Pretty much. He killed because he realized the stakes were high, not because he actually got any pleasure out of killing. Gohan has always tried to avoid fights/hurting people until he has no other choice.

Even then he was basically givin' up halfway through that beam struggle with Cell.

The only reason Gohan had trouble against Cell in the Kamehameha clash was because he was worried about what damage he would do to the Earth.

Great thing about the manga is its breakneck pace. The clash laste a total of 6 pages, and Gohan says he's doing his "best" for one panel and Goku tells him that's bullshit the next.

What if this is only setting up a story where a big bad comes to earth while the main fighters are away?

"Uh-oh, looks like Gohan, Goten and Trunks have to fight"

So... is Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan stronger than Super Saiyan God?

Prolly a silly question, but.
Yes.

And he had just finished saving Vegeta at the expense of one of his arms & a lot of his strength.

Did not look like it mattered in the manga. It was just them clashing Ki.

but they can direct their ki blasts

On the page that Piccolo points out that Gohan's Kamehameha is getting pushed back, the first panel is of a city getting wrecked because of the clash. The clash was affecting the entire planet.

Here's a fully sick AMV for all the Gohan fans.

I'm sorry I couldn't help it. There's so many of these when you search for DBZ clips.

Now you're just reaching and/or trolling.

I explicitly remember the line "But Dad, I can't do it, I don't have enough energy left" and Goku was totally heaven-slapped him good for it.

This is basically the plot for the 2nd and 3rd Broly movies.

Seriously just what the fuck was it with DBZ fans and Linkin Park In the End?

someone should do a scientific study on that.

Everyone needs to read the manga. The anime is great, but it adds a lot of fluff and then you have to worry about which version of the english dub you watch because depending on which it is, that can alter some scenes.

there was a third Broly movie?

It's garbage
literally
.

chill man, it doesn't even matter

Bio-Broly.

Yep, Bio Broly. It really didn't need to exist, lol.

wait, what the hell was the second Broly movie then?
i'm so lost. i remember the first one with all the z-fighters and i remember bio-broly, but i don't remember the other

I really need to get around to it. I've been buying & reading the full color books digitally but they take forever to come out.

The first Broly movie is the only good one.

All the "return of *villain*" movies are bad.

OG Broly with the GOAT Saiyan design.

It should be remembered if we're talking about the original english dub, it was inaccurate in LOTS of places. Kai and the manga would be better references.

All of the og movies were pretty bad tbh. Most of them take stuff that already happened in the mainline series and they all have really shit second acts that make them a slog to get through.

At least the pre ssj ones have decent fights.

Only Cooler and Broly got those sequels, which they made because of just how popular they were. Meta-Cooler movie was just awful in animation and inconsistencies. while Broly: Second Coming was somewhat decent (except for it having that stupid "which SSJ form is Gohan using" argument). Bio Broly had absolutely no reason for existing.

The Android 13 movie just seemed like a "let's make something that's like Broly but is an Android also 13 is an unlucky evil number ooooo".

Androids 13, 14, and 15 all had cool designs, and that movie had Future Trunks in it, so it was pretty good IMO.

The original dub was absolutely terrible, but it did two things better than the original Japanese script:

-Gave Goku a more heroic personality (YMMV on this one but I liked it - a mix of hick Goku and hero Goku would be the perfect Goku)
-Made Vegeta a deeper character by having him make frequent reference to being the prince of all Saiyans and part of a lost warrior race, which he doesn't care about at all in the original

It was also nice how adult Gohan didn't have Goku's voice. Eric Vale made a good Trunks, too.

Also on the subject of the dub, Android 19 had such a bad voice that it was hilariously terrible. Even as a 12 year old I found it annoying as hell. Hated what they did to 16 as well.

I'll defend World's Strongest and Tree of Might till the day I die. Only pre BOG movies that you should even care about (well maybe Wraith of the Dragon too...)

It's kinda funny how after keeping popular characters like Vegeta and 18, Toriyama pretty much went 'No more Future Trunks.' after the Cell saga.

Meanwhile, all the spinoffs do what they can to include him and even GT fast-forwarded Trunks to the same age and just had him have the same personality despite the actual personality differences between original and future Trunks.

World's Strongest is so good

-Roshi fighting and being important and calling for him Goku and Krillin to do a Kamehameha
-Game of Death-esque tower climbing
-Random insertion of Dragon Ball music
-Piccolo and Goku fight
-Cool ass fights in general

I think it was the first Dragon Ball thing I understood (watched some vhs with GT on it but I don't think there were english subs on it). My oldest nostalgia of dragonball would probably be with the ocean dub version of this film

My biggest gripe with the Kai dub are the replacement VAs for Frieza, young Gohan, Bulma, 18... It's just not the same and in some cases not good. 18 in particular became awful.

I'll be the first to defend Rita Repulsa Frieza, but his Kai voice is pretty much the only recasting I think worked out.

Young Gohan is a tragedy though, goddamn.

I'll give dead zone and world's strongest props only for being the earliest and having good fights but the rest devolve into "lame villain who has something in common with a mainline villain has a bunch of lamer gimmick side minions with terrible designs."

Then the movies devolve even further into "let's watch our heroes fight against dumb roid monkeys and forget they can turn super saiyan for the first few minutes for some fake tension."

"Also let's make our very last villains have emotion weaknesses."

Young Gohan was one of the more memorable voices of the OG dub. I can even hear him saying things like "My dad will come and save us" or "I don't want to fight you" in my head when I think about it. Haven't heard Kai's version - it's a shame they replaced his VA.

I think one of the weirdest things about the dub was the decision to turn Piccolo and Vegeta into snarling grumps, when they sounded like pretty cool customers in the original. They took so many liberties with it. Ah, 90's anime. Dub Vegeta is pretty iconic at this point though. Ironically they nailed Raditz's voice despite him only being in like, four episodes.

The Remastered dub included with the Dragon Box release is probably my favorite even if it's based on the altered script.

I honestly prefer the character themes we got in Kai, but we all know what happened there.
Kenji Yamamoto is the best sound artist the series has ever had.
