Black Friday 2015 Retail Musings

Went to Bestbuy, Target and Walmart last night. The ps4 seemed to be the clear winner, but there was still plenty laying around. The Wii U was selling suprising well to

My cousin's girlfriend bought an XB1 for Tomb Raider. I asked her if she really couldn't wait a year and she said no, she couldn't.

I'm kinda floored, I didn't think that was going to work at all. So score one sale for that exclusive deal I guess!

Went to Best Buy this morning at 11AM. I only looked at PS4 games, but I saw no copies of Until Dawn, Dark Souls II, God of War 3, the Final Fantasy games, and I think a few more that escape me. What I did notice though was that there were a ton of copies of Batman Arkham Knight just...there. Looked as if nearly nobody bought a copy. I swear it's almost as if THPS 5 sold more copies at my BB lol. Didn't pay attention to console inventory, but I spotted a decent amount of people carrying PS4 bundles. Didn't spot anybody carrying any other console/handheld.

Also got Guitar Hero live. Kinda surprised by how many were still in stock. About 10 for PS4 and like 20-30 for X1. Guess not too many people wanted GH back lol

A friend of mine went a brought his in anticipation for street fighter v, he's going to be mad if sony does a sfv themed ps4 though

My friend did the same but he took advantage of BB's no restocking fee policy and returned the xbox after he finished

If you need a DS4, make sure to buy the Playstation Now Starter Kit at Best Buy. $40 for a DS4, 1 month of PS Now, and a USB cable. Same price as the DS4 on sale.

Cool thx! Have the controllers been updated with better battery life 🔋 yet? I still have my launch DS4.

Not a fan of this practice. Feels morally wrong.

Today I went to Best Buy for eShop cards and got a $50 and $20 cards. I also got a universal remote. Not much people in the Nintendo section, lots of people in the Sony and Microsoft sections.

At Walmart I was looking for Splatoon for $25, but it was NOWHERE to be found. The only Wii U game at a reduced price was that Adventure Time game. I saw a a couple of guys just getting as many of the XBox One and PS4 games that they could. I just got some cheap Blu-Rays and left. Highly disappointing. :/

Target, last night at around 3:00am:

PS4s (bundles and consoles alone) were wiped out.

XB1s still had a few consoles available.

Didn't even see a place to GET a Wii U. The Nintendo section was straight up tiny in general, actually, and didn't have a place for consoles to be stored. I found this weird. I may just not have been in the right place, but I can't see why they'd have two separate Nintendo sections. That said, what Wii and Wii U games they had were clearing out nicely.

PS4 and XB1 new games were wiped almost entirely out, older games were starting to be wiped out as a result, too.

I personally bought nothing. I'm broke. I went with my girlfriend and her little brother, who both did their Christmas shopping. I don't think we got anything at Target period.

The local games store in the same mall was selling PS4s and Xbox Ones for about 10 dollars more than the bundle prices, but still far under the usual prices.

Went to Walmart twice.
First:
At night PS4 and XBO selling gangbusters.
Wii U sold a few too.
COD,F4,Madden, and Splatoon were selling like crack
Second:
Splatoon restock but people were buying them.
Saw XBOs being sold.
2 Wii Us were sold and they had a bunch reserved or behind the counter(I counted 8 plus 2 at the stand so 10).
Fallout 4 led from what It looked like.

So I switched earlier this year to a different retail corporation. I didn't expect much could be worse than Gamestop. TRU management is better, but the customers are worse. The first retail experience of the day at 6AM was a family of 3 very overweight people. The mother breathed through her mouth as I did the usual routine. Her child, left unattended, decided to reorganize our DVD wall.

They spent over 300 dollars, I'm assuming they were all for their child that was present. Spending that much earned them a free gift card, and a 15 dollar coupon. Coupons were late since the previous two days were blizzard days; we did not have any. I explained this to her, and told her we could mail it to them, or they could return at a later date.

"We want the coupon now" they say. I repeat myself.
"We want the coupon now, we live 20 minutes away!"
I pause, bewildered. We live in a big city. 20 minutes away is actually quite close, doubly so during winter. Retail persona slowly cracking, the store director noticed and promptly reiterates what I said. He points at the shiny badge saying "store director".

They stand there for another 5 minutes, asking random coworkers for their coupon. While I ring through more customers, who were equally puzzled at their behavior. My temper whittling away, a senior associate hands them an empty gift card. Tells them it is their coupon. They sigh audibly, and complain about me not giving them a coupon promptly.

I die a little more inside. Eight years working retail, and this shit still bothers me. This wasn't even the worst thing to happen today, as Black Friday brings out the crazies.

Edit:
Rant aside, WiiU sold out before noon. Lots of Xbone and PS4 consoles remained when I left. Kinda weird. Management, and the Nintendo rep were happy. Management because extended warranties are easily sold on the WiiU thanks to the tablet controller. Nintendo rep because it sold so well. Game deals were shit this year though, only Lego Dimensions, Skylanders, and Disney Infinity sold well.

I think the thing is that PS4 is just Uncharted, which probably isn't a huge system seller, while XB1 had Fallout and TR.

Sony did the same thing last year. They bundled it with something forgettable while MS had Unity.

Not sure why Sony does this.

The retail workers on here say the TR bundle isn't selling well at all. The $349 price probably isn't helping.

My Target was supposedly out of the 299$ with 60$ gift card Gears bundles, but I somehow found one hiding way in the back of the other bundles! Seems like Wii U's were already gone by the time I was there 1 hour after opening. Don't really know how many they had. Were still a few Uncharted bundles left over. But this was only 1 hour after opening. Glad I ended up making it out with that bundle yesterday :D

Waited in line at kohls for one hour. Got a great deal on a TV. Not bad. Still wouldn't do it again but the deal was insane. Basically got it for free

Broke $60k in sales by the time I left, and PS4 was selling Xbox one nearly 2:1. Once we sold out of the Fallout Xbone bundles, demand dwindled. Sold 0 Elite bundles as well.

Edit: sold through three dozen lunar white controllers though!

just got back from Walmart in Mililani, Hawaii(Oahu).

No PS4's in sight. In fact almost nothing left for PS4 period. I wanted to get SW Disney Infinity 3.0 for PS4 but it was gone, plenty of all other versions to be had.

WiiU was well stocked behind the glass. XB1 was full behind the glass. I assume they have more of each in the back.

Also for a frame of reference there is a major Army installation maybe 2 miles from the Walmart so the shoppers here are a good mix of locals and military.

This is a Gamestop I assume?

60k seems like a lot to sell in one day for a single store!

My Target ran out of all the Xbox One, PS4, and WiiU bundles we had. Saw lots of people walking out with them. Had quite a bit of people asking for the Gears bundle.

I ordered some stuff online from BB Wednesday night but I woke up early to hit Walmart today. I got there at 7 am and it was pretty quiet. They had the games set up on cardboard displays in the garden center. There were like 3 people in there which was nice lol. I found drive club and dishonored and ps+ cards but I wanted lbp3 and dying light too. So I went over to electronics and sure enough, there was dying light in a shopping cart full of movies and games. I walked over to the glass and there was the last copy of lbp3 woot!

As far as the console battle, no idea. No consoles were being sold this morning I must have been there too early. The cashier said the next big wave of people was coming later so I didn't hesitate to leave lol.

yeah that 60$ gift card with the already 299$ Gears bundle was a pretty big kicker. I like that whole gift card thing, they even gave me a 15$ gift card with purchase of Forza 6, and a 15$ GC with purchase of 30$ Sunset Overdrive, making SO basically 15$

Wait so the senior associate gave them an empty coupon? He/she realizes they'll be back right?

Doesn't really matter who sells the most at this point. That everyone seems by most accounts to be selling at a healthy clip is kind of a relief.

When you are dealing with three people filling the store in the busiest day of the year and being belligerent, I imagine that it's best to send them away and simply deal with it another, emptier day.

Maybe they won't. They live 20 minutes away after all.

Yep! Sales sound healthy all around.
Yeah, but 20 minutes isn't much if you're a pissed off customer who didn't get their money.

I guess you're right.

So judging by most accounts all 3 consoles sold well(ps4 and xbo as expected, wii u actually selling on pace with the others surprised me though).

The Wii U would only be selling on pace if there was equivalent stock of Wii U's compared to PS4 and XB1. I highly doubt Nintendo stuffed channels enough for that, but at this point it looks like they might actually high regret not doing so.

LOl came home to a bunch of emails from new Tomb Raider fans in our Lan group. Seems like almost no one is waiting for Christmas. Well actually out of 22 no one waited I am sure someone somewhere did lol

It was VERY tame in Best Buy and Target. Uncle and I were looking for a laptop for my Aunt. We struck out. I bought 3 games from Best Buy online and they just got shipped out today.

WiiU was selling like gangbusters at my Wal-Mart, I was afraid I wasn't gonna get one, lol. Saw a lot of Xbox One's in carts, not many PS4's going around. The game section though was completely blew out, one side of the display was completely empty like 30 minutes into the sale.

Walmart, Target, and Best Buy seemed dead as fuck. No pushing, no rudeness, no nothing. The mall on the other hand was a nuthouse, especially Bath and Body Works, Belks, and some other places. Damn.

Wut?

I ventured out to try my luck at finding Until Dawn and it was sold out everywhere. On the consoles front I saw lots of Xbox Ones in people's hands followed by some UC bundles and even a couple Wii U bundles which I was shocked about.

X1 seemed to be selling really well though.

I went to Target, Best Buy, and Walmart and the PS4same were gone. The only Xbox One bundle left were the overpriced Halo 5 ones.

I ended going to a Microsoft Store to get an Xbox One bundle. I ended up getting the 1TB Tomb Raider Bundle for $350. I got a $60 gift card with it that I wasn't expecting. The Microsoft Store had a lot consoles.

Spent most of the day trying to snag vinyl records for the Black Friday Record store sale, but I was able to head over to Walmart for a bit; Wasn't able to find GTAV for PS4, but I did get Dishonored for PS4 for $15.

Posting from Canada! Went to a bunch of different stores (superstore, walmart, bestbuy, toysrus, Microsoft store) to get presents. It wasn't very busy when I went, apparently I missed the morning rush and also the late shoppers. I saw about three people buying xb1s and someone with a wiiu and that was about it lol.

Ps4 is sold out online here at Walmart though which is bat shit crazy.

In conclusion there is absolutely zero conclusions you can draw from my experience out there.
