Minute Men Questline Spoilers:
When did goulrs become to fierece?! Holy smokes. I had to do some dancing clearing ou that base. I'm guessing this game is a bit easiler with automatic weapons? Any tips? My main gun is a pipe rifle. Then I have the crank laser and a hunting rifle for bigger badder enemies. On the plus side, a goul dropped leg armor that makes me turn invisible when I am hidden and not moving. That's cool.

I'm doing a sniper/ninja/rifleman build. It feels like I need Gun Nut 2 and a suppressor to really make this shine.

I just got a quest breaking bug.

The quest "curtain call" I'm in the trinity tower and I need to get a lift up to the top but when I go in the lift, the door shuts but the lift doesn't go anywhere. Pressing the button does nothing so I'm trapped in the lift. Anyone else experienced this?

Once it's full you press (at least on PS4) Square for a critical attack.

I'm on PC using a steam controller so I probably don't even have a button for it! I haven't noticed a button prompt to "use crit" at the bottom of the screen where they normally go. As if I've played to level 16 without noticing a core combat mechanic like that.

The Sneak Perk really helps a lot. I have people running towards me and firing in my direction and I still get "Sneak x4" when I shoot at them. lol

Yep -- the Rifleman perk affects anything that isn't fully automatic, whether it's shotgun, plasma, etc. Though you can modify a combat shotgun to become automatic, in which case it would benefit from Commando instead.

Rifleman affects ALL rifles that are non-automatic. That obviously includes shotguns (not with automatic receiver obviously) and even energy rifles.

awesome!
thanks guys.

Dogmeat kinda vanished. One minute he was there and then, before I realized it, he wasn't. Oh well. Codsworth is superior anyway.

"GOOD SHOW" *Flamethrower* *Buzzsaw*

45 hours, beat the main quest finally.

I actually enjoyed this storyline more than Fallout 3's. The gimped (compared to F:NV) dialogue trees were crap but didn't detract from my enjoyment.

Now back into the game to finish the side quests and sink my teeth into getting my settlements built up!

holy fuck.

now that is what im looking for.

OK, first task for today: finding a good hunting rifle!
thanks sir, this helped me.

Oh, does the rifleman perk also affect shotguns? I dont think so, but there also doesnt seem to be a dedicated shotgun perk?

A tool tip I read said they were in the same category.

There is also a "Combat Sniper Rifle" in the game (see below). It deals less damage but fires much faster and has double the mag size. I still prefer the traditional sniper rifle tho. In particular with my x4 sneak damage. I one shot everything. If I get swarmed, I use VATS. If there is a tough enemy out of nowhere, better criticals + critical banker makes short work out of them. Also, a critical shot will ALWAYS HIT! So if you have a difficult shot at 1%, use a crit and get rid of that pesky legendary misslelauncher guy.
Heh, I have both weapons as well but I use the Combat Rifle and gave the Bolt-Action to my companion. Like you said, it deals less damage but the rate of fire and 40 round clip more than make up for that. It allows me to queue up 4 shots in VATS, and most enemies are dead in 2. Add in the AP regen perk (and equipment) and I'm ready to VATs two more in like 3 seconds flat. Love that gun.

So today I decided to redeem the Fallout 3 code that I got with the digital version of Fallout 4. But as soon as I try to redeem it, it says something went wrong and shows an error code. I can't find anything on the code though. I am not at home right now, so I can't look for it now. Anyone else got this?

Console? or PC?

WetRadioactiveMonkey, you want that sexy Gauss rifle + VATS.

With some of the perk bonuses its a 1 hit weapon :D

I found a really sweet scope on a rifle, I think it is a "Recon" scope it is big and square and is awesome to snipe with. I wish more enemies were out in the open.

Vault 81
Went in expecting something fucked up, instead its a happy and functioning Vault (after i killed the molerats etc). Well boo.

So far the Legendary drops have been disappointing. Best one I've bought is a Sub machine gun that fires explosive bullets

Companions wise: I got Strong, but he disapproved of everything I did so I sent him to Guard a settlement. Piper was OK but she only has a 10mm. Curie is great though so far.

Found the
Silver Shroud
but not sure what to do with it yet.

Oh and the comic shop was great.

The base building stuff is kind of overwhelming for me. Anyone have some tips? I am only level 6 for reference and only did the Commonwealth mission.

I had this. Log out of your Xbox account from your browser, then log back in and redeem it again. It then worked for me.

Are centaurs in the game ?

Not seen any so far, I think mutant doggies have kind of replaced them.

Im up to the part in the main questline where it tells me to seek help from the railroad, minutemen, or brothethood of steel. do i have to join a faction to ask them for help? Commonwealth is pretty greedy, you do people a solid and they wont return the favor, for every 10 favors you do for them, they'll do you one solid. :P what are the pros and cons of joining each faction? Also i heard (4th faction spoiler i think)
you can join the institute, im guessing you only get that option after this quest?

I lost Dogmeat and I need him for a story quest. I don't want to enter commands in the console yet but I don't even know where to start looking for him. I've checked Sanctuary and the first truckstop.

So after 24 hours of binge playing and probably close to 32-34 hours total I have some phases I went through. I'm now at the point that I've sided with a faction permanently and can't go back (minus the saves I created). I'm also at level 27.

I've gone from picking up every item and being excited about the settlement aspect of the game to completely forgoing it. I was excited at first then started to do some more serious missions and remembered how fun the main/faction quests are. I am also now at the point where I'm skipping most inside exploration since I am crafting less (which were wasted perks now). I'll look roughly for magazines and bobbleheads, but am no longer looting every little thing. I skip a lot of smaller enemies and am mostly running and gunning at this point (which is the opposite of my VATs build idea). Being near the end of the game and knowing I'll roll back saves to try out a different faction is freeing me to use everything in my arsenal. It's kind of fun but also trivializing the content. I'll get back to scavenging and conserving with my next faction allegiance which will be my end-game playthrough.

TL;DR. So basically I'm playing the game completely differently than I expected making some of my perks useless and am completely exhausted and too bothered to loot. I've reached the end and my wealth of supplies and weapons makes me an indestructible force (minus that damn raider shooting mini-nukes at me, seriously wtf).

I lost Dogmeat and I need him for a story quest. I don't want to enter commands in the console yet but I don't even know where to start looking for him. I've checked Sanctuary and the first truckstop.

Had this problem, he showed up at Red Rocket after about 20 minutes. They actually travel back by foot sometimes (not joking) and it can take a while.

I'm finding 5.56 ammo left and right, but have yet to find a rifle that supports that caliber.

Further south you go the better weapons/items you start finding. I've found a few Assault Rifles there that use the ammo.

He is right outside Kellog's house if that is the quest you are on. Happened to me yesterday spent 45 min looking for him :(

I think this happened to me and I was able to fix it by fast traveling out and back in.

Ok guys, I need your advice.
I've put in around 50 hours into the game, but I'm not that excited about my build so I've started to rush through the main-story to get to the end and quickly restart my obligatory "evil lady"-rebuild on Survivor-difficulty.

But should I quit my current game and restart right now while there's still much to experience or keep going until the end? Current story quest:
The Glowing Sea

I'm torn!

In my latest alternate realty vs Boston as I know it:

First time I saw the USS Constitution ingame I got a good chuckle out of it.

Alternate Hancock Tower (which was recently renamed) and Trinity Church Plaza were cool.

I don't know if it was actually intentional, but naming the subway stops 'MTA' was incredibly appropriate - while it's the MBTA now, 1947 - 1965 it was the MTA, so if you went with the 'Go from 50s and extrapolate' then the naming is appropriate. Still, they might have done that by accident just trying to do alternate names.

I had dinner in downtown Concord last night, sadly there's not really anything there that stands out so much as to translate into the game well.

I briefly visited the Commons in game, slightly more creepy than the real life version...

Diamond City is awesome in its absurdity.

I'm already dreading going into the Mass Pike tunnels... I hope it's wall to wall cars down there, to properly reflect what it would look like when the bombs would have gone off.

Sorry, but I find remarks like these utterly ridiculous. It's like you all played different games than I did and make Fallout some sort of hallmark for "deep RPGs". It's not and never was. How is dumping 20+ points into "Small Guns" any different from getting 1 rank in "Rifleman" or "Commando", depending on what you want to specialize in? The new system is much more complex than the old system at its core. It's much improved overall and you now have much more flexibility while being able to be much more focused at the same time. You have way more weapons and all of them can be customized. Now it's not a deep crafting system, but it's still a decent addition and allows for a much better progression than any Fallout before. Found a Sniper Rifle? Set for the game. No upgrade, no nothing. Oh, got access to power armor? Set for the game. It makes exploration and leveling quite more enjoyable this time around.

i guess i did play a different game? i really don't know where you're getting your conclusions from given that the focus of world interactivity and character building through your actions is what made the original two fallouts "classic RPGs" in the first place. beyond that, in terms of character builds... are you seriously stating that a game that has a shooter-oriented focus has more depth than a dice roll/classic RPG in terms of builds? like, if you want to argue the aspect of accessibility or enjoyability that's extremely solid ground to work from, but from a depth perspective i seriously cannot imagine how you'd come to that conclusion without only drawing from FO3/NV's system. and even then i'd say it's a flawed conclusion.

rather than considering "well it's 20 points in small guns or a perk point in rifleman", think about it in terms of how you can differentiate characters you'd be building- with NV's system you have the choice of not only 'small guns, big guns or energy weapons' but also weapon types within that category, ammunition types and then perks with specific bonuses to very specific types of weapons. you also have to work with the limitations of your SPECIAL stats and the level limit. for example, a cowboy build is very possible in NV and the game specifically has tons of things that let you build towards it in regards to perks, skill choices, outfits, whatever.

in fallout 4 you make a character that gets stronger over time infinitely with no real goal towards builds and no real strong differentiation beyond player preference between melee or ranged weapons- the categories are so streamlined that i'd imagine most players ultimately end up running with similar weaponsets or builds once they decide their preference between melee or ranged combat.

also just as a weirdo nitpick, fo4 does not have nearly even close to the same amount of guns NV does.there's a pretty linear path of modification beyond the choice of scopes and automatic/semi auto (where applicable) so i don't really think you can use that argument that the number of variable modifiable weapons makes the inherent number of weapons greater than FO3 or NV- they're still the same weapons, but with a range for improvement rather than an entirely different weapon altogether.
NV has (iirc) 4 tiers of guns for every subcategory- off the top of my head in the small arms category you've got: semi-auto pistols, revolvers, shotguns, semi-auto rifles, lever/bolt-action rifles and automatic rifles. this doesn't include uniques, which have their own unique models.
in the same category, fallout 4 has like 9 weapons that could fall under this category. maybe 10 if you really push it, haha. legendary weapons add a lot of variety to this so that's pretty arguable in terms of gameplay differentiation but as a comparison just sheer numbers?
to a degree i feel like the modding actually takes away some of the personality behind the weapons, as bizarre as that statement sounds, haha. it's like.. the difference between lever action rifles and semi-auto rifles in NV was a genuine thing in the way they were designed from a gameplay flow aspect while the progression between a laser rifle modded to do burning damage or have the sniper barrel doesn't really change much in terms of how i actually use the gun. moving from the pipe rifle to the hunting rifle to the gauss rifle didn't feel very different, nor did moving from the combat rifle to the assault rifle... maybe it's just because i go ham regardless of the weapon i'm using

i dunno, i guess you're gonna have to explain your thoughts more because i just see fallout 4's builds being so streamlined that there can't possibly be as much depth to them as the strong specialization you'd find in the BI/obsidian games.
sorry if i come off like a dumb asshole, that's probably just sleep deprivation and internet attitude- i'm trying to argue in earnest 'cuz i feel like i'm missing something here.

also, did you rename all your unique weapons? c'mon, you don't like the 'lil injoke with Le Fusil Terribles? i cracked up when i saw that name and effect since that was my favorite FO3 weapon

Are there no assault rifles (FO 3 version) in this?
nope, the assault rifle you get is different and can be semi-auto or auto depending on your mod choices. remember that there's no 'energy weapons' category so you can also substitute in your energy weapons for automatics if you feel you're missing that gap in your arsenal

you want that sexy Gauss rifle + VATS.

With some of the perk bonuses its a 1 hit weapon :D

boy howdy is this the truth. shit is ridiculous, especially with a certain mungo mayor's bugged as fuck perk

You can lock yourself out of trophies but I believe you do not get locked out of the missions for each faction until you are openly hostile towards them in a few missions from now. The game will explicitly tell you that you are about to ruin relations and let you click yes or no. But if you are going for platinum in the shortest amount of time make a special save here.

At first the lockpicking being exactly the same standard Bethesda locksmithing made me roll my eyes. After a few hours I'm actually pretty grateful as I started the game being shit hot at lockpicking.

I need to get on and finish some quests as for a while all I've been doing is hunting down wood and steel and working on my vertical settlement. Decided to make a high shanty town around the Red Rocket building and rather pleasingly haven't noticed a vertical restriction yet. Definitely a shame that your own structures suffer from serious pop in.

That said, the dialogue IS dumbed down and I feel that you have overall less "different approaches" in quests and skill checks are missing, a change that I also don't like. Then again, Fallout skill checks are among the worst kind, since everything is %-based. F4 still does that for charisma checks and I still hate it. Hard skill checks or bust.

to be honest i found the "rifleman" or "commando" affecting dmg stupid. In the old games the skills only affect your accuracy which makes much more sense. Your gun doesnt magically do more dmg just because your skills are high. You just aim better, can shoot their head instead of torso.
But i guess in this FPS they have to bump dmg to make the skills meaningful.

Dammit I really liked the design super creepy and disturbing

Saving for an expansion pack maybe? Been a while since the Mutants were the primary antagonists.

I found the hidden stuff etc, I get that the place could have been a tomb but that didn't happen and so its a well adjusted living place.

Yeah true, it's not as dark as the other places. But still, could have been.

Worst part is, nobody was aware of it.

Yes. My armor are also named "1 HEAVY ARMOR R. LEG" etc, so it's much easier to NOT sell my equipment and have everything together. x)

I dealt with my second
Queen Mirelurk
in the
Massachusetts State House
using two mini-nukes and a missile before it could even move. Absolutely devastated the thing.

Hit Covenant last night, really enjoyed that line. Didn't take all that long but felt much more involved than most content I've done so far.

It also just occurred to me that the people I started with in Sanctuary weren't all pre-assigned to do something... d'oh. Was able to get over that 6 person hump that I had been stuck on for a while pretty fast after realizing that. I had been prioritizing transport routes for when I got new settlers, so I had fallen behind on some needs as a result. Game really, really needs a UI for managing settler roles (and a fix for rebinding movement keys causing all sorts of miscellaneous issues).

Trying to do about five locations with varying themes - Sanctuary for the rich, that farm nearby as a major industry hub, Red Rocket as my base of military operations, the boathouse I'm not sure of yet (trading outpost?), and the Drive In will be as big a city as I can make it. I eagerly await mods to add walls and roofs that aren't filled with holes, unless there's some that unlock at some point in the game.
