Kindergarten Teacher Bans Legos For Boys Citing ‘Gender Equity’

I know you guys are all mostly men and that's the core emotional reason you feel slighted by this story, despite the attempts at empirical logic and rational objective reasoning.

That said, I also know what this teacher did is an overreaction. It'd be like seeing the pink and purple girls aisle in a toys r us, with the brooms and the ovens and makeup and shit, and banning boys from the store because of it.

Yeah, I think this is one of the cases where one should just let girls have equal time, not more time. That said, you guys KNOW men need a handicap, right? You understand that equality will never be a reality if we don't voluntarily sacrifice our own overwhelming dominance in certain instances, right?

I guess what I'm saying is don't let this one teacher's misjudgement color your perception of the whole issue going forward.

Boys need the handicap.

Look at our patriarchy. What don't you understand? In order for the world to actually have gender equality, us men have to voluntarily take a hit in certain places. We'll live.

I do, however, agree with this for the most part. Poor execution.

No, fuck that. I say we just get the girls up on the boys' level in these things instead of bringing the boys down. Even if there are some places where certain privileges would need to be decreased in order to balance things out, kindergarten legos are not that. Instead of this bullshit have the actual competence to come up with solutions that lets the kids to have equal access to said legos. You won't promote gender equality to little impressionable boys by denying them the legos for reasons they are "too young/innocent" to understand while watching the girls play with the said legos. You find ways to teach equality to children from young age. Don't settle for preferential treatment in order to offset some of the gender unbalance. The intention and the end goal here is propably noble but it will not result in the said goal.

It's a safe bet most of those boys are packed up with Lego at home and the girls aren't, seems like a well-intentioned but ultimately misguided attempt to address that imbalance and the teacher has my support.

No its not a safe bet and no it wasn't well intentioned. It's a fucking stupid idea on the level of me wondering if she is any smarter than the children she teaches.

OK, this post is just you excusing and justifying your own vitriol by presuming things about the way I debate outside of this thread and criticizing my (obviously) flawed writing techniques, rather than giving me measured reasons for why I should think the way you do. I've misused the term "ad hominem" in the past, but I think(?) that's close to what your posts amount to.

Alright, I think we should tone it down... My last post was maybe a bit too snarky. You don't have to respond to this post if you don't want to, I'm sure you'll have lots to respond to that's more on-topic. I used a mild pejorative because, yeah, I had an emotional reaction to your post. I wouldn't consider my language vitriolic, though. Lots of other people are giving those measured reasons, I was just pointing out how arguments like "You guys KNOW I'm right, right?" aren't arguments at all. You've reached a conclusion without constructing an argument first, thus begging the question. It's not a great way to start, especially if you're saying something controversial.

Yeah, and I think a lot of people might take what I wrote to mean I don't fully understand that boys are having trouble in school right now when compared to girls. But those boys are still growing up to a world where they're paid more, allowed to do whatever they want with their bodies, and become marginalized in several areas, especially globally.
I don't want to stop supporting human beings. I'm just saying that some girls work twice as hard for half as much payoff after their education.

What? Dude, take the derivative of the function. Women are already increasing in advantage in every single level of education, and they're already above men all the way through the graduate level. How does stunting boy's growth in kindergarten improve educational equality in any way?

And the rest of those things have nothing to do with education whatsoever. We should prevent boys from playing with Legos because globally, women don't have control over their bodies? What? Are you just a random word generator?

Also the plural of Lego is Lego. Come on OP.
Where I'm from the plural is definitely Legos. Is there official branded literature on this or is this a cultural thing? Googled it and, well, there's a silly rabbit hole that could be entertaining but it seems like the s plural is safe and actually more widely used (in America at least) and that the company doesn't want the toys referred to as Lego or Legos, for whatever reason.

Lego company itself states that the plural of Lego is Lego.

The idea is noble. But holy shit does the execution ever need some work

I like that she is trying though, but there has to be a better way. At least people are thinking about it though.

Just got a late edit in but... that's not what that says. They say there is no plural for Lego because that is the company name. The plural for Lego brick is Lego bricks, but they really can't control that people have pulled a Kleenex and Band-Aid with the product.

No, just an apparently misguided crusader too naive to wait for things to change on their own over time

You know the type

For the record, we sure are focusing on the kindergarten aspect (I guess because this is the thread we're having the discussion), but I've already said I don't agree with the teacher in this scenario. Don't ban boys from the toy store. I just reject the notion that she was a total nincompoop and didn't have her heart in the right place, etc.

'You’re going to have a turn’ — and I’m like, ‘Yeah, when hell freezes over’

This is a series of thoughts she had towards children in Kindergarten. Her heart is not in the right place.

When she's lying and saying in her head "when hell freezes over," I can't agree that her heart is in the right place.

Regardless, "Legos" is just plain wrong. Other people may be uninformed, but you no longer are.

Alright, thanks man. I see where you're coming from now. I'll try to learn from my mistakes here.

Same about the emotional reaction, when I see something that bugs me I want to cut to the core immediately because 1. I know we're all irrational humans and I hate arguing in circles about things other than the core emotional issue, and 2. I'm kind of impatient.

Yeah, from the article she comes off in a bad light for sure. Are we just mad about this one specific person? I was seeing a lot of posts in here claiming women didn't need an educational leg up in general and took offense to it, but I suppose a lot of people are also making the point that the education system isn't always the problem, it's what happens after-- job opportunities, stereotypes, etc.

Get that nuance out of here. We're GAF! Everyone is either a villain or a saint! No exceptions!

I'm not gonna join the pile on, I'm just gonna pose the question of who the fuck determined purple is a girl's colour? Fuck y'all. I rock the purple and it rocks me. We rock it hard together, so step off!

Both ways are wrong. And yet, they're called Legos where I'm from and it is a non-issue. Knowing Band-Aid was a brand name since forever never made me start asking for a Band-Aid brand adhesive bandage. Just a piece of curiosity. You'd think the companies would be proud to have their names appropriated into the language. Probably something legal with them not being able to claim responsibility over corruptions.

Anyway, on topic, that teacher is an idiot and the idea that anyone needs to be held back for the sake of progress strikes me as ludicrous, especially so when you're referring to children.

I've always seen purple as a gender neutral color, it just happens to go nicely with pink.

this makes no sense, she bans the boys from playing with Lego's but continues to let the girls color and addition to play with the Legos? these children are playing with what the find interesting, they have no clue what "gender equity" is and don't need to be used for some gender equity experiment.

I rock black and pink Nike shoes all the damn time.

I'm not of the belief boys and girls would 100% be the same if we removed gender roles and conventions from the equation, but colours being divided by gender is a pretty stupid societal norm I'm glad society has been gradually moving away from.

You are my personal hero and I will follow you to the depths of hell and back for this.

I wore neon pink all the time in the 90's. What happened? :(

From a legal perspective, your brand name being appropriated as a descriptive term is a nightmare scenario, as you lose the trademark for that brand.

In terms of Lego/Legos, Lego is the correct term. Legos is the moral term, as its really funny to watch fans twitch and lose their shit over it.

Something something good intentions. Thats great that she wants to promote equality but restricting others in order to advance another is not remotely close to equality.

Something something good intentions.

The path to something something is plagued with etc. etc.?

Not everyone who adheres to a beneficial mindset is going to be a genius and represent it perfectly. Doesn't mean we should go after the mindset.

Don't get me wrong-- if we can reach gender equality without handicapping one gender over another, I'll be psyched. It just seems so impossible with so many conservative and advantaged people running things.

I'm more concerned that some asshat is denying kindergarten boys the ability to play with LEGO bricks to try and get more girls to play with it, rather than how someone chooses to pluralize or spell LEGO.

She could always get the girls Mega Blocks...
That's a joke, please don't kill me!

This is the only way it will happen without some kind of total societal collapse that resets everything.

Are you cool with that then? Gender inequality always being a thing because it's too late/hard/infeasible to fix it? Or because it requires marginalization of a certain dominant group of people, even if their hearts are in the right place or simply don't know better?

Don't Handicap one group and don't have the items that "supposedly" handicap the other.
Just have Lego for all, no dolls or action figures.

Boys need a handicap? please don't tell me people actually believe that nonsense.

I thought we've been trying to move away from the pink = girl, blue = boy mentality.
