I'm trying to get my head around what you're saying, and I can kinda see what you are on about, the main sticking point is that you want to make a char with a back story that isn't supported by the game?.

I mean, it's a criticism, but it's quite a niche one, the game needs a narrative arc, it's just that this one doesn't fit in with your expectations.

And why is that?

It's not like there's any game that will let you make your own completely immersive backstory that's actually referenced in-game.

In New Vegas, yes, there is not any huge reference to your character's past. They don't mention your character's family, any loved ones, anything that really happened to you. I am, as a roleplayer, free to imagine that my character was and did anything that I wanted. Literally the only thing i'm tied to, is the fact that at some point, they became a courier, which is pretty much the perfect job for roleplaying, because there is a near endless amount of reason why someone might become a courier.

In Fallout 4, the game says THIS was your life, THIS is your spouse, and THIS is your son. Be sad about this, because this is what your character is and what your character cares about. On top of that, THIS is your character's voice, and just try and guess what you think your character might say from a couple of words and we will tell you EXACTLY what your character actually said.

I'm not telling the game to reference any immersive backstory I want. I would just like it to do what New Vegas did, and not reference it at all, so that it can literally be whatever I want it to be, and I can be immersed in that role. Like a previous poster said, I can't roleplay as someone who was always in the wasteland, who is gay/lesbian, and has never been in an monogamous relationship and has no children, because the game is telling me that that isn't who my character is.

No clue. I just mash random buttons in the dialogue sequences so have no idea how charisma influences it.

It's not like the previous games where it would show in [ ] brackets what your checks are. Charisma, Perception, Intelligence, etc. Now it's Green means it works, Orange and Red. So those are hard and/or impossible? But what check are they against? Only Charisma anymore? It's all stupidly vague.

I can't tell sometimes about the dialog, is this an angry response or an "I don't know you well enough" response. At least DA2's shit dialog wheel had faces so we could guess the bullshit.

I have two questions to those who are playing on PS4. (I asked before but the game wasn't unlocked back then).

Can you start playing after downloading 4 gigs like in Bloodborne or does it get stuck like after the intro like most games? I am much curious because my connection is like 256ish most days. (no seriously, it is 3mbs or whatever it is called)

What is the gunplay like? Which game can you compare it to?

Ok, I get it, but man, you could have done without that spoiler, or at least said you were posting a huge, end game spoiling spoiler.

Urgh. I know you spoilered that last bit. But really wish there was a bit more warning for such a big spoiler.

Edit: I totally understand why that would be frustrating if the game is forcing you into a role that you have no connection to and cannot immerse yourself in. In the end they are trying to tell a story though (good or bad) and it is really hard to take into account the diversity of your player base. I am not saying they shouldn't try to though.

Yeah really.... Fuck.

I apologize. I should have specified it was a very big spoiler, instead of just leaving it behind a spoiler tag.

I saw an option being yellow one time but i had no freaking clue what picking that would do compared to the other options. It's so stupidly vague. It's even worse than what Bioware uses and that says a lot. But i'm loving everything else about it. But i have given up on playing it like i played Fallout 3 and instead play it like i play Bioshock: I.

You just ruined the ending for me. Thank you.

You should mark your spoilers a bit better next time, so someone casually scrolling through the thread doesn't come across one small line of extreme spoiler territory.

Have a great day.

Edit: Seems like you've already been called out for it.

Seriously, can anybody help? It's a dealmaker/dealbreaker for me.

In his defence, if you're a person who is worried about spoilers for a certain game, and you enter a forum thread anywhere for said game, you should be vigilant of spoilers. He spoiler-tagged that bit. You shouldn't have read it. I saw the black bars and certainly wasn't going to click. I don't even own the game yet. He's also added a big spoiler note in front of the bars, now.

care about my son, because he's the final boss.

Great. Thanks.

Anyway that's just personal opinion. I don't really care for making my own story. It's not me in the game, I'm playing that character and go where ever the story goes. Clearly you want something different from the game. That's fine.

We've been over this before, people. Try and refrain from posting any end-game spoilers, even under spoiler tags. Right now only a minority of people have actually beaten the game and know about the ending, you're just going to spoil people by talking about it here, accidentally or otherwise.

If you want to discuss ending details, head over to the spoiler thread.

Did I force you to look behind a spoiler tag? I apologize for not specifying that it spoiling more than just the beginning of the game, but it's not like I made you read it.

It was still a douche move. I didn't think it was going to be that severe of a spoiler either. You don't mark a spoiler of that magnitude without a little more notice.

Yes, my accident, and you looking behind the spoiler tag was a douche move on my part.

In any case, I apologize, to you and anyone else that got spoiled and did not want to be.

Seriously, can anybody help? It's a dealmaker/dealbreaker for me.

I only got to play about an hour, so this isn't nearly everything, but I found the gunplay to be fine. Certainly improved over FO3. I don't play very many shooters but it felt maybe closer to Bioshock:Infinite than anything.

You didn't force me to do anything. Others have already clarified why you were in the wrong, no need for me to continue.

Just learn from it and enjoy the game.

Just planning my build before I dive into this after work.

I'm thinking of going for the following:

Strength 1
Perception 4
Endurance 6
Charisma 6
Intelligence 5
Agility 1
Luck 5

I'm not big on melee builds hence the lack of strength.
Perception at 4 for the locksmith perk.
Endurance at 6 for rad resistance and aqua boy.
Charisma at 6 because... well it's an RPG.
Intelligence at 5 for hacker and scrapper.
Agility at 1 as I don't really play stalth or use VATs a lot.
Luck at 5 because TBH I just wanna see what it does.

Anyone who's played the game a while see any big problems with this build? Any advice would be appreciated.

How hard is it to understand that story SPOILERS go in the SPOILER thread.

He is not a douche for looking because we don't expect huge spoilers like that in this thread.

Too late now, but it is was it is, I assumed, as we were talking about beginning stuff that was what you were posting, not a huge end game spoiler.

But what's done is done :-(

Out of curiosity, would you argue that any 'role playing game' should always feature a player-made character?

The way I see it, there are those who believe one isn't 'role playing' unless one has created the role; and those who believe you can role play with any character, even a pre-made one. I personally believe you 'role play' whenever you play a game - so even if your character has a deep back story, you still 'role play' them and take control. EG The Witcher 3 - the best RPG I've ever played (personally, not saying it IS the best) and the character is already well established for over 100 lore-years.

If you're gonna have a spoiler with regards to the very ending of a game that released not even 12 hours ago for most people here. It's pretty normal to mark so very clearly, so that people don't read the spoiler without knowing that it's the biggest spoiler of the entire game

Yeah, I love Witcher 3.

But I liked what New Vegas did, and was hoping this game would follow suit. It's just what I wanted from this particular series and this world.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback.

Anyone got any strong opinions on the gun combat?

Yeah, that's fair. New Vegas did it great. I prefer the character creation of FO3 immensely on paper, but New Vegas was so well executed.

You kinda just shouldn't post that big of a spoiler in the none spoiler thread. Most people casually read this thread and don't worry, I wouldn't even mark it properly, I just wouldn't post it here. Not everyone reads everything you write, people skim through, click here, click there. Bam ruined game for someone.

Simply spiders like that just do not belong in this thread. Simple forum etiquette.

How feasible is it to replace all the sound cues with Yello's "Oh Yeah"? As in, I approach a settlement, "BOM BOM, CHIK-CHICKACHICKA" hits. I have plans to ignore the narrative and this is essential to the plan.

I'm sorry, I had been seeing a lot of people post spoilers in this thread behind spoiler tags, so I assumed that was okay. Now I know, I won't do it again. My mistake.

Most of those spoilers relate to early-game stuff, not the ending. I'd advise you to look up the spoiler thread if you want to discuss that, I've linked it in the OP.

Anyone else get one of these? Wasn't in the game case, didn't see any one else with it at the store and haven't seen it online. The clerk working there handed it to me.

the pre-determind backstory would have been better if the protagonist wasnt voiced

hilarious when he/she sounds like a concerned parent when inquiring about shaun but then follows with 'i cant remember the names of all the people i killed'

real quality writing there

Cool. Thanks for the feedback.

Anyone got any strong opinions on the gun combat?

its better than fo3/nv but still not quite on the level of a dedicated fps

How is the melee combat in this game compared to the previous games, or more specifically the unarmed bit? Still wonky with bad animations, or have they improved it? Do you unlock new moves or nicer animations as upgrade it?

Played this last night (PS4). I really enjoyed what I played. I didn't notice frame rate drops until I got to a very combat heavy mission. It was indoors but it felt like slowdown instead of the choppy framerate from past Fallout games on consoles. I didn't mind it but I hope it isn't like past games where it gets worse as you play more.

The game looks beautiful, especially at dawn. The gunplay controls remind me of Wolfenstein, obviously not as polished but still good enough to have me playing it as a shooter with rare instances of VATS. I'm playing a stealth character.

I loved New Vegas and the ambient music gives me that New Vegas vibe. I never play these games with the radio on because i really like the ambient soundtrack. Great atmosphere so far.

Can't wait to play more.

What difficulty setting would you guys recomend, I played Fallout 1 and 2 way back when, never touched 3 or New Vegas. I normally play game on hardest or second hardest but I'm not sure how hard it is in this game

Anyone picked up the physical guide yet? I'm about to pull the trigger on a Best Buy order, but still not sure it's worth it. I'm usually a sucker for physical guides when it comes to big RPGs.

Mine's being delivered today. But jfyi Amazon has the collector's guide for $24. Almost half off compared to other places.

What goes through peoples heads when they go into an OT the day of release and post end game spoilers.. Regardless of whether or not its behind spoiler tags. There's a reason a spoiler thread exists. Spoiler tagged stuff in the OT should be minor stuff that some folks may not want to know about like a small quest tidbit or the name of a character or something. I haven't clicked on any but I feel sorry for those who have after waiting years for the game. Use some common sense people.
