Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

980ti/4790K/16GB 1866 RAM/SSD

Getting excellent performance at 1080p60 with everything on ultra except god rays. I've only noticed drops to around 55fps at Swan Lake. Corvega and Diamond City stay locked to 60. Borderless Fullscreen cleared up the frame pacing issues also.

I am having some serious issues with GPU utilization using my new GTX 1080. I get 35fps in some directions (not areas) and the GPU usage drops to 30-50%. When I exit Diamond city, the framerate just tanks; note that this didn't happen with my gtx 780.

I have an OC'd 1080 and an i7 4770k running at 4.4GHz; I have two 8GB ram sticks running at 1866MHz. I tried EVERYTHING I read online; attempting the same solution that caused the issue before on my 780 didn't work this time. My only option right now is to suck it up and have shadowboost adjust the framerate really fast, but I doubt that shadows are the problem, as I reduced the shadow distance and still got the same framerate.

What is Bizzare is that the game runs nearly the same and sometimes better at 4k rather than 1080p, as utilization of the GPU increases. The weirdest thing though is standing still at a bad spot during the night, and then when sunset starts I go from 50fps to 100fps with increased utilization.

Sounds like you are CPU limited.

I have a similar setup, except for the i7 4770k and GTX 1080. I get 25-30fps in some spots near Corvega, and constant drops to 45-50fps in Diamiond city when entering.

The 1000 series cards are having DPC latency issues (like every damn new Nvidia GPU) and people are waiting for a fix. I will see if the driver fixes the issue--hopefully so. I don't even want to imagine uninstalling all the mods and doing a fresh install of the game. I messed around with console/survival settings and installed shit ton of mods. I don't want to even think of doing all that and having the same problem. My biggest fear is that the issue is related to precisioX or some overlay program, but I remember running the game without anything on and I uninstalled Precision X AKA the Bethesda-quality GPU monitoring software.

Notice the 30% CPU usage and 38% GPU usage. This did not occur with the same PC but with the 780.

EDIT: only the first CPU core is being utilized heavily. Sometimes ALL of the cores are not utilized beyond 40% and I get like 30fps. Note that this is with shadows on medium, which never produced such low fps before "upgrading" my GPU. I tried the multi-threading commands and setting the CPU to high priority but nothing happened; just weird performance. I am fairly certain that I didn't get such huuuuuuuge FPS dips to 20fps even with shadows on ultra with my 780.

What settings are you playing at? Also, any mods installed?

I was having really nasty drops until I lowered shadows to medium distance and high quality, and disabled a texture mod that used a .esp plugin. Now I'm running around at 4k with everything else maxed, except debris is off, and I only see drops to 55 in certain parts of Boston or during intense storms (weather mod installed to make them 'more better' -- plus a ton of other mods).

i5-3570k @ 4.6k
gtx980ti sli @ 1350mhz
16gb ddr3 @ 2300mhz
ssd
win10 64

Both cards are usually at 80-100% utilization and CPU sits at about 40-60%. Haven't looked at individual cores, tho.

I just got the game and it's update installed on Steam. I am on the start screen and seems like loading is taking forever, I can't get to start it.

I even verified the files through steam.

I'm running a 4790k, 16gb RAM, and 1070 FTW. I did install the game on a reg HDD since my SSD is full.

Any suggestions.

Is the creation engine just a poorly optimised engine or something, just turning around in a circle I can see the frame rate fluctuate when there's nothing going on.

Shit. I thought I reported back in this thread.

Well, I had HD reworked mod; the same one you mentioned that had an esp plug in that you should disable. I don't know why the heck did that mod cause such severe performance issues (it probably added assets or caused some of them to load at ridiculous distances). I uninstalled it and got rid of the performance issue.

Performance isn't amazing, again. The game is seriously CPU+RAM dependent. I overclocked my 1886MHz RAM to 2133MHz, and my i7 4770k is running at 4.5GHz. I am using shadow boost with 14000 shadow distance with 70fps target framerate. When I set shadows to 20000 i.e ultra shadows, I get 55-60fps in Corvega plant (huge improvement), and the lowest I got in Swan's lake was 48fps (it averages 55-70fps there on ULTRA).

I wish I went with a Skylake+DDR4 RAM setup back when I replaced that motherboard.

The shadow distance really bogs things down in certain areas, and sometimes its when looking at certain angles. There's some areas near the entrance to Goodneighor where I can look in one spot and drop the framerate into the 30's, but shift my aim a tiny bit in another direction and have a locked 60. The only fix is to drop the shadow distance.

Is it ok to turn off Vsync in this game? I'm using a 144hz Gsync monitor and the framerate seems to just be stuck at 72 fps. I found a guide on how to turn it off but it I'm not sure if it affects the game engine in a negative way or anything. Also, I just bought this last night so any performance tips would be appreciated

Always turn off Vsync if you're using a Gsync monitor.

Decided to start this up today, my last time playing was from August last year. I have this installed on my SSD, but I noticed loading taking a very long time, like a minute. This was something new, previously it would only take a quarter of the time.

Tried moving it back to my regular hdd, but it was just as long or possibly longer, so in the end I just uninstalled it.

Just doing a google search shows I'm not alone. Perhaps it was the latest patch?

Been playing since the HD texture back came out. Some observations about performance:

-Runs better than it did at launch. High refresh rates seem mostly fine.
-Asset streaming stutters are still there, but in reasonable amounts.
-Loading times are still very high, and interestingly enough, there's relatively little HDD/SSD or CPU activity during them. It's like the game is waiting for something to happen while loading, but none of the components are working at anywhere near 100% capacity.
-The HD textures made the game a whole lot prettier at 1440p.
-Godrays are what you want to turn down if you want to gain lots of FPS with minimal loss in IQ. Difference between low and ultra Godrays is minimal in my eyes, while it's a 30% fps difference in some scenarios.

edit: 6700k @ 4.5, DDR4/2666 16 gigs, GTX1080OC, Gsync, Win10, game on SSD

I just tried out the 50GG HD texture pack. re-installed on different HDD (not SSD like before) because the game is 85GB.
So @4K Ultra (including godrays) I can hit 50fps (my preferred frame rate on my TV) but usually drops to sub 45fps. This is about the same as before the HD texture pack was added. @1440p and Ultra (including godrays) I get 50fps 99% of the time. Interestingly my gpu (GTX 1080) only ever hits 55%, maybe 65% occasionally) and my cpu cores (i74790k oc'd to 4.2ghz) never go over 35%).
Only real difference is frame timing is very up and down. Usually sub 20ms but often over, sometimes 25ms. Never like it without the HD textures. So not quite as smooth. But the game does look considerably better I think. Still has the same bugs and issues. Loading is particularly slower (partly because of HDD not SDD) with one load taking nearly 2 minutes.

The HD Texture pack doesn't seem to be working for me in Far Harbor. Is it because of my load order of my .esp's? I was wondering what the correct order should be?

I have no idea what's going on with this game.

I just got a GTX 1080 Asus Strix, paired with my 4690k @4.2ghz and 16GB ram and my performance is HORRIBLE.

I'm getting drops and stutters everywhere, down to around 34fps from 60.

I have most settings on medium now running at 1080p and I'm dropping my settings further and further. This is much worse performance than my 970. I believe my settings are now actually lower than what I had on my 970.

I also disabled all my mods, including the HD rework texture pack, set "prefer maximum settings" in control panel and disabled vysnc in the .ini and enabled it in control panel.

Any help?

Hmm, did you uninstall and reinstall the drivers when you upgraded your card, or did you just install over the existing ones?

There's something very wrong there. I also got a 1080 and the performance is very solid even at 1440p, and I didn't even use DDU. But I haven't ran the game for some weeks. Could it be an issue of the new driver?

Is it specifically in the city or everywhere? If it's only in the city then that's just the outdated engine not able to cope with the amount of draw calls made to render the city.

I'm not sure. I have the new beta driver to fix some issues with Prey. I'm still playing that so I can't really roll back.

I'm getting this issue in the first small town where you first get the power armour, not the big city. After a reboot it went back to a solid 60, then when I restarted the game again I got drops again to 30fps.

So how the heck do you unlock the frame rate in this game? It's capped to 60 no matter what. I've done the iPresentInterval=0 thing but it's not working.

EDIT: nevermind got it working
