Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Once you guys lock things down and Bethesda/Modders get the game stable


Ill be really excited to see the final results... and try to replicate them

I had everything set to Ultra except God Rays(set to low), and was getting solid, stutter free 60FPS.

Until I strolled up to Lexington. Once I got near the power plant I was getting MAJOR dips, cutting my framerate in half. I climbed to the top of the power plant and it was almost worse, so I saved my game up there to test out different settings.

While up top, the only setting that didn't cause drops was everything set to Low. From there, I tried Medium and tweaked a few sliders and it seemed to hold steady at 60FPS at this point.

My question is: is this isolated? I seem to run the game just fine outside of that area, but that area was unplayable due to the drops.

Is borderless window mode worth a try to see if it helps? And could someone remind me what the most taxing settings are that I can try toning down while leaving others at Ultra?

To everyone claiming solid 60FPS: seriously, go to Lexington and get near the power plant. It's a damn mess, and I was getting solid 60 before I came to this damn place.

Lowering down god rays to medium and Shadow Distance to medium too helped me get NEAR to a steady 60 fps in the Lexington/factory region. The rest is on Ultra.

What are your specs, though? I'd like to compare.

I already had my God Rays set to Low, btw.
 
It's so crazy to me to see people legitimately angry that God Rays is so demanding on any PC.

Just turn it off. Modern tech costs frames. If the visual effect isn't worth the frames it costs, dump it, then come back in 3 years and enjoy it at max.

They're not slighting you by including settings that your PC can't run well.

Looks like it cannot be turned off, only set to low.

And low will look horrendous when it comes into contact with other objects' edges.
 
Just reporting in as of last night that stuttering decreased a lot by going borderless window. I only get minor stuttering when the framerate goes below 60. Indoors feels a lot smoother too which is great.

You can turn it off, but you have to click the "low" graphics preset and then dial everything else back up to where you want it. Fucking stupid. And even then, you won't be able to lock down the slider fades where you want them. Sometimes it seems this game is willfully against me wanting to optimize it.

I can't wait to get home to try borderless window. So far I've just been playing in standard full screen mode.

I don't have the game yet so I don't know if it can be disabled in the default launcher but,

Godrays Quality Tweaks

Using the in-game console, accessible via tilde, the ~ key left of "1" on most English-language keyboards, you can adjust the parameters of the setting to increase or decrease image quality and performance.

On Nvidia cards, saves ~6 fps.
 
My setup:
i5-3570k @ 4
16gb RAM
980ti slightly oc'd
SSD install
3440 x 1440
I am running smoothly (3rd person view bug is gone) at 60fps with borderless window. I did set borderless in the ini according to the guides.
God Rays are on Low, Shadow distance is in High and vsync is on in the ini. That said I only got as far as Concord.

Admittedly I haven't had time to mess with game much (damn work) but it really sounds stupid of Bethesda to make things so annoying just to adjust a damn setting.

Oh well.
 
Running it at 2560x1440 down sampled with everything on Ultra including God rays at 60 fps. I have 32 gbs of Ram, 980Ti, i7-4790K with stock speeds. It's pretty fucking cool. No issues yet. I'm adjusting the FOV to best suit my needs.
 
Just know that any advice that tells you to adjust iFPSclamp is always wrong.
Someone added the advice to put it at 61 on pcgamingwiki.

Just don't.

Anyone else having Yao Gui just freeze? I mean they would have slaughtered me but it's weird to just shoot them while they stand there.
 
Performance has been all over the place for my gtx770, so I dropped everything to high (except for god rays - low) and I'm still hardly hitting 30 fps when I'm outdoors. Feels bad man.

Gonna try the console command to turn God rays completely off tho, and going borderless window mode when I get home, too.

Same problem. My FPS dropped to 20-30 from 80+ish outside that building. Drops to 40 outside Cambridge police station, too. Looks like it's going to be a recurring problem in cities

Windowed Borderless with sweetfx mod or whatever.

Everything on Ultra, God Rays on High. I'll get some dips in the upper 40s in some small random as fuck interiors and rooms, and outside where there's lots of trees.

I don't think I've experienced drops to the 30s and less like others have mentioned in cities. I'll probably have to look again.

I think it wasn't as consistent when I set that interval to 0 in the .ini.

I have an FX8320E and an R9270 so pretty similar and 30fps isn't a problem at 1080p on Ultra with God Rays and Shadow Distance turned down to medium, normally mid forties actually.

This game is a dream come true in terms of chasing the best experience in all actuality. Took less than 30 minutes of trial and error to get a buttery smooth 1080p60 experience at virtually max details. That beats the shit out of having to play the game at 20-30FPS with dips to 0 (!) while looking at N64-PS3 textures peppered throughout my vision. :)
 
Went to the car factory last night and my framerate tanked. It was in the 30's most of the time outside. Pretty much 60 everywhere else. It was horrible.
 
Would be happy with the performance if I could get rid of the microstuttering

Borderless window feature looked borked on a 4k monitor when I checked it out yesterday
 
I actually put everything on Ultra this morning and noticed I'm still getting 30-40-50 fps depending on the location. That's good enough for me!

My 750ti overclocked is a true beast! :)
 
I managed to get 1440p @ 60fps with my 7950. Godrays on Low, shadows on medium and I think everything else maxed. Turned down some draw distance stuff. I'll tweak more as I believe I can manage some higher settings. So amazed how much I can throw at this card and it just keeps taking it. I'm going to retire her next year and get the new node shrink, but wow.

Was getting a hitch or stutter at 60fps in fullscreen which was seriously annoying. Went borderless window like some suggested and it's smooth as it should be. All ultra/maxxed out except shadow and godrays on high and it's been very smooth at 1080/60. This game isn't a looker that's for sure.

Does it really break things even if you set it to 60 to fix stuttering? I assume so but it would be such an easy fix for stuttering issues..

Capping with RivaTuner on top of vsync got rid of it for me. Worked with both the game's vsync and forced vsync via nVidia Control Panel.
 
Been running nvidia's vsync 1080p 60fps no 60fps cap needed for me and I'm sailing. Feels good to play a beth game that is just working finally!

980 +i5 4690 here.


Oh and godrays on medium. Everything else ultra'd! Full screen trick in the .ini!

This game runs pretty great on my 780 Ti. I'm able to go above the recommended specs in some areas without any problems at all and at 1440p. Only problem I have run into so far is the start menu when I first start the game but it goes away afterwards and I don't have problems with any other menus.

You could sink more time in to Bethesda Jank Elimination Quest than cookie clicker and probably have less to show for it in the end. I like a lot of what they do, but the gamebryo engine really needs to be taken out back already.


For my personal experience with the game I have a 980 +i5 4690 (seems like a popular combo) and have almost everything on ultra, godrays on medium being the exception and it plays great at 1080 on my tv. No hitching stuttering, or glitches. Unless we are talking about the animations.

Setting it to 0 to supposedly disable the in-game vsync helped me with most of the stutters by forcing vsync using the Nvidia control panel.

Couldn't see any changes in physics behavior as well.

not very well, you have to go into the options menu to enable/disable controller.

when you turn controller on, m/kb stop responding

when controller is turned off, m/kb respond, controller doesn't
 
For those saying they're getting 60FPS solid @(insert any resolution here), just wait until you hit
the areas surrounding Diamond City
. Holy shit, stutter/performance drop city.

I don't see anything really wrong with how the game looks or performs, myself. The game looks really nice, it doesn't have to look comparable to Witcher 3 imo to be a nice looking game. There's some really cool village building mechanics and tons of quests to do as well. The engine handles all of it very well. For 60 dollars it's a fantastic value.

Everything set to Ultra except God Rays on Low and Shadow Distance on High. I've only finished the very first part where you meet the Minutemen in Concord, but it was locked at 60 the whole time
 
So I just got to
Lexington
and encountered my first noticeable frame drop inside a building. It was a pretty major dip to the low 20s, possibly high teens, and it only occurred when I was looking a a particular corner of the room. Really odd, but not that irksome since it was limited to a very specific area.

I've performed zero optimization - is there a guide for AMD GPUs, or can I follow the nVidia guide and achieve similar improvements?

Any ideas for what I should change to help with performance in larger towns? I have everything on ultra besides god rays (completely off) and motion blur (which I just dislike).

I can get a good 60fps though I have my settings to my liking and I don't know if it'll work for everyone.
Resolution: 1600x900 (the difference to 1080 to me is pretty much non existent so it's worth the frame rate boost)
Antialiasing: TAA ( dropping to 900p lets me up the AA and it looks great)
Anisotropic FIltering: 16 Samples
Texture Quality: Medium
Shadow Quality: Medium
Shadow Distance: Medium
Decal Quantity: Medium
Lighting Quality: High
Godrays Quality: High (though I suspect if you have an AMD card you'd set this to low)
Depth of Field: Bokeh (Best quality)
Ambient Occlusion: SSAO (High)
Screen Space Reflections: On
Wetness: On
Rain Occlusion: On
Motion Blur: Off
Len Flare: On

I haven't been everywhere yet though so I suspect my 60fps might not hold up everywhere. I'm still tweaking the settings here and there to see how far I can push it while maintaining 60. Just upped Lighting and Godrays to High but they were fine on medium.
