so, guys, can I ignore the building of settlements completly or will that somehow kill the game for me in some aspect? I really dont want to do this.

Just got to Diamond City and tbh I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with everything there is to do! lol

Building settlements, exploring, questing, and so forth. It's great though!

Only level 11. It's tricky picking perks and what not as well, but it's good there is no level cap so you don't feel too much pressure to build perfectly.

I played 4 hours last night. I had meant to play 2 hours but I just couldn't stop. I am now at work. I am not thinking about work. I am thinking about how much steel I would get from scrapping all the items in my office and where I can get more circuit boards from.

You'll miss out on mad profits from setting up your own merchant empire. But yeah, it's not necessary if you aren't into that sort of thing - just do the introductory settlement quests so you get some XP, at least.

You should build up one town at least. You can get a lot of parts that help towards weapon/armor crafting just by cleaning up a settlement area and storing junk.

Well, my pretty house is done for now. Completely out of cloth, oil and fiberglass, so I'll need to start looking for those. :p

My power armor collection is also coming along nicely, just need to be able to build a few more rigs.

Got a message that the defense of a settlement failed, sucks that they're on a timer but it makes sense. Fuck it, I can't be everywhere at once.

Apart from the super mutant suiciders, I love this fucking game.

I spent 3 hours in the character creator last night trying to make Clint Eastwood. I'm not even out of the first Vault yet. I should be working but all I can think about is finalising his name. The choices are tricky and I am tired.

Anyone else found the secret elevator at
Slocum Joe's basement
? It's not functioning.. I wonder how do you make it work

They trusted you, man! You just left them to die!

I think the named NPCs are all essential, at least - my first attack was super mutants on the Abernathy farm, and the family there just went into a downed state instead of dying when the muties started their molotov spam.

Cat and cow didn't make it though, but at least their meat was delicious.

@M.D: Yeah found it, guessing it's for a later quest.

My biggest annoyance in this game so far is that rebinding your movement keys completely fucks with the settlement workshop controls as those are all hardcoded. I always use ESDF for movement and as a result in FO3 when doing workshop I can only move right and backwards when I have the workshop up. Really goddamn stupid.

That's a little counteracted by having my brother send me a screenshot of the ingame Museum of Science, where I got married, so looking forward to checking that out even though it's mostly inaccessible.

Really enjoying the game overall, even if I know I should have resisted getting it at release and waited a few months.

What is the best way for you to deal with radiation and get energy cells for my electric guns?

Early on, not a whole lot of options other than rad-away - try not to waste them on minor amounts of rads though. There are doctor NPCs around that'll cure your radiation entirely for a few caps, but you won't find any in the northern part of the Commonwealth so start moving towards Diamond City. The game doesn't really force you to advance the main quest unless you want to, so you could just go see the vendors if you prefer.

There's also recipes (cooking or drugs, forgot which) that help you lower it, but the mats are tricky when you're just starting out.

I'm really tired of the main quest now. Just reached
The Institute and the whole colour pattern and high contrast is giving me a massive headache.

Quick question, is there a point of no return in regards to factions? I'm still pretty early into the game and got named
General
of the Minutemen. Will this interfere with other factions, or will the game just force me to choose between them at a predetermined point?

If it's like Skyrim, I doubt it.

Made it to the east coast today. A lot of the shit is high level but I found a very cool area that reminds me of Point Lookout. Even found an abandoned mansion settlement. Took me forever to clear out the elite ghouls but it's probably my favorite settlement.

Almost 24 hours in, lvl 20, playing on Survival Mode, haven't advanced the main story much at all, or even done many side-quests for that matter. I haven't even been to
Diamond
City. Feels good.

That the swamp area we saw in the pre-release screenshots? Because I totally want to build my treehouse of horror there.

How are you getting the XP? Is it because of the difficulty?

Is there a way to sort the clusterfuck inventory in your workbench stash that I don't know of?
All I see is one giant list of unassorted items (by type). I know you can reorganize them by value, damage, weight, etc, but that's still rather useless when the list gets as long as it does.

Man, I saw the (random event spoiler)
UFO crash yesterday, but it was at night and I was way overencumbered. Gonna be years till I find that. :lol

Isn't there a button for 'component view' or something like that?

I have just been wandering around near the start, I havent done much of the main quest but I feel like a lot of these sweet places I am finding
Boston Mayor Sheltor for example
have quests later on and I wasnt supposed to find it yet.

About 12 hours in and not even to Diamond City yet. This game!

Story time!

So I'm on my way South to kill some Raiders when I come across a wrecked cargo boat. On that boat it a raider named Captain... er I dont remember. Anyways, dude is in Power Armor and loves making headshots with his rifle.

I can't kill him in a mid range fight. I tried several times.

Finally I decide to take the Sniper route and start firing from the shore.

He and his men can't find me. And The Captian starts walking all over the ship trying to find me as I keep putting rounds in him. But the damage is to low and slow.

Well for some reason he and his men jump/fall into the water. While the others swim around and are taken out easily. The Captain sinks like a stone.

But he doesn't drown. He just stands there at the bottom, yelling at me.

So I toss a couple frag grenades onto his head and that's that. Revenge was sweet. I then popped some Rad X, hopped into the water, and took his gear.

In related news: The water plant is a death trap. I'll try again with Power Armor later.

Also, does joining The Brotherhood stop me from being a Minuteman?

Loving everything but the dialog in this game, such a huge step back. I rather have no voice & more choices/options.

That and discovering new locations. Plus I tend to clear out areas of enemies entirely.
Lexington
and the area around the
C.I.T.
are ghost towns in terms of enemies.
Nice. How do you find ammo? I'm playing on normal and it's really difficult to get enough sometimes. Have two perks unlocked as well for more ammo.

You cannot swim with a power suit - that is the reason he drowned like a stone, but didn't die.
