Xenoblade X Eurogamer Preview: Maybe 2015's Most Impressive Open World

Ive heard opinions all over the place with this, it most def has a story and peole who have done impressions are saying that there is one and that at a certain point in the game is when it gets really engaging, it might not be super linear but a story is there, iits just that they made the world more compliment it, you wont find things out in the story in the affinity quests for instance, I also heard that the the story is more character driven rather than plot driven because of the focus on affinity quests. The game wants you to love its characters.

Yeah, that's basically what I've heard. Not that there isn't a story, but if you go in expecting a narrative like Xenoblade, Xenogears, or Xenosaga, you're gonna have a bad time, because it's not on that level at all, and is much more world and character focused.

I'm playing Monster Hunter for Wii U to prepare for this.

I know they aren't all that alike but they both require large investments of time and I feel like destroying my brain.

The Quick Look did a fine job of unselling me on this game, I really wanted it to be awesome though. COUPLE QUESTIONS; is there a proper feature length story? It seemed like all the quests were very MMO-esque like go to the lake and kill these turtles and collect their turtle faces etc Is it like FFXII where you can do all those side things but there still is a compelling story to follow? And then the battle system just seemed like a bunch of hectic crazy nonsense, does it actually feel good and is there any strategy to it?

The music in the town though, best and worst thing about the game so far.

Battles are very positional based, taking control of your ground important. You can focus attacks on front, mid, back, but in a skell you can focus on front (high, mid, low), mid (high, mid, low) and back (high, mid, low). Some attacks get buffs depending on your position like increased damage, bleed or poison. There are no potions or healing items either, so monitoring your HP, calling out to friends and healing buffs are required.

Strategy and good perks are important to think about. It was similar in the first Xenoblade, but this one looks to improve on it in a lot of ways.

Also, adjust teams too, like who you want on agro, buffs, attacker, whatever.

between the quick look and ninjablade's posts I'm wondering if it's time to get off this train

I gotta understand why you're taking Ninjablade so seriously when all he's ever done is constantly try to talk bad about the game at nearly every turn. Not to mention he made a big fool of himself in the Fast Racing Neo thread about something he didn't seem to have a full grasp on, that several tech savvy people had to come in and even make a simple graph to give a basic understanding of the things going on in that game.

I never said anything bad about the game except that the graphics weren't impressive and gave valid reasons why.

In the neo fast racing thread I showed the poster of the graph that it didn't make sense, he said he would look into to it when the game releases and we made are peace, yeah I pm him.

I am slightly worried about having party members fighting with Skells just because I don't want them breaking them. Are your party members smart enough to abandon it if they're getting low on HP?

Yeah, and I get that. I think a lot of people get that cause you seem to do the same thing in every thread. It has become predictable to some. There's more to things than always pointing out the negative. I think, in a year of being part of GAF, I don't think I've really seen you speak positively of something on a Nintendo system. I may have missed some to be sure though since I don't often visit OTs and you might have something in those.

Yeah, the graphics may not be on par with many other games, but I still see a whole bunch of positive things in the images and love talking about that. The battle system looks so much more improved and I can't wait to try it, the mechs look so much fun to ride around in and that GameXplain video got me excited for flying super high and wanting to just drop and see what happens. There's a ton of cool things to talk about and I rarely see you present for those conversations.

This is a good question.

My approach to the party members with the Skells is. Here Lin, Elma, and everyone else this is your Skells and as soon as you break it you're going to fucking walk!

I think there might be a command to tell them to get out and get in IIRC from when I watched a bunch of JP streams. I would like some clarification too.

You can tell them to get out but I wonder if it does indeed work while in combat. Good question, we'll know soon enough I guess.

To everyone who's downloaded the data packs, does it show up as 10 gigs in the Wii U data management screen?

Just wondering since I thought it was supposed to be 15 gigs that we had to download.

I don't know the specifics of the data packs since I'm doing full digital, but something you should keep in mind about the numbers reported by Wii U is that the eShop app typically reports space needed to install, the Download Manager typically reports the amount of data needed to be downloaded, and the Data Management menu typically reports the space actually used on disk. There are often significant differences between these 3 numbers.

The problem isn't that he never says anything positive about Nintendo. The problem is he has some sort of life goal to prove to people who think Nintendo games look impressive that they're actually wrong. He somehow can't tolerate the idea that people actually think these games look good, so he has to come into threads to show you how wrong you are.

I don't really care if he doesn't find the graphics impressive. That's his opinion, he has valid reasons, and he's entitled to it. The problem comes in when he goes into threads about games he clearly has no interest in just to push his opinion on others.

This is one of two games I'm asking for Christmas, the other being Kirby and the Rainbow Curse.

I like what I'm seeing in X, but it looks overwhelming to the point of feeling like work. It looks like a game I would've relished as a kid with lots of free time, but these days I gravitate more toward streamlined action experiences like Bloodborne and Smash Bros. (Bloodborne has its share of systems, but nothing nearly as complex as X)

But perhaps the right mentality to take with X is to simply enjoy it and not worry about "beating" it. Like if I go in and just accept that it might go unfinished for the foreseeable future, and if I just enjoy the act of exploration, the amazing sights, etc, it could be a worthwhile experience.

This game will totally get shafted in GAF's GOTY proceedings, because few will make meaningful progress in the time before polls close. But I can tell from afar that if nothing else, this game transports you to an amazing place full of discovery and a sense of awe. It's a game I'm happy exists.

Revisionist history will not get you very far, buddy. Whether the graph was right or not, you were completely out of your depth in that FAST Racing Neo thread. Not a single one of your arguments were valid, other than the fact that you would prefer if the craft's shadows reacted to the position of the sun. You were trolling, plain and simple.

As far as your complaints in this thread, this has more to do with what you find technically impressive, and I really couldn't give two shits about your graphical standards. But rest assured, if you start spreading misinformation about this game's graphics, there will be no shortage of fact correction in store for you.

Having said that, if you don't like the game's graphics, that's fine. Just don't be surprised when you're not lauded, and instead derided, for your ridiculous opinion, considering the actual technical competency of this game.

Wow, fuck me in particular.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv_dn3IdjtU

So these are all the hair styles tied to all their specific faces. This is very disappointing if I'm being honest. None of the young men heads have a curly/braided/natural hair option.
https://youtu.be/vv_dn3IdjtU?t=270

I'd be fine with this hair option but it's tied to that face which I dont like very much and looks kind of old. All the young men options only come with straight hair, which is kind of sad since I like to make something at least close to myself when given the option. I dont know why hair is tied to specific faces.

Now I'm debating on whether making a waifu character or just dealing with the hair (and pretending 1:45 is curly)

None of the shit you say is valid, you get stuff wrong majority of the time.
You looked like exactly those people who hears the name of a graphical effect and a vague definition of what they do and think you know your shit, but you don't, as we've proven time and time again. Nobody takes you seriously, nobody.

They'll only get out if you tell them to, but allies have guaranteed perfects on all prompts, so it won't use up any insurance things if it gets destroyed while they're in one. Then you just have to go back to the barracks and into the garage menu to have it restored. If the one they're piloting doesn't have any insurances left, though, you can't get it repaired for free.

Does anyone know a YouTuber that plays the disc version without data packs?

I'm interested in gameplay videos (Japanese or English version) to see loading/streaming times.

The GameXplain comparison only compares disc+data packs VS digital.

I don't have enough room even for just the Basic Pack, but also I wasn't bothered at all by the pop-in in Xenoblade Chronicles Wii, so maybe disc only is just fine.

6 days left until neon genesis evangelion happens and everything becomes orange juice.

I haven't even thought about what to name my character. I'm going with a girl so Malus doesn't seem quite right.

Sorry if this has been answered before. Are the Datapacks for Download only available for the Digital Downloaded version of the game or does the retail disc benefit as well?

They're specifically for the retail version. The digital version has them included automatically.

Datapacks for the digital version? Why would you want all those duplicate files?

Ahh that is good news. I will probably be getting the disc version, so I may as well get the packs downloaded in preparation!

Thanks!

I kinda guessed it was to reduce the download size of the game but you could opt-in to download for faster loads etc? Just me being dumb. :D

Huh? GX's comparison was disc no data packs vs disc with data packs

The Data Packs are exclusively for the physical version to compensate for the slower speed of reading from a disc rather than from internal/external memory. They do not impact the digital version at all and are entirely extraneous to it.

EDIT: Waaaaay beaten.

Well, the data packs exist because reading data from the disc takes longer than getting them from a hard drive. The data packs allow you to install some of the data to your hard drive. It's the same data that's on the disc, it's just faster to load now. With the digital version, the whole game is on your hard drive, so you don't need to worry about getting around the disc read time limitations.

Downloading the data packs has been a laboured process. Twice I tried to download them all, the Wii u times out because of no activity, but instead of downloading in standby, it fails because it doesn't power the USB HD I guess? So it tells me it corrupted, prompts me to delete, I retry, fails again.

This time I connect my pro controller and watch it download each one seperatly. But what doesn't make sense is that the estimated data downloads don't add up. I'm currently downloading the final 2 (smallest) packs together and they show up on the list as 7.5 GB when it should only be around 4.

They don't show up in the menu for the HD in systems settings so I have no way of knowing if this stuff will be ready to work on day 1.

Can anyone confirm if there is a way to check they are successfully installed in the main menu of the game?

Tried This ?

Not sure that works when Wiiu is in sleep mode itself though.

I've actually played for 10 hours now and I'm also wondering about this. All of the quests and chapters feel very MMO and I'm wondering if the story kicks into high gear at some point soon.

10 hours? Why you've barely started. I think by 10 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles I was about ready to leave Colony 9.

Think of it like a zip file - it's prolly counting the space needed to download and unpack (before installing and deleting the download), not just the download itself.

That pops up if you die to a boss several times, it causes the level of the boss to drop, dunno how it effects drops though (I doubt it does).

(I wonder if that's usable in speedruns or if it would be better just to mow right through them)
Depends on how far you have to walk to re-fight the boss but I don't think this game is going to be seriously run any time soon. Especially if you need Skells to beat the game as lower difficulty kills won't necessarily bring in the money.

To go off-topic, Xenoblade Chronicles speedruns are only viable (well as viable as 6 hour runs are*) due to all the level up exploits the game has. Prior to the get to level 50 near start of game glitch being found (which saves a couple of hours on its own) kicking enemies off cliffs (which was well known before EU release) and despawning enemies (instantly killing them) to quickly level was absolutely necessary (even then level grinding segments were a long part of the run).

*-Note: I think the Wii U "VC" saves a noticeable amount of time due to loading times being quicker.

I like how your character subtly fades in when you jump so you have an idea of where you're landing. It'll definitely be good for screenshots.
With how the Wii U is slightly better for uploading screenshots (can be done via web browser rather than slow miiverse) I hope more people try to stick together some panoramic views like these awesome MM3D ones.

US reviewers l(like GameXplain) only have discs (and as pointed out) while EU reviewers only have digital.

Is there anything you can do to make space for the basic pack? 10 seconds being lost per fast travel is going to add up. If you do 360 fast travels that is an hour wasted on loading.

From what I've gathered of the Japanese version, aside from you not being very far into the main story at this point, much of the story will be fleshed out by side quests. The game's story is primarily focused on character development instead of a long plot, so to get the most out of it, you'll need to do all the affinity quests, as they handle most of the world building and character development, and they have their own cutscenes and voice acting. The normal quests are useful as well for world building, and help to flesh out the overall theme of the story.

That isn't to say that the main story doesn't become more engaging over time, because from what I can tell, it does, but the overall theme of this game's story is 'human civilization working together for the survival of our species', which comes across much better by building closer relationships with various characters than trying to convey that through the main plot.

So basically what it comes down to is, if you're really interested in the story aspect of the game, you're going to need to do the sidequests, and of course, do more story missions.

I'm so hyped about this game that I just bought a bigger TV to make the HUD easier to read 0_0

Less than a week now, guys! I became a father last month and have little free time, but that's fine: Xeno X will be my 2016 game. I'll be playing it veeeeery sloooowly, no need to rush, no worries about beating it. I just want to enjoy it and live in Mira for as long as I can until I eventually reach the end of the game.

I know people have been a bit down on it for being too MMOey

I hate playing online, but I love soloing MMOs! They're so expansive and fun to explore, and I love all those silly fetch quests most people seem to hate. If Xenoblade X is anything like this, I'll be in paradise for months.

That's not too bad then. Can you abandon a Skell if you're flying or do have you to be at ground level?

Also, does anyone know what happens when you're in a 32 player squad mission and you go into a story chapter where you might be locked into a certain area?

Guess this thread's hype got me or something, cause I just got a Wii U for some reason

Does the game have any HDD space requirements if I get the retail disc version? The console's the 8GB basic one, soo..

e: nvm, got a sata-usb thingamajig and an extra 256gb ssd, if this works I'm probably set

Hmm...an anagram.

Diss Em Song

Diss Gnomes

Dog Mess Sin?

End Smog Sis!

You fool! There will be another layer of dust on it by the time the game comes out. Such wasted effort.

Lol. I was so excited but my excitement will lead to my doom

I'm really worried about all this MMO talk since that's not at all what I want. I just want an engaging story, beautiful environments to explore and great charachters. I don't want to grind or do lots of filler quests
