Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Has anyone been able to nail down some specs for running it at Med-High?

I built my first budget PC earlier this year and I'm still unsure how far I can push it before just buying it on console.

My PC is essentially 6 years old (GPU is from 2011) and runs it just fine at a mix of medium and high (not ultra) settings with godrays off and from what I've seen of the console versions it's on par if not better. I'd say you'll be fine if your PC is even relatively spec'd.

Hoping to pick up a new graphics card in the next few months.. My GTX 670 is really starting to struggle to give me anything better than 30 FPS on high settings these days. I'd love to hit a smooth 60 on Ultra again.

When would be the best time to buy some? I'm always hearing about "wait for the haswaldo chipset" or whatever every few months. What's the next big thing going to be and when will it be here?

How do I get shadows not to load in right in front of me? I raised shadow distance in the .ini from 20,000 to 30,000 and it did nothing?

What are your specs?

i5 4460 @ 3.20GHz
8g RAM
Radeon R9 280

I think I'll be okay going off this link I ignored in the OP hahaha. I need to bookmark it for future use.

Has anyone figured out some ini tweaks for the texture pop in? It's sort of random it feels like. Some of it is fine but a lot of things take forever.

I'm getting massive slowdown from 60fps to ~20fps when smoke and other effects are on screen, particularly in indoor areas. GTX 660 2GB.

:(

What are some good settings tweaks to get the game performing better in Diamond City? Currently using the high preset, with god rays at low and shadow distance at medium. Most areas so far have generally run at 60, while the city drops to about 40-45.

I'm trying to limit my framerate with RivaTuner to 30 fps, because the unexplainable drops from 60 are pissing me off, but it's not working. I have added fallout4.exe and fallout4launcher.exe and limited the frames to 30,but when I launch it they are at 60 still. Anybody have any suggestions? Never had a problem with Riva before.

Make sure the side panel is correct

Is the panel thingy set to low? Custom direct3D is on so the steam overlay displays? Everything look good? Oh and press enter when you type in 30

No, that's incorrect. Godrays and shadow distance are the two big frame rate killers.

I picked a bad spot in the city to test some settings, and distance was the only thing that would drop my performance @1080p on my GTX970. Going from medium to high would drop it from 60 (or higher...capped, so dunno) to 36-39. Crazy.

This is the only the second game since I bought my i5 2400 since 2011 that I regret not spending the extra 50-70 dollars it would have cost to get a 2500K, but it's enough to make sure any future CPUs I buy are overclock able. I can everything ultra except God Rays, Shadow Detail and Shadow Distance until I get in town and then it's High, Medium, High respectively. I can maintain 30fps at those setting, but CPU still just about maxxes out.

Thanks.

I have the same exact specs and play with 50+ fps with these settings.

The framerates are all over the place tho. Some areas I'll get over 120 and some it will drop to 50. Rarely below 50, only in some very demanding places like the Corvega plant.

I limited my fps to 72 though.

I'm still experimenting with limiting it to 30fps. What is the exact setting people are using for the smoothest 30fps? Because just setting Rivatuner to 30 is horrible, the screen judders like crazy. I've also tried FPS limit to 30 in NV Inspector but is that as good as it's going to get? I feel like I'm missing something here and I can never remember how to do this exactly.

Something I found gives me about 5 FPS. Tested this by looking out at an area that drops me to about 46 FPS. Then I got about 51 FPS afterwards every single time I've done it.

If you look at your CPU usage by thread, you might find one thread is being tanked. Probably #1.
I went into task manager (CPU 0 in task manager is CPU #1 in Rivatuner's overlay) and I turned that thread off for the game and it instantly gave me that 5 FPS extra.

Sweet. Great to know, thanks.
I'm almost done installing it.

Restarted my pc and now Riva is working. Not sure if I can handle 30fps all of the time though. Might just put up with the drops here and there.

This confuses me. Does it literally disable one of the game's threads, so it's not running something behind the scenes? That seems like asking for problems.

Starting to think this game doesn't play well with Gsync. Gets juddery even at a steady FPS, and the dips below 60 that Gsync normally makes hard to notice were very apparent.

Decided to disable it for the game and it seems to be running better, no more judder at 60 FPS so far at least.

Lowering my settings and draw distances and stuff hasn't done much of anything, if at all for my framerate which i find kind of strange.

Few places give me 30fps dips (from 60) but otherwise a lot of it is pretty solid.

Thank you. Unfortunately you do have the issue. Between 1-2 seconds you can clearly see that as your character begins to move, your cursor stops moving for a split second. Watch it on 50% speed and it is clear. Your cross hair is on the stairs where it meets the crate when it pauses for a split second. If you were turning faster and moving slowing it becomes more apparent.

Luckily for you that you don't notice it during gameplay. Maybe because your framerate is lower that 60? Either way at least it is not bothering you. Maybe I use more slight movement in combat? But whatever it is, it's makes the game barely playable in 3rd person.

I think everyone has this issue. Shocked there is less complaints about it. Guess most people use 1st person and a good portion of those that don't are using m/k and keeping always run on. Or it;s less noticeable on lower frame rates. Either method avoids this horrendous bug.

Thank you so much for doing this!

May have to try this as well, getting to the downtown sections of the map and my fps is all over the place, 60 to as low as 20, I was assuming gsync was the only thing keeping it playable.

Any part with a high up view or random areas downtown are awful.

4770k @ 4.6 and 980ti.

Rss capped to 60
vsync disabled in Ini
fov tweaked to 100
1440p, God rays & shadow dis high, ultra otherwise, K-putts reshade.

Beth just do a absolute shite job with culling?

It doesn't really help with performance as much as the judder was appearing when at high FPS.

I'd wager your FoV might be the bigger issue, there were posts earlier in the thread reporting it has a pretty big FPS hit at times. I have a similar PC, and the only thing that really brings me down is God Rays at High or Ultra, but not 20 FPS dips, usually in the 40-50 range. My FoV is currently only at 80.

Not using it personally anymore but the November Windows update is rolling out and the Insider build supposedly fixed that issue for a lot of people.

Last few pages here talk about it. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1081643&page=11

Thanks. I was looking for that thread.

Looks like I'm behind on updates and I'll have to do it manually.

EDIT: After the update, DS4 works 100% with Fallout 4. Just plug and play.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2 GHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 960
RAM: 8GB

Says I fall below "recommended", but will it play nicely at 1080p?

I got that too for a while until I remembered Nvidia and its stupid way of changing physx settings to cpu when you upgrade drivers.

I hate hope.
Hope got me to rush and check it and make sure...and its still got the problem...F*CK

670gtx same machine runs great, 980gtx nope

Made my issues much much worse.
Actually I think it introduced stutter which I really don't have. Mines almost like some kind of magical issue lol

Ah, I see. Yeah, i really haven't noticed it until you mentioned it. My framerates is indeed below 60, hovering between 40 and 50. Glad to help!
So I guess my underperforming PC actually helps me overcome this gamebreaking bug in 3rd person mode.

--------------------------------------------------------

And I love indoors, I can only get smooth 60fps inside buildings.

Went from having smooth gameplay to booting up the game and I'm now getting really insane screen tearing. No idea why it just started but it looks terrible and I don't know how to fix it.

If you do have low VRAM this could help. I have 18GB because I have 3x GTX 980 Tis, so I'm gonna pass on this one. I can't imagine it having material benefits even if you have one 980 Ti/6GB.

You would think that after buying 3 of them you would know your VRAM pool is still 6GB.

gpu memory doesnt stack.

It's amazing how many people are misinformed about this. Maybe one day we'll have the ability to stack VRAM but it probably won't be anytime soon. I've literally met at least three people in my life who believe that VRAM on GPU's stacks and spoken to dozens more, even on tech forums! I feel like there should be a PSA at this point.

at least half of the people ive spoken to about this stuff count it as stacking. its fascinating.
