2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

I don't bother with clean installs, as far as bloatware.

I find that it's faster to just delete anything I don't want through the Control Panel -> Uninstall method.
I second this statement. Much easier to uninstall bloatware then to wipe & start from scratch.
Also some bloatware is actually useful, e.g. Lenovo's Energy Manager (battery percentage in taskbar, right-click access to four power profiles, among other useful things), though this varies by vendor.

Only things I instantly delete are McAffee and Norton trials. OEM specific programs I will let stay, while I figure out if they're useful.

All else equal, a system with an i7-5700HQ + 970m beats one with i7-6700HQ + 960m anyday of the week, right?
Yup, the CPUs are quite similar in performance (the only real big difference is the support for up to 64GB of RAM in the 6700 vs 32GB of RAM in the 5700), but the 970M is in another class entirely when compared to the 960M, it's a pretty big performance difference.

Is that Dell laptop the best bang for the buck laptop available now? (gaming performance wise)
Yes it is.

Educate me on that. What do you mean?
He's referring to the various shady software that Lenovo preinstalled on some of their laptops that were discovered this year. Notably, Superfish (intercepts HTTPS traffic, affected the 2014 Y50) and Lenovo Service Engine (data collection software that survives clean installs, affected the 2015 Y40).
The idea being that, if some shady software was discovered, there might be more shady software still undiscovered on users' Lenovo laptops.

Oh wow, I totally missed the news on these revelations. That's so messed up.

Is the only choice for the Y40, to replace the storage drive? Man I need to look into this.

edit: it was hidden in the BIOS? whoa

Nah, Lenovo released updated BIOSes that disabled LSE after security researchers found a vulnerability in it.
Software that survives clean installs is actually a Microsoft-supported feature called the Windows Platform Binary Table. I'd blame MS for implementing the feature in the first place imo.

Would Thunderbolt3 be more futureproof with eGPU or a Alienware with their eGPU solution would performe at the same level?
Thanks!

Seeing how Alienware will most likely drop the Amplifier for a TB3 port, yeah.

I got the ASUS and will let you guys know how it is.

Family just got it up and running and apparently it has the "no sound" issue with Windows 10. Bleh. I've seen that when upgrading another laptop but really disappointing to see it in an off the shelf W10 laptop. Hopefully the driver update/uninstall fix works. Edit: It did. Searched for updated driver, installed, restarted, now there is sound.

By the end of the month I should be checking out the MSI GT72S Dominator Pro G-220. If I'm lucky I might get some deal because of black friday or cyber monday, or something. I want to do a clean install once I get my laptop. I'm guessing I'll get all the disc drivers, if not I'll just download them before formating.

My only question is about W10, since it works differently, I want to format it the traditional way, not using the windows tool to do a fresh start. Will I have issues with my license if I do this?

I mean they don't use keys for the license anymore...
My plan is to use the media creation tool to have Windows 10 in a usb. Format it, and install W10 from USB, then install all the drivers.

Any issue with my license if I do it that way?

Are there any good deals on 970m laptops currently? Thanks in advanced.

No deals, per se, but the Sager NP8657 and 8677 are the cheapest route.

I got the ASUS and will let you guys know how it is.

That's why I haven't jumped to 10 yet, it still feels like it's in Beta.

1. Why clean install an MSI? Just uninstall the Norton trials, and you're good.

2. It will come with a disc which holds every necessary driver.

2. The license is saved on the machine for clean installs. Just download an ISO and proceed normally.

Hey guys, I'm in a little pickle here.

So I bought a SAGER NP8670 last summer thanks to your help, but I think I'm just noticing an issue. I tried running Resident Evil 4 HD on it and it's running at like, 20 fps. I don't quite understand why and I don't see why it should. I posted the specs of the Laptop below:

- Processor: 4th Generation Intel® Haswell Core™ i7-4720HQ (2.6GHz - 3.6GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache)
- Graphics Video Card: NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 965M (2.0GB) GDDR5 PCI-Express DX12 (Maxwell) w/ Optimus™ Technology
- Ram: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz [1x8GB] Dual Channel Memory (SKU - RAM02S)
- Primary Hard Drive: 1TB 7200RPM [SATA II - 3GB/s] (SKU - HDDYY1)
- Operating System: ~Windows 7 Professional Premium 64-Bit (64&32-Bit CD Included) + MS Office 2013 Trial
- Display: 17.3" FHD 16:9 "Matte Type" Anti-Glare Ultra Bright Screen (1920x1080)

I feel like these are more than enough to run it. Also when I tried running L4D2 a while ago it was chugging and I had to play it in a window.

Is there a setting or something I'm missing to unlock this thing? I downloaded the latest drivers and that didn't do anything. I honestly have no idea what to do.

I just went into the NVIDIA control panel, into the global settings, and then set the preferred graphics processor as High-performance NVIDIA processor. Is that all I need to do? Should I restart my computer? Because after doing that nothing changed either.

EDIT: Ended up plugging my computer in and updating my drivers that I didn't know I could update through the Device Manager. Got RE4 to run at max settings 60fps. Glad things are working as they should now!

I would ask for advise and guidance. I want to buy myself a laptop for christmas, it's main purpose will be university stuff such as CAD modeling, electrical simulators and electronic design software. But I want to be able to play games too, I would really like to play Dark Souls on it (if that is even possible) since my PC can't handle it. Games on medium-high will be a good performance.

Country: Spain.
Maximum 1000-1300€
Max size: on the 15" screen size, I've seen they are around 2.6kg if it can be less it will be better.
Planned usage: Like i said CAD modeling, electronic design purposes and playing middle demanding games.

Think that is all, anything else you need you call it.

Thank you in advance.

Purchasing from Amazon (US), I have 400$ on Gift Card

Maximum budget: 1499$

15 Inches only.

Planned usage: Working on Adobe CC Suite (Working HEAVILY on Photoshop, Illustrator, Lots of 1080p Premiere and After Effects (Using gpu dependent plugins, like Red Giant Suite)

Whatever else you find relevant: MUST HAVE an excellent display, Im dying to get my hands into a High DPI Display, but can live with 1080p provided its great.

At the moment I was Thinking of getting maybe this: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-VN7-591G-729V-15-6-Inch-Gaming/dp/B00WJSQS02/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1446928313&sr=8-3&keywords=acer+nitro+v15+black+edition

Or a Used MacBook Pro 15" (The one with Iris Pro Graphics).

Im looking for a MBPr because of great hardware quality of apple (great keyboard, trackpad and awesome display). Sadly, I know im getting waaay less bang for the buck and since I DO work heavily on Premiere Pro and After Effects, Im afraid Iris Pro Graphics wont be enough.

Also, Im coming from a desktop I built back in '11 so I want a somewhat similar performance (first gen i7 860@3.4GHz, Nvidia GTX570 1.2Gb, 8Gb Ram and 128Gb SSD)

I was also thinking of the Asus Zenbook Pro 4k, but there are really bad reviews on Amazon tho :(

IMPORTANT: Im selling my desktop pc plus using some really hard earned money to buy this, as this will be my main machine and im buying a laptop cuz im migrating and need something able to keep up with the kind of work I do.

Just letting you guys know how important this decision is for me.

You should definitely be able to get a quality laptop with a good display for $1500.
Any restrictions on laptop weight or battery life? 15 inch laptops are typically 5-6 pounds, and a few might be 7.

The Lenovo Y50 is a safe bet, it hovers around 1000€ in places like MediaMarkt or ElCorteIngles (couldn't find it on the web, but I got it for a friend for 950€ back in May).
If you are willing to stretch your budget by 50€, I'd get this (the 965M is far better than the 960M).
If you are willing to stretch your budget by 100€ AND go for a larger and heavier 17'', I'd get this (the 970M is *far* better than both, and rarely in this price range).

I would like to get a Quadro GPU for college, but I don't know whether I will need it as an ELectrical engineering student; I will never bring my laptop to the campus though (I have a crappy one for that stuff).

Am really going to need that much processing power for ECE simulations? The only demanding CAD application that I came across was testing thermodynamics of a chip/board using one of CAD's tools. I used CodeWarrior for assembly but it is not demanding at all.

I already have a capable desktop PC that I can only use during weekends and holidays, so I don't want to miss an opportunity to have a decent gaming laptop to deal with some less-demanding games in my backlog.

Anyways, I am interested in a 999$ Msi laptop that has a gtx 960M. Either that or I will look for a Quadro-based laptop. I just hope that I won't get distracted if I bought the gaming laptop.

Edit: Lenovo W550s (1300$) or Msi GE 72 (1300$ for the 970M variant).

Where are you looking to order it? Just as a warning, some of MSI's resellers seem to be having stock problems (possible production shortfall?) so you might be delayed in getting it. I know I'm a couple of weeks behind schedule for delivery at this point.

Has anyone here with a Y50 installed Windows 10, and how did it go? I'm not doing it now but I'll be forced to upgrade in the future for DX12. I really don't like the forced updates and privacy issues.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but here goes. My buddy is looking to spend around $700-900 range for a laptop that could run Fallout 4 and MGSV. Anyone got any recommendations? He's bugging me like crazy today because he just realized FO comes Tuesday haha he could probably go up to 1k is my guess.

Upgrade went fine, only major problem is search indexing for the start menu is bugged and doesn't work as well as it should. But yeah fixed updates and privacy issues kinda have to be put up with.

Nope, the Gaming Laptop Thread is totally the wrong place to ask about a gaming laptop :p

Amazon or Newegg. I'm planning on buying around the last days of November, first days of December.

I hope it doesn't get delayed, I'm going to ship it to a friend's house in San Diego and I'm going to my hometown on December 11, if I don't get it before then I will have to wait till January to get it. No way I'm going to travel over 800 miles when I'm just 70 miles away from San Diego currently.

And if it's dead on arrival it will be too late to refund... I guess I'll have to tell my friend to check if everything is okay if I have to wait until January to pick it up.

How are dell laptops, specifically the inspiron lineup? I have been thinking of getting the new xps 15 (i5 6300hq + 960m + 8gb + 256gb ssd + 4k screen) but realized I could get what looks to me is a better spec'ed machine with the new inspiron 7000 (i7 6700hq + 960m + 16gb + 1tb hdd and 128gb ssd) and even save a couple hundred dollars in the process. Also, do they have decent battery life or does the 4k panel hurt it a lot?

While I know I won't be gaming on 4k, I thought it would be a nice option to have on a laptop.

With all the recent research I've done on the XPS 15 (Which I lust for but cant afford) You'll get apple retina rivaling displays (same/better quality, which is A LOT) plus a really modern/compact form factor.

The thing about 4k on a laptop screen is you get awesome pixel density but tradeoff battery duration and compatibility issues with apps that have not been updated to work with PPI Scaling.

If I had the money I would surely go the XPS 15 route just to enjoy that display, but if the display is not a killer feature for you then buy the inspiron and save some dough.

They actually have Amazon listings.

If you don't see the exact spec you want, contact them and they'll configure one exactly as you'd like then making a listing for it. I've dealt with Xotic that way in the past.

WOW! thanks for that, also, I was planning on getting a 3k or 4k laptop as I would love a high pixel density display, and was kind of keen to that acer Nitro V15 4k because it got pretty nice results on notebookcheck display list.

I was asking here because all I see on the internet are sponsored or big websites reviews and I dont trust too much on those

To be honest, I'm not even sure why or what I would use the high res panel for but I always thought it would be a nice to have. I'm heading to Frys at the moment to check out the laptops they have. Their site is where I found inspiron

Save for their bottom of the barrel stuff, Dell's quality is fine, and from my experience they have pretty good support too.
Regarding your choices, unless you want the 4K, a
sexy
slim machine and USB-C/TB3, I'd get the Inspiron 7559.

From what I've seen thus far (not enough people have it to make a correct assessment), the 4K does look like it puts a notorious toll on the battery life. Do mind that it's probably the best display around bar none though (it's an IGZO with 100% AdobeRGB)

Mostly for her translation work. I'd like to get something with higher resolution than 1366x768.

Our one year old decided that today would be the day to dump a glass of water on my wife's Asus K42F from 2010. I'm shopping around for a replacement. Checked the usual suspects, but figured I'd get some good GAF advice before settling on anything final.

Just doesn't make sense on a 15", it'll be more of a nuisance than anything.

There is this.

Or if you need more RAMZ.

Or THIS is you want gaming capability.

I had a brief chat with someone from MSI today, and it turns out the 220 (GTX-980M) version is fine, it's just the GT72S with the desktop 980 that's having delays, so you should be okay to order it whenever.

Yeah the 980 is pushed to late November, from what I've heard.

Hey, I need some help here. I'm looking into the Asus gaming laptops and there are so many. I know they just came out with some new models, but my head is spinning trying to tell the subtle differences.

I'm looking to spend no more than $1,200. I'm not sure if it's worth jumping on one of the newer models or not. If someone could point me in the right direction, that'd be awesome.

(I posted this in the Mac Hardware thread, but have any of you had any experience selling mac hardware to Mac Me An Offer or I Got Offer? I'm looking to sell my iMac [late 2012 27''] and I don't want to really go through the trouble of craigslist or ebay. I Got Offer is giving me an estimate of $1,000. Google search says this site is legit. Just wondering if anyone else has worked with this site before. Thanks!)

By the way, Im really interested in the sager with the FHD IPS display, the only thing that bugs me is the lack of an ssd, can I install one later?

Im torn between that and the nitro v15, the acer has an ssd with a disgusting 5400rpm drive and the sager has only a 7200rpm drive. im willing to trade the high dpi screen for more performance provided I can add the ssd, because if not premiere will surely LAG a lot.

The 970M is great. At stock it's about the speed of the GTX 960, but overclocked it can be much faster.

The GS40 is really interesting.
Sorry to bump this old reply but I have a 970m, can you overclock this 3D card? I thought it was impossible on a laptop?
