Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

I'm pleasantly surprised with how well this game is running for me. All settings on ultra (including Godrays), 1080p, TXAA, locked to 75fps 99.9% of the time. I've only seen it momentarily drop down once or twice, and that was when it was loading something in. I can even manage a locked 60fps playing this through Steam Link on my TV.

I have my game limited to 75fps because if it goes over 100fps then I get stuck while trying to hack terminals which pretty much made the game unplayable for me. Otherwise I was getting around 95-115fps on average.

I haven't seen any textures pop in at all so far, I'll have to try and look for instances of that.

My rig:
5820k 4.4GHz
32GB DDR4 2600 RAM
980Ti OC'd to 1450MHz
512GB SSD (system/OS drive)
1TB SSD (game installed on this drive)

dont hate me but i actually prefer godrays off. the rest is blinding. i quite like my retinas.

Also the weapon switching issue is getting annoying as well, switching a weapon in the middle of a fight only to have the game make me wait 5-10 seconds before actually pulling the weapon I switched to out is getting me into bad situations.

Has anybody found any fixes/something that helps with these things?

I think I'm happier with my mediocre settings with my little engine that could card than a lot of people with their fire breathing dragon PCs.

GTX 750ti 2GB
8GB DDR3

Thanks to RivaTunerSS I have my frames capped to 30, which has removed all the ugly fluctuations and stuttering. My texture quality is set to Ultra while everything else is at a mix of medium and high. Awesome 1080p experience.

I'm quite happy with these settings. The game looks so much better than Skyrim did even with 4K texture replacements. Maybe using a 4 year old game as a benchmark is stupid but Bethsoft games kind of exist in a category all their own. Most importantly I haven't bees distracted with "I wish this ran better" or "this texture is ass" or "these swings from 60 to 45 are giving me a headache".

I was using forced vsync and triple buffering in Amd CCC, but was still getting bad tearing. I eventually just turned the game vsync back on in the ini files and it works great. I don't know why I turned it off in the first place.

i5 2500k
Radeon 5770

Even with almost everything at Low, 1080p is pretty much unplayable (would guess 20fps).

It is really time to upgrade..;-)
Where are you, Radeon 380X?

Get a 390 instead! Or, alternatively spring for a 970 or 980. I've got a 390 and it runs it very well, my major limitation would be my cpu as it's an fx 8350 and the game runs best on Intel chips.

I have the same cpu, same amount of RAM with a r9 380 which is basically the same as the GTX 960.

I get 70-90fps (indoors up to 140) with these settings

In some areas it drops to 55-60 and in some demanding areas like the Corvega plant it can drop to the 40s.

Shadow distance on high causes my fps do drop to 28-32 in some places, so be aware of that. Or maybe it doesn't with Nvidia cards, I don't know.

I'll probably turn some of the settings to ultra and see what I get then.

Framerate counter shows the game is runnning 60fps(everything ultra except gawdray at 1080P)but man judder/stuttering is starting to get annoying.
Changing max pre-rendered frames doesn't seem to eliminate the juddering

Tried Windowed Borderless?
 
Just built a computer yesterday and the only thing on it is fallout 4.

GTX 970
i5 6600K
16gb DDR4 RAM
SSD 500GB

I loaded up my save in Trinity square and I was getting like 45-55fps on Ultra (with high shadows and high godrays) Kind of disappointed that this brand new computer cant run fallout 4 60fps on ultra. Oh well I can lower a few things to high I guess. Also I have only played for 30 seconds on this new computer but why was the load time like 45 seconds when I have it installed on a SSD. I thought SSD were quick!

Try lowering god rays and shadow distance. Both seem very demanding. Luckily you will barely see the difference. God rays have more dither on lower settings but it's only when shafts of light are against an object, and its not very noticble St all. Shadow distance is only noticble when viewing a distance from above, so rare.

I have a 980 and need to drop those settings both to high to get a stable 60.

Thanks for the tips I will try it out. I am more for gameplay than graphics so I would rather play on high or medium without a hitch then slightly stuttery ultra.
 
Does anyone else have issues with random lockups with audio bugs, resulting in having to hard reset the computer? Haven't found any solutions via Google. It's pretty annoying since the game runs very well other then that.
 
Wow so I thought the game was running rough given I have a i7 4790K and Titan X with 32 GB RAM.

Its locked at 30 fps according to the steam counter even with the recommended reductions in rays and shadow distance.

I followed the guides for unlocking the framerate but it didnt help:

Fraps has been capping out at 60 frames-per-second as I play, which obviously isn’t ideal for folks who want to fully utilize their 120 Hz or higher monitors. Here’s how to unlock it:
Head to the Fallout4Prefs.ini file located by default in \Documents\My Games\Fallout4, open it and search for ‘iPresentInterval=1’. Change that 1 to a 0, hit save, and let your framerate run free. Be warned though, we’ve been unable to test it extensively, so unlocking the framerate might have some messy side effects.

After updating both the INI Files in steam folder and in my games folder

man is this frustrating, how can they release a PC game locked at 30 fps by default. it sounds like people can easily get 1080p60 on high end GPU with just a couple minor reductions from ultra

I'd wager your FoV might be the bigger issue, there were posts earlier in the thread reporting it has a pretty big FPS hit at times. I have a similar PC, and the only thing that really brings me down is God Rays at High or Ultra, but not 20 FPS dips, usually in the 40-50 range. My FoV is currently only at 80.

Seems to have been the case, lowering to fov 90 picked up ~15 frames on the minimum side. I've been fortunate not to have any of the judder attributed to g sync. This game is such an odd duck even for Bethesda.

Will this mod let me keep the godrays on without the nasty dithering effect around the characters? (and thanks for taking the time to respond to me)

Also, since you have a card very similar to mine, how does the game run in the later interior parts of the game? I went inside one of the super markets and it in one spot dipped to 26fps but for the rest it stayed above 30fps. Does it run stable enough for you in the interiors?

Game drops to the low 30s in loads of places in Diamond City. Locked 60 when inside or in the wasteland but man, large towns in this game are crazy. Especially since they, well, don't look great.
 
Yeah, I'm gonna chime in on the large cities: they kill performance. I was looking around the web for solutions and most seem to think the shadow distance is borked. Hopefully drivers can fix this issue, game performs so badly when I'm in cities.

Yeah I'm hoping for a fix sometime soon. It doesn't ruin the game for me, but it sucks considering how well the game runs outside of cities.
 
A little more investigation indicates either lighting or shadows kill performance in some areas. Like....massively. I'm @1440p on a 980 Ti playing on Ultra (no AA), and like I said some areas will sit well over 60fps, then all I have to do is hit a bad spot or look in the wrong direction and I can see drops to 45fps. Soon as night hits and the sun is gone performance pretty much doubles.

I was just fucking around in a bad spot then, during the day, an area where I was getting ~45fps. Used my scoped rifle and the fps dropped all the way to 25fps.

The engine really just shits its pants with certain things.
 
Wanna know something? My GPU usage is all over the place even downsampled from 4k and maxed out. My GPU is known to be hot, yet in this game it doesn't go over 70°c.

You shouldn't be surprised your specs are well above recommended specs


Anyone else notice their system running cool despite settings turned up to 11? My Corsair h100i GTX stays in quiet mode despite the 5820K being overclocked to 4.4ghz, same goes for the MSi 390X twin frozr fans (also OC'd to 1125mhz)

Only surprised because it's the first time I've been able to run a Bethesda game at Ultra at a locked 60fps on release, even though I usually have a pretty high end system.

I do think this game is somewhat CPU dependent, and I seem to remember past Bethesda games also being the game (or am I mistaken?)... Don't shadows rely heavily on the CPU with this engine? I may be mixing this up with another game, and if so I apologize.

Edit: To reply to your question, my system stays quiet now that I've limited the fps to 75, but the cooling in my system (h110) was running full speed when the fps was unlocked and getting up to over 100fps.
 
See when I read people getting locked 60+ fps on Ultra with a 980ti I can't help but wonder what bullshit is going on my end. Maybe the old i5 2500K is holding me back for once.

I was running an i5 2500k for like 3 years and though games were running fine I impulse upgraded to an i7 4790k and performance in pretty much every high spec game increased.

People will say it's still an amazing processor (and it is) but there is so much better available now.

It is not impossible, data shows Fallout 4 is heavily CPU bound as expected.
At 1080p my GPU usage never goes above 80% outdoors (980, 4770k).

I also have a 5820k like the guy above and have lock 72fps on my end although the game also has framedrops on areas reported by people here . 980ti with gsync ..
 
Yea sure, medium shadow distance runs great. Looks like absolute shite though with barely any shadows at all. Ive decided to just stop trying to get it to run great, because no matter what settings, it still dips to 30 in places, so im just going to crack everything up and lock it at 30. Fuck it. What a shame.

It does fall quite a bit behind the newer chips (and its i7 counterpart) in this CPU benchmark.
 
So am I correct in assuming, based on what I am seeing in this thread, that this is a case of certain settings just not scaling particularly well?

It seems like the performance difference between the higher settings in certain areas and medium is ridiculous while the visual difference isn't that great.

Seems like when you turn a couple things down, you can get great performance and very comparable visuals.

They haven't reached the most intensive parts yet, obviously. Depending the direction you are facing and the number of buildings the frame rate plummets hard. Worst part I did was the Trinity Tower quest. It was raining during the last part of the quest when you ride the elevator outside and I had below 20FPS on a 970 with an i7-4790k at 1080p on Ultra. There is some optimization problem here.

For what it is worth, I have a i5 2500k and a Radeon HD 7970 and the game runs pretty good at Ultra and perfect at High with 8 GB of Ram. Sounds like you need a new video card, but your CPU is fine.
 
After fiddling with Fallout 4 and nVidia settings for the past hour, I'm now completely lost as to how to proceed.

I've got a 144Hz G-Sync monitor and a 980 Ti. When I loaded up Fallout 4 for the first time, with no changes made whatsoever, it ran at 144Hz. Of course, I ran into the nasty terminal bug, but I was able to run it at 144Hz. Now I'm completely unable to run it at anything higher than 72Hz (unless I uncap it completely and let it get into the 200's), despite having reset everything back to its default value.

Does anyone know how to consistently get the game to run at 144Hz on a G-Sync monitor?

Don't run the game at that framerate. The physics start acting up, your character and movements become too fast etc etc.

Edit: Meant framerate not resolution
