BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. (CBS Seattle)– A kindergarten teacher in Washington state is banning the use of Legos among her male students in the name of “gender equity.

Bainbridge Island Review reports that Captain Johnston Blakely Elementary teacher Karen Keller doesn’t allow male students to play with the blocks in order to encourage use among females. She even makes up excuses sometimes to set her agenda in order.

“I always tell the boys, ‘You’re going to have a turn’ — and I’m like, ‘Yeah, when hell freezes over’ in my head,” Keller told the Bainbridge Island Review. “I tell them, ‘You’ll have a turn’ because I don’t want them to feel bad.”

Keller says she started doing this because boys were flocking to the colorful blocks during their “free choice” playtime, while girls tended to play with dolls or crayons. Keller hopes by blocking use of the toys for boys that female students may be encouraged to play with them.

The teacher says that Lego play helps with development acceleration and math skills, while dolls offer little challenge or opportunity for growth.

She first used pink and purple Legos to try to attract the girl students to play with the toys, but she found this ineffective. Soon after she requested funds from the school to purchase Lego Education Community Starter Kits. She did not tell school officials that access to the toys would be denied for male students.

“I had to do the ‘girls only Lego club’ to boost it more,” Keller said. “Boys get ongoing practice and girls are shut out of those activities, which just kills me. Until girls get it into their system that building is cool, building is ‘what I want to do’ — I want to protect that.”

Keller says the practice is “fair” because she’s giving different students the tools they need to succeed.

“I just feel like we are still so far behind in promoting gender equity,” Keller added.

Start out with good intentions but end up becoming the villain.

Maybe you shouldn't be a Kindergarten teacher.

You gotta be kidding me, Im sorry but if she was teaching my son and I read this I would have very unpleasant words with her.

You could just buy another damn set of legos and say one set is for boys and another is for girls. So both genders have equal access and then let the kids decide what they want to play with. What she's doing is stupid.

Lol what the hell. Lying to a little kid and not allowing them access to something another sex has is not gender equality. Surely this teacher could come up with a fair way to allow everyone to play with Legos.

Watching someone else playing with Lego bricks and being told that I can't might be just about the saddest thing I'm capable of imagining.

Maybe those particular girls didn't want to play with the legos.

Dreadful approach. How about stocking only gender-neutral, creative toys (including LEGO) and getting rid of the dolls entirely?

I hope she doesn't get fired and then gets a job in air traffic control. I also hope Breitbart doesn't latch onto this as proof we're doomed.

Why do people think gender bias among children is some made up make believe thing that can be conditioned out of children like it is unnatural?

It sounds more like she has a chip on her shoulder about men in general and is taking it out on the boys in her class. Sounds like she is using gender equality as an excuse to get away with it.

So dumb. Let the girls have their dolls if that's what they want and let the boys have the legos. She really should'nt be in a teaching position.

No matter your gender, you will suffer when you step on a Lego. That's equality.

The only truth that matters.

Her naked contempt for playing with dolls reminded me of this:

How did someone like this get a teaching job?

That's not how you teach or encourage.

It's like they didn't learn anything from their educational psych courses

So she gets extra legos that are pink to attract girls.

They still don't give a shit, so she says "Fuck it, boys don't get to use them now because reasons".

Well, what do the boys get to play with? Regardless, hard to see how you can hold opinions "X toy is good for children's' development" and "I don't let Y gender play with them" simultaneously without a wee bit of malice.

Why doesn't she just stock nothing but Legos if she thinks dolls are so pointless?

Exactly

Get more Lego sets, and if she doesn't want the girls to play with dolls, don't have dolls in her classroom.

I don't understand why she thinks she has to exclude the boys, that's some weird mentality.

Wait... How in the hell is banning boys from playing with Legos while allowing the girls to play with them, gender equality?
