Dragons Dogma PC version early hands-on video

Dammit, they didn't upgrade the character shadows :/ still just casts a super low poly representation of the naked body, with no clothing shadows at all...hopefully this can be modded somehow.

Other than that, damn this looks sexy. Triple dip incoming.

Ugh, FXAA :(

Looks so different running at 60 frames, this is gonna be great.

Too bad they didn't have footage of one leaving Gran Soren. The hillside in the distance was the most noticeable & frequent locale for pop-in I could recall.

EDIT: Just saw the other video where it portrays that very spot. It does seem to pop-in elements all at once (rather than procedurally), and from a greater distance.

EDIT 2: Thanks, lol.

Looks amazing at 60 fps, and i'm glad we can finally turn off pawn voices! I'm wondering though (and this is a niggling complaint i know) if they've finally made invisibility/stealth actually do what they're supposed to do? I'm sure since this is skill related it's not a main focus. Assassin was my favorite class to play, but it always bugged me that you weren't actually invisible when you used these skills :/

Didn't even remember there was stealth in this. Was it reduced threat or something? Assassins were beasts anyway so doubt it changed.

Only class that was really bad to play was Mage. The support stuff is just so not interesting and your pawns are dumb as hell so you really kinda want to be doing some damage, so Sorcerer is just way better and more fun. Mage's more or less a pure pawn class. Kinda wish they gave them some unique interesting spells compared to Sorcerer.

Heh.

Looks like LOD distances are massively improved, and they also added some new effects. Neat.

Also, some of the comparisons make it very clear that texture resolution was actually upgraded (on top of the inherent advantage of higher rendering resolution).

I've never played the game, but everyone always trashes on the warrior.

The Warrior after DA is a lot better but he still has a lot of trouble dealing with air enemies. He makes up for it with pure goddamn strength and the ability to oneshot things with the right setups.

Na warriors are just frustrating to play cause unlike other classes, you only get 3skill slots(instead of 6), and there's so many cool skills. Kinda hope someone will mod that but it's potentially hard to change since it's like core mechanics and what not.

But other than this limitation which means you have to use more or less only the very best skills, the class was a lot of fun, and fairly strong.

Oh well there was another issue if you want to cheese stuff, as one of the basic attack moves(iirc neutral jump attack) had an animation way faster than everything else so you can just spam that over and over for top damage, but that's kinda on people using that instead of having fun I'd say.

No, the worst thing was following up the best coop action game of the past console generation with a bland single-player third person shooter.

Honestly I didn't care for either direction Lost Planet went after 2. LP3 has some interesting story ideas and good atmosphere, but mechanically it's several dozen steps backwards. EX Troopers is too out there visually and tonally, plus I don't like the idea of breaking the game up into several hundred missions. It became too much like Monster Hunter.

What was great about LP2 was that its campaign had a ton of variety, but there was also a cohesive element to everything. It was through a tight combination of equipment and allies that you're able to adapt to all of the unique situations. Couple that with the excellent sense of weight, the powerful weapons, and the satisfaction that came from every interaction, no matter how minor. It really felt like Capcom's expertise at cooperative beatemups being displayed in a 3rd person shooter.

Still, I guess it worked out that there wasn't a "true" LP3, because we did get Dragon's Dogma. Between vanilla and the expansion I put well over 100 hours into DD, and I suspect I'll put in just as many, if not more, into the PC version.

Fast travel from the get go is boring and takes away the exploration element from its world. You'd also miss out on the game's day/night cycle playing an important and unique role in the game.

So you let people fast travel after you have visited a location. It isn't that hard of a concept and the day/night cycle argument doesn't add anything at all. You just always rest and set out in the morning unless you specifically want night time.

Proper fast travel and the ability to keep running would fix a lot of the problems with the game. That would only leave the inventory, the pawn system and voices, most of the quests, the balance and the story to go.

Cool spells though.

No offense intended but it really sounds like you should play a different game altogether. When you want to change most aspects of a game that's kind of an indicator it's not a good match.

Have you played Dark Arisen? You get TPs to both towns so those are not needed, you get a crystal in the forest, in the shadowfort, in the bluemoon thing(that's the original one), in the everfall the first time you visit(so you get to place that one wherever else you want very early on) and in that cave thing past all the bandit forts, as well as in the guy living in those plains which is another you get to place wherever for later parts of the game. With all these stones, you can cover all the map major landmarks.

I don't exactly know what else you'd need other than being able to click on every cave, lake, rock or whatever to instantly teleport there, which is fairly terrible for immersion. Skyrim had that and imo it was easily one of the worst features.

60 frames Dragon's Dogma.

Walk with me LAWD!!

Do we think this is coming to PS4/XB1?

Dragon's Dogma the only game that makes Archery look fun.

I tended towards archery in my playthroughs. It's really fun and feels good. IMO the best bow and arrow combat ever conceived in video game form to date.

Another thought to anyone who hasn't played Dragon's Dogma -- The game has a very tactile feel. There's a grab button that enables you to climb or pick things up, ranging from objects to people to animals. If you see it you can either climb on it or pick it up, generally. It's such a wonderful game.

The only thing that bugs me about dragons dogma is how bland the art style is.

It's even more apparent with a higher resolution and framerate. although the game was developed in Japan, it's clear they were aiming for the western rpg audience : the game looks exactly like thousands of shitty fantasy wrpgs

They need to change the art style if they ever bother to make a sequel
WRPGs are not generally bland looking just like JRPGs don't all have animu.

Another game, another Japanese dev failing to offer a resolution above 1080p.

When will this ridiculous trend end.

Honestly, at this point I'm just curious why so many Japanese devs refuse to offer a resolution above 1080p.

Edit: Thankfully I was wrong here.

I hope someone mods horses into the game or at least lets us ride those hairy cows.

So, what class is good to start as, if someone wants to experience the highs of the combat system? Is there a jack of all trades, and would it be the one to go for?

I'd suggest Strider (rogue) class. Mix of close & long-range combat.

It was confirmed that it could go higher than 1080p.

Would love to play this again
I quit PC gaming long time ago, does anyone think this PC port might makes it's way to the X1/PS4?

This is a sneaky post.

It's certainly possible that there will be a port to modern consoles. If anyone knows for sure, they're not talking.

Did you mean to post this in the Dragon's Quest thread? Almost every MT Framework game that I'm aware of supports resolutions above 1080.

I spent a LOT of time playing on ps3 but never beat it. This in my opinion is one of the coolest action games to come out in a really long time however the performance on consoles was terrible and the letterboxing was a joke. I'm super excited to have the opportunity to play this awesome game at its full capacity. I hope the developers are proud that their game isn't running like trash anymore and can be played in its full glory.

That definitely didn't look like 60fps.. in fact, it chugged at the opening scene.

Still buying this Day one though.

Ah thank you. I saw the Dragon Quest thread. Then I saw in the settings menu the arrow didn't show to the right when the 1080p setting was shown and got immediate flashbacks to Dark Souls and other games from Japan. I'm still genuinely curious why so many devs refuse to, or don't care to add resolutions above 1080p.

No, I based the assumption on the settings page screenshot. Regardless, thankfully I was proven wrong and now I'm excited to see what people have been hyping up these past years.
