Consumed by tragedy and left for dead, one man will walk a dangerous path to punish those who wronged him. Vengeance is all that remains, and only one thing is certain; dying is the easy part.

A tactical, turn-based western of six-shooters and the supernatural, Hard West (http://store.steampowered.com/app/307670) is now available on PC (Win/Mac/Linux), including the Collector's Edition with a digital art book, comic book, and original soundtrack by Marcin Przybyłowicz (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt).

About the game:
Follow Warren on his descent into the darkest recesses of the human soul, and try to survive in a world full of hard choices and even harder consequences. In this world, death is a constant presence and the black pacts you make will forever haunt all those around you.

Fight your way through 40 missions of henchmen, cultists, and cannibals in your quest for vengeance. Uncover the plans of the ancient powers at play and make difficult choices that resonate throughout your journey. Collect and combine poker cards to craft special abilities, and arm yourself with an eclectic collection of firearms including outlandish prototypes of the era.

Hard West is the second game from Warsaw-based studio, CreativeForge Games, and features the talented writing of Haris Orkin (Company of Heroes 2, Dying Light and Call of Juarez series), and an original score composed by Marcin Przybyłowicz (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt).

Reviews are pretty lackluster:

IGN: 7.3
Destructoid: 5/10
The Escapist: 3.5/5

:(

I mean, games like this usually lack a certain amount of polish and the things that put AAA games over the top, so it's best to watch video impressions or something to figure out whether the flaws bother you or not before making the plunge. I've found that this works well for smaller budget indie games.

Booooooo. But thanks for posting. Will keep a look out for some more user reviews / gaffer opinion and lets play type things. Was going to just buy it and see if I liked it, then refund in the worst case scenario

So, I played the first "scenario" of this (the scenarios are little self-contained stories that have some degree of roguelike-ness to them, as far as I can make out).

It's pretty good. It would make a better tablet game perhaps, as both the strategic and tactical layers feel a little shallow compared to other games in the genre. It's still fun, but on first play it kinda sorely needs an overwatch action, as you get into a lot of annoying stalemates where you have to back off and wait for risk of being flanked. And it really is a game of flank or be flanked; there are not a lot of dice rolls at work here (it even rounds hit percentages >80% up to 100%).

Also, you don't seem to have more than two or three characters available at any one time, so it doesn't have anything approaching the synergy of actions, buffs, throwables and general sequencing that, say, vanilla XCOM does.

It is super-stylish and the little encounters and narrative there have been so far have been satisfying. We need more Weird West games.

This is not a classic on first play, but it has lots of cool ideas and feels unique.

The luck mechanic of this seems really neat. I love the atmosphere too. Definitely wishlisted, though I still need to actually play XCOM before I pick up something else along those lines.

Eurogamer review - no label

Despite its limitations, then, Hard West is a game that punches well above expectations. Its developers took some bold design decisions that, for the most part, really pay off. It's occasionally clunky and frequently exploitable, but it's also genuinely memorable. CreativeForge Games may not be the best writers in the business, but they sure as hell ain't no snake oil salesmen.

I like what i ve played so far (only about 2 hours in) but the lack of manual saving means that you have to redo the whole maps (combat areas) if someone dies. And its very easy to die because most can one shot you.

As the poster above said the lack of an overwatch mechanic means you have to be really far from enemies or you MUST kill them otherwise they will flank you and one shot you meaning you have to redo the whole area.

I just did one of the missions 3 times. Too bad the game doesnt autosave either in time passed or anything like that only before and after combat missions.

If you dont mind that though the game has some great atmosphere, interesting setting and characters.

I'm sure I will no be disappointed with a XCom in a Fantasy-Far West.
And it only cost me 6€ during the Kickstarter
:D

Another review for this. Eurogamer seems to enjoy it.

This quote from the game in their review is hilarious:

"Solomon locked himself in the workshop for an entire day. He built a mining drill to extract the meteor from the crater. He also built an insanity gauge, so that whenever he visited a location, he could observe the gauge to check that area's Madness level."

A mining drill AND a good old-fashioned insanity gauge? All in a day's work.

Probably wont get this because the entire UI will probably be tiny as fuck playing about 9 feet away on my 55 inch HDTV...getting sick and tired of this and boycotting...

That being said,it also looks complicated as fuck...which is not always a bad thing but not in the mood for that right now...I also was disappointed in Banner Saga and besides the art style, seems similar.

It's actually not that complicated, especially the tactical layer. It plays faster (and much simpler) than XCOM.

Also, I'm really enjoying it despite its flaws and shallowness.

Played a bunch of it. Very neat game. I love the aesthetic and setting. It is a bit shallow but still enjoyable.

My review for ACG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPaeGYLBqyI
Rated it a Buy

Absolutely fantastic mix of gameplay styles that I wasn't expecting and a character builders dream. Lots of ways you could go about things with the card system.

Love how simple the gameplay is. Its so pick up and play at first and then if you want to do the more advanced stuff you can if you don't don't. It just works.

I played a number of the missions with 2 totally different builds and hot damn it was awesome. Lots of upcoming stuff it sounds like as well.

Game seems to be selling ok?

Will pick up if support is good and there is a moderate discount during the winter sale. Too many tbed games to play right now.

lol. Never thought I'd say that.

Game is awesome, negative reviews are bullshit, buy the Collector's Edition for that GOAT soundtrack.

Into the Darkness/Who Killed the World! A bit of Fury Road in there.

The composer did Ancient Space as well. Even though I didn't buy the Collector's Edition, I got the soundtrack, maybe as I pre-ordered?

People who pre-ordered before the delay got bumped up for free I think.

Okay, this game is a hell of a lot of fun. I may need to kick the difficulty up, though, because I am tearing the second Warren scenario apart.

Also, it would be a really superb multiplayer game. Make a bunch of maps (symmetrical and asymmetrical), make it 1v1 or factional. Give people a budget to spend on units, cards, weapons and items. Have at it.

Well, I had been on the fence, but your review sold me on this. Can't wait to dive in

I need this game asynchronous on my phone.

It's sold roughly 10k copies according to Steam Spy which isn't great. I'd love for the game to play up so they can start porting/improving/continuing it as a series.

Patch released:

Hard West 1.1 Patch Notes

- Fixed AI behavior in evaluating flanking movement and range.
- Decreased point-blank range to 4, increased AI avoidance area around player characters to 5 (reaction shot range +1).
- AI now will not move directly into the point-blank range of players also when out of combat (like roaming).
- Fixed a glitch in AI movement rules which would bring it into point-blank attack range.
- Minor pathfinding fix for specific tactical situations.
- Adjusted difficulty during the optional Mexican Town fight (As Good As Dead scenario)
- Adjusting the mining/prospecting mechanic for difficulty and clarity (will take effect upon scenario restart).
- Fixed credits display issue.
- Friday restored.
- Preparing ground foe UI fixes for resolutions above Full HD in 1.2 patch.
- Addressed the issue of characters shooting through the floor in certain cases.
- Fixed target selection with LMB on targets which are 'sensed' and in field of fire.
- Fixed no fade-in when returning to the strategic in the first scenario.

Later next week (the week of Nov 23rd) a more substantial 1.2 patch will be released, we're in the process of gathering notes for it:
- Addressing the issue of some Mac users unable to progress past scenario one.
- UI optimization for resolutions above Full HD.
- Stability tweaks.
- Further difficulty adjustments based on your feedback.
[list to be updated as we prepare the patch]

So is this like Xcom style combat?
Similar in that it's turn-based, you're taking cover, etc.

Different in that there's no overwatch and you die in a few shots, so success relies on heavily on positioning and flanking. Plus there are cool abilities, many supernatural, like ricocheting shots, scoring extra damage on enemies if they're in the shade, turning invisible in darkness, and so on

It's more chess game than XCOM ever was. You need to move around, rather than sticking to single spots and setting up overwatch crossfires

I mean, it was a kickstarter game, funded $94k asking $70k, funded by 4300 backers, so those 6k copies were probably pretty profitable for them, Or maybe my KS math is bad. Seems like it's done ok for them, obviously could do better and it needs word of mouth.

Ok might check it out. Thanks for the info ^^

I have played three scenarios so far and i have been enjoying this. Third scenario (Undertaker) wasn't as good as first two though, imo (too much clicking in the world map). Music is cool, haunting. That card system is interesting, i would imagine that multiplayer mode, which there is NOT, would be lot of fun with that. Story is interesting and it keeps me going.

Then some cons. Game feels unpolished, i hope they will increase the performance and optimization with upcoming patches. Also more voice overs (by Death) in some of the events what happens in the world map would have been great. With that, it could feel more deeper and meaningful. Now it feels that stuff just happens and you are clicking away. Overall, world map stuff feels quite superficial, partly because of that. But otherwise it's solid game and thanks to the unique setting it stands out from other games.

Patch 1.2 is out in the wild:

- UI should now work correctly in all resolutions above Full HD.
We're looking into the possibility of fully supporting nonstandard screen ratios and will keep you posted.
- Fixed: an enemy brought down to 0 HP with the Barrage ability sometimes remains alive.
- Fixed: having Old Man Murray join the fight in the optional rescue mission would sometimes lock the game.
- Fixed: desynchronized animation of using dynamic cover objects while the character is already 'sticking' to it.
- Fixed: missing localization on one of the buttons.
- Fixed: an erratic notification of a wound turning into a scar on a character from a different Scenario.
- Stability tweaks.
- Further difficulty adjustments based on your feedback.
- Movement path helper now changes color depending on the number of Action Points needed to reach a given location.
- The available ammo counter has been changed to be more clear and easy to read.
- Fixed: Florence no longer trolls players by joining the search party looking for her.
- Mac: jury-rigged fix: disabled a plugin causing the game to crash to black screen for some players upon starting missions. It should solve issues for now but we'll refine the solution further in 1.3.

Next, patch 1.3, should come out 5th of december.

I just got this last night and I really fucking enjoy it. Very fun tactical combat and I think the style is very nice, It's not necessarily X-com in the sense of having a base to build and going out on free form missions but the combat flow is very similar and there's a good amount of customization on the characters. Only real bug I experienced in my first playthrough is that the menus sometimes lock up for a few seconds. Nothing horrible although it is annoying but it's out of combat anyways.

I would say it's X-com combat mixed with like a very lite RPG system where you make a choice and that can drive very devastating or positive outcomes. I only played on Normal and it seems a little easy but you can bump it up one more which I'm sure will give a good challenge.

Seems like the scenario runs could be reasonably short that it makes a good pick up and play game but I haven't completed one yet (one of my main characters for shreked in Iron Man mode) so we'll see on that one.

Extremely positive first impression though. It's only like $12 on GMG with a code atm too!

Seem like there wasn't a ton of interest in this game but I noticed it's on sale for 6.99 atm if anyone was interested but waiting on a price drop. It's a cool game!
