We go a little Hollywood this week as PC Gamer founder turned motion picture writer Gary Whitta joins us to talk about his career transition. Along the way we learn a little bit about the history of Gears of War, Duke Nukem Forever, and the original World of Warcraft movie script. We round out the show with info on Link's latest portable adventure, Gravity Crash on the PSN, and two special guests join in for some stories from a galaxy far, far away.

Someone decided Friday afternoon would be the perfect to mess with our podcast servers. They're down for the time being, but I'll update as soon as they're back up. Sorry guys.

Repeatingly pressing the refresh button on the itunes podcast list.

I`m pretty sure that will make it come faster.

Edit: It worked! WOOO

Sweet, proper ID3 tags are much appreciated! :D

Hey Big Fun, sorry I've been a little LTTP on your new 'cast, but as I traveled this week I caught up with the first three episodes.

Love it love it love it!

Love the guests. Love the format. Love the fact that you're not trying to replicate the old show (even though that would've probably worked out just fine).

Well done, sir. Well done. Keep it up!

yay for correct ID3 tags, haha

thanks david, will listen as I mow the lawn later

Haha, that's exactly when I listen.

I've only just finished the Jeff Green episode :S

Probably completely off topic in here - but I remember in that episode they were talking about why publishers don't do more of their own news stories or whatever - I highly recommend you check out Iwata Asks. Probably the most insightful thing I've ever seen from a publisher/dev, unless you go to GDC or something. Funny, coming from Nintendo.

Just started listening -- I didn't know Gary Whitta was British! He doesn't look it.

Only about 20-30 minutes in, so I'm hoping to hear what happened with World of Warcraft and Akira.

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

FFS WTF????

Gary Whitta is just like John Davison of a couple of years back, saying that PC gaming is a super niche market, inhabited only by the super hardcore that have a physics degree and like RTS's.

This (at this time) is about as far from the truth as it has ever been in the span of PC gaming.

Pretty much every single major release that isn't a platform exclusive has come out on PC. Whilst there has been a few games that have not had great PC ports for the most part they have been done well and in most cases have exceeded the quality of the original console versions. Pretty much every major release (including a lot of PC exclusives) have had native Xbox 360 pad support. We have friend lists with Steam, GFWL, vent or teamspeak, we have custom soundtracks (cos we can play what the fuck we want in windows), we have in-built web browsers at a click of a button. I find the whole experience far and beyond what I have ever experienced on console. Compound that with next to zero load times and not having to change discs and for me PC gaming becomes a glimpse into the future of console gaming.

Not to mention the fact that every major publisher has ramped up PC support in recent times.

No PC master race bullshit from me though, I fully understand the attraction of a console, I just hate people who dismiss the PC platform because they find it difficult to push a card shaped thing into a card shaped slot. The guys obviously intelligent and a fellow Brit but it isn't that hard to PC game...

Sorry for the rant. Ignorant anti PC bullshit irks me.

Edit: I retract this post, it reads like a post from a gamefaqs PC fanboy.

Gary Whitta was the editor in chief of PC Gamer magazine in the US and UK...to suggest he's coming from an "ignorant" place on any level is ludicrous.

I know of Gary Whitta and have the upmost of respect for him but...

"doesn't look like a particulary interesting landscape"
Subjective I know but at this time I don't think PC gaming has been as strong in the past as it is now. With the downloadable content that is available, episodic gaming and the exclusives from blizzard and Valve over the coming months/years. As well as arguably superior ports of most of the multiplatform games.

"spending a couple of thousand dollars on a new rig"
You really don't need to spend close to that figure to play any of the PC gaming exclusives. The longer console cycle means that you need a fairly modest rig to play all of the current PC games. A couple of thousand dollars would be overkill.

I fully understand his points and i realise he wasn't having a dig at PC gaming, if anything he was bolstering it (in his own way) I just don't think he sees what is currently happening with the PC market. Year upon year publisher support is growing and they are throwing more resources into the PC gaming market. Compound that with the exponentially growing Steam platform; I really don't see PC gaming going back into the hardcore flight sim box that Gary is forseeing.

I haven't really noticed much of a change in the PC market over the years aside from Steam becoming dominant. For every decent console port, there's still a crap ton of really awful ones, and a large reason a lot of them turn out well, and have default 360 controller support built in... is because it seems there's a very short turn around for making a PC port from a game where lead development is on the 360.

Also, price is still a large sticking point, just not to those who are in the know. I didn't spend much at all on my PC, but if your average Joe walks into a Best Buy and looks at top of the line rigs in comparison to a PS3 or 360, they very likely going to be swayed towards the consoles. That's less a problem for PC gaming as a whole, and more a problem for the companies that sell these rigs, but it still has that negative connotation going against it.

Also, there is one thing PC gaming hasn't had for years that consoles do have... sales figures.

Fair enough...I consider myself a member of the GWDF (Gary Whitta Defense Force).

I do find it hard to argue with his point that there aren't many PC games coming in 2010 that I'm hyped about, while there is a good number of games that I am looking forward to on consoles. (That said, many of my favourite gaming experiences of the last year came on the PC and came "out of nowhere" - Trine, Plants vs Zombies etc... - , so early hype doesn't always mean much.)

I was a huge fan of the Game Theory podcast, and felt the need to jump to Gary's defense, but your points are well taken.

I agree with most of those points but I do think there has been a bigger push from publishers to make a PC version where as in the past they wouldn't of bothered.

It seems like a lot of the original PC developers have now gone multi platform, so whilst PC gamers will still get the definitive version (for most cases) the over all experience may be more "watered-down" or "consolified". On the flips side of that there is a lot of developers/publishers who were just console-centric (capcom comes to mind) that had little to no PC support, who have now opened up new studios just to make the PC versions a more fulfilling experience for the PC gamer.

FUCK YEAH!

Wow, you're very well spoken. I wish I had half the command of the spoken word that you do. Now go on the Bombcast if you haven't already.

It's funny that the guest industry panelist is the person most candid about criticizing people and companies in the industry.

Also, David, you're taking very cliched questions from the fans. Whose body would you step in? Who gives a shit.

Good job all around though.
