when the victim talks about moving because they don't feel safe any more. Right or wrong about that, it really pisses me off for the attacker to basically "win" by impressing upon the victim that they don't belong there.

As someone who moved from the North to the South and then back North again, I'm not sure which I prefer.

Up north you're much more likely to hear racism in polite company and have people stab you in the back. Down south you're much more likely to have someone spit in your direction and call you a slur.

You know what a southerner's beliefs are much quicker and the backstabbing is less out-of-left-field.

These people (especially in a barely populated tundra like Minnesota) form their perspective on the outside world based on TV, in this case Fox News. The people angriest about Muslims and Mexicans in this country are the least likely to encounter them. Some hick with no real awareness of the outside world hears a strange language and feels uncomfortable or confused. Some hick who watches Fox News hears a strange language and immediately thinks about the foreign hordes trying to invade and destroy Jesus and our way of life and the liberals helping and protecting them because they secretly hate America too.
