love Gary Whitta , great podcast david.

totally agree with gary on the whole thing about peiople who skip cutscenes .. i mean WTf ..do these people FF through movies to the action bits as well?

pointless .. you loose all frame of reference of what your doing. people who do that must have ADD or something.
In very rare circumstances I will skip the cut scenes. Klonoa for the Wii is really fun but I never would have stuck with it if I wasn't able to skip them. Terrible voice work aimed at three year olds.

Again with this theme music. I love your podcast, but damn that DEW DEW DEWWWWWWW guitar. And then the damn break "quiet version" with acoustic guitar. It's like some Michael Bay-after the carnage character introspection gaze money shot music.

Some games really don't need cutscenes. Games where frame of reference is irrelevant. Valid examples are Skate, DTM Race Driver, THPS, .. Stuff like that.

Other games have a horrid story, but are somewhat enjoyable games anyway. Why bother watching the cutscenes?

When you ask whether some people FF through movies to the action bits, yes they do - when it's porn. Same deal.

It's like some TV series theme.

Whitta was great, despite the fact I completely disagree with his views on PC gaming at the moment.

I don't think it's ever been easier or cheaper to be a PC gamer with a good machine.

Yeah, Whitta seems to be out of touch.

If you are referring to the Phantomile language as well as the English language, you are the worst person in the world (no hyperbole!). Klonoa 2's Phantomilian voice acting, for instance, sold me on Namco-Bandai's modern approach. I've withstood hours of Tales voice acting based on it.

I usually watch cutscenes, but MGS4 was a rare exception, I just couldn't stand one more minute of those fucking cutscenes.

Also, I don't begrudge people that skip cutscenes. Comparing it to skipping to the action in a movie doesn't work, because games aren't movies. Half the time whatever narrative I take away from a game doesn't involve the story at all, but more how I handled one of the set piece moments. Often, any time control is taken away from me, I get highly agitated and just want to be doing something again. Only in rare circumstances do I actually enjoy cutscenes. Uncharted being the prime example.

The WhittaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAaaaaaaaaaa

Great podcast guys. Having one guest per week and having that person be the focus of the podcast for a set amount of time works well.

Totally awesome episode, and Gary Whitta is also awesome. Sorry, nothing else to contribute except this:

For some reason, whenever the show's theme song kicks in, I instantly visualize some TV show opening that shows 1UP Yours and Luke and Shane leaving, and Listen UP and John leaves as Garnett slowly fades away. Then 4 Guys 1UP explodes into the screen when the song really kicks in, and that week's cast do their dramatic/ironic turns towards the camera as their names fade in.

Got done listening last night. Was nice to hear about some other forms of media besides video games during the show. The TRS usually fills my quotient of that for the week, but it was nice to hear it on the podcast too. I bet they'd love to have him as a guest over there, since they spend time every episode on books and movies. Someone needs to make this happen.

Great podcast! The Mario chat kinda/sorta warmed my heart because it sounds exactly like my experience with it. Also, it definitely creates temporary riffs between loved ones (my GF got legitimately mad at me for getting upset at her liberal bubbling :lol). Still, GOTY.

I'd like to mention that I think context should be had within gameplay as opposed to cut-scenes. I love me some pre-rendered stuff, but I think more clever and better ways in game storytelling can be found in seamlessness. Maybe they're only starting to come about but I think in the end, cut-scenes will/should become more scarce.

Also, excuse my ignorance but I had no idea Gary was from the UK. Now all his posts I read will change their tone :lol

Thanks :) Would be happy to do the Bombcast, they just need to invite me :D

You should go On the Page with Pilar Alessandra if possible. Next to the Creative Screenwriting Mag podcast, it's easily the best and I think you'd be a great guest.
