Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Navigate to your Fallout 4 folder (C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout4), then perform the following steps:

  1. Rename Fallout4Launcher to something else (like Launcher)
  2. Rename Fallout4 to Fallout4Launcher
Steam should now launch Fallout 4 itself, thinking it's the launcher. :-)

Thanks a lot. 😁

I'm getting an issue after playing for a bit where Windows says it needs to close fallout 4 to prevent a loss of information. I'm thinking that means something like 'all your RAM is used up'. But I have 8GB of RAM and it wasn't at max when I got the error. Any ideas?

Well, i tried everything i could to fix my fps in the city. Turning shadow distance from high to medium doubled my framerate, now getting 45-60fps in the city at all times.

I'd do this, but I'm afraid of it screwing with Steam updates.

Did you try what I posted pages back?

Try using iFPSClamp=60
This is a good workaround, but (in emulator parlance) I think it's basically the difference between auto-frameskip (which is stuttery) and "draw every frame" (which causes the gameplay to slowdown, but things remain pretty smooth).

It's definitely preferable; the frameskipping is fucked up. But it does feel weird with this on, like you're walking and jumping around on the lunar surface. Still, I'd say it's a lot better -- you aren't missing any information this way and Fallout isn't necessarily about twitchy white hot shooter action anyway.

Has there been any word on official SLI support? I've tried the "Alternate Frame Rendering 2" and NVidia Inspector "Use Fallout 3/NV's SLI bits" hacks -- and they actually make the frame rate worse. With 3 GPUs!

Also, does anyone have a screen tear fix that doesn't involve vsync, because that's the big frame killer for me at the moment.

Can confirm! I did that yesterday. I was getting 60fps everywhere then when I got to Lexington it tanked to 45fps. I went through every option separately and shadow distance was the culprit. Switched that and godrays to medium, everything else on ultra, and I'm getting a solid 60fps all the time.

What type of hardware do you have? I have a gtx 770 and I'm thinking of buying the game for this weekend. I'm wondering what settings I should use.

Got to Lexington and the framerate was fine. Once I actually made it up to the Corvega plant, it was hovering around 40fps but feels like 20. Big disappointment.

Wut? A resolution bump of around 50% does nothing on performance in other games?

It isn't a 50% increase in resolution and in other games it's around a 5-10 fps hit.

How do you get a framerate hit by lowering your resolution? That makes no sense. What is your set-up?

You read it wrong, but I have a 970 gtx and 4690k 4.6ghz. I'm losing 40+ fps instead of around 10 when using 3440x1440 over 2560x1440.

I have an r9 280x 8gb ram and fx8350 @ 4.1ghz. I can turn everything to max, except shadow distance ( has to be at medium, high kills the framerate ) And god rays on Low ( which still looks amazing )
Your performance should be similar if not better if youre using intel. But its also going to depend on whether you have the 4gb or the 2gb 770.

I got 2 questions. How can I lock the game at 30fps? And what are the most demanding settings I can turn down.

I dont know how to lock at 30fps. But the two most demanding settings are shadow distance, and god rays. Turn god rays to low, as it barely looks any different than ultra and performs a thousand times better.

And with my r9 280x the game in the city would hit around 20fps with shadow distance to high, i set it to medium and now i have 45-60fps everywhere.

Does anyone know how to force Godrays off? I've changed the setting to "0" in the .ini file, but they are still in the game (the Launcher says they are on Low)!

Use the low preset run the game then turn the settings up manually. If you set any of the other presets it will turn itself back on

I've barely played so far, but limiting to 75fps in Nvidia Inspector (why does this not have any values between 75 and 120?) has made my game smoother than when I left it uncapped (at least in the first room after waking). So far so good, really.

Open the console in-game and type 'GR off' without quotation marks. You can also enter just 'GR' and it will list all the available God Ray commands, you can then adjust quality on the fly etc.

I have G-Sync on.

If the issue doesn't crop up until you break 100fps, that would explain it. I'm not hitting that at all even indoors (1440p on a single 970, not surprising), so perhaps that's why I haven't encountered problems.

I will say that I haven't noticed any speed increases in game logic and animations when going above 60, though. Perhaps those only crop up if you go beyond 100? Maybe I just missed it and those ghouls aren't supposed to be quite that quick. :P

I Think the speedbug only presents itself if you fiddle with the iFPSClamp setting in the ini files. If you don't fiddle with it and get 100+fps, the engine will "autofix" the speed (some people have reported stuttering when the engine re-adjusts). though you'll get stuck at terminals instead :)

Where do you set the framelimit?

Depending on your card, Nvidia cards use Riva Tuner, AMD cards have frame limiter built in to the Catalyst Control Center (under the performance heading->Frame rate)

Fuck that. 120Hz-mode looks like crap :/

Just set a frame rate limit instead. works great and can help with judder and stuttering.

Thanks! That did the trick.

Edit: Also, the AA options in this game are terrible. FXAA is barely noticeable and leaves jaggies everywhere. TXAA makes everything a blurry mess when you're moving. Has anyone figured out a better alternative?

Update 9.30h in: Diamond City.

Still getting a rock solid 60fps, no dips or any other issues at all, so I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Not sure what is going on with some peoples setup that has better spec than me, but are getting huge frame rate dips in cities etc. Anyway, thought you guys might want to know.

OLD POST

Performance Report 8 hours in.

Everything Ultra except for God Rays on high. 1080P

Win10
Latest Geforce drivers.
6700k no oc
Vanilla Msi GTX980 no oc
16 GB RAM
SSD

Solid 60fps regardless (no tearing, stuttering, dips etc) so far, border less windowed or full screen.

I wonder if you almost need an SSD to get rid of stutter etc. Maybe someone who doesn't have an SSD can chime in. I also wonder if some people with overclocked CPUs/GPUs might have more problems cause of the engine is poorly optimized and more error prone. (Speculating here)

Steam should now launch Fallout 4 itself, thinking it's the launcher. :-)

I'm not certain but if you do this, you may need to add Fallout4Launcher.exe to the Fallout 4 profile in your drivers.

I believe most of them work off the executable name.

I had some of the worst judder I've experienced when I first started the game. Whenever I'd move the camera or move the player and the camera at the same time I got some horrendous judder, even though I was running at a locked 60fps.

Weirdly, by changing the frame rate lock to 61fps on RTSS and not using FRAPS randomly made this issue go away. It's now buttery smooth!

So far, so good. Apart from strange glitches, such as my character suddenly having "black face" and "melted face", my 2 670's are running it quite well. All high to ultra settings and maintaining 60fps. That said, I expect issues down the line, as I'm only an hour or so into the game and have read that certain areas decimate the frame rate. So, something to look forward to down the line, I guess.

Quite like the Pipboy app as well. It's nicely done.

I only get dips on the very dense areas when I'm initially entering it. It feels like a loading dip though because it goes to 40-50 and goes back up to 60 right away. The frameclamp command so far has no drawbacks for me.

so, what's the best way to lose the micro stuttering?
780ti here

I have the same card and I did the iFPSClamp=60 in the fallout4.ini file and no more stutter. But I had to turn shadow distance to medium and god rays to medium and object distance fade to high. Everything else is at ultra. Getting 60 fps most of the time but when it dips with that setting you get some slowdown just so you know.

Also you have to manually enter that line in the .ini under general tab should be the first one.

Yeah It works great for me thanks for posting that! I had some slowdown with it when I was on top of a skyscraper my fps dipped to 35 when I would look off one side of the building. But that's it thanks again!

Bethesda jacked up Tessellation to excessive levels, similar to CDPR and Hairworks. Why?

That post makes no sense. Nvidia paid Bethesda to put in an option that you can turn off and configure with the console to make AMD look bad?

I can promise you that one out of three things will happen.

1) Bethesda backs out and makes it possible to disable Nvidia tech completely, and keep tesselation at reasonable levels

2) AMD puts out drivers doing better or on par with Nvidia regarding tesselation.

3) modders does what's said in number 1. This WILL happen, if 1 or 2 doesn't, i almost guarantee it.

1) You can already with the launcher option and command options
2) Maybe
3) See 1

I own Nvidia and AMD systems and have no loyalty to either. Nvidia definitely do some murky stuff at times but this reddit post is nonsense that's only going to cause more fanboy bullshit. Can we stop with this please? When did the pc community turn into a massive clusterfuck?

Anyone getting a weird flashing on foliage which seems to create stutter? Tried FXAA and turning down everything to low (on a 970) didn't seem to change anything. May post a video later.

Huh just an update on my end since i reached lexington now

And as people say, weird drops for some reason

Have been playing a steady 72fps since the start all max with grays on low

I'm on a gsync monitor and using a 980ti

no hitches and slow downs until i came to lexington .. Feels weird though dropping to 52 to 60 then if you look at different directions even impacta the framerate and varies on that area
