PlayStation 2 comes to PS4 official trailer

I'll stay optimistic and hope this feature gets a lot of support. Going to be quite disappointed though if all we get are a handful of games released every few months.

That's it?

If you're going to announce PS2 games coming to PS4 with no disc support, at least come out the gate with a bit more games than that.

$15?

Fuuuuck off.

The Ps4 IS capable of doing exactly what PCSX2 does, play discs natively and upscale the games to 1080p, but they won't because people are gonna buy this shit for $15 a pop.

I'm totally fine with the $15 version existing with Trophies and all that, but they really should have done some true backwards compatibility.

Yup. If they provided BOTH options there wouldn't be all the justified outrage.

But again like with terrible DLCdeals and Season Passes, we see that people will buy anything.

You're mad the games are 15 dollars, but fine with paying 15 dollars ? Make up your mind. That ahold statement from you sounds contradicting.

Reading people complain about the lack of Disc support I think is silly, if the system was just making the games run at the original resolution and with no added bonuses, I would agree with you. They are making some sizeable changes, and making these games available to people who no longer have there games collection, I loved Dark Cloud but that disc was lost long ago.

Also, all the people complaining about the price, some are 10 dollars, max seems to be 15.....that is not steep at all. I don't understand the issue at all, if it is too high, this isn't for you! I would have been happy to pay almost any amount for the port for Dark Cloud purely to try and get a Dark Cloud 3! Also, for me to be able to enjoy games I missed like Twisted Metal and Rogue Galaxy at a better resolution and modern OS/trophies is awesome.

You can find in some stores that sell PS2 games near me (used of course), and they still have a 5-15 dollar price tag attached (AUD), so when you are getting these extra features it is more than reasonable to ask for more than that amount. Maybe I am just completely blinded by my excitement to play Dark Cloud again, but whatever....WOO!

PCSX2 can already run games in 1080p or even much higher, adding in AA as well. And this on my old Radeon 7850, which is a relatively low-end card these days.

The Ps4 could have done the exact same thing. Instead the big announcement is "buy more old games". Cool, I guess. But it's meaningless to me.

Lol - Twisted Metal Black is the only PS2 Classic that I owned :(

Might pick up Rogue Galaxy, always wanted to play that, but moved onto PS3 at the time.

If you have a rig that can run PCSX2 well why do you care about the PS4 running PS2 games again?

Where have you been? Konami wont do it. They basically exited the gaming market to be in Pachinko business 1000%.

New games, sure. Low effort release via emulation? Why not? They barely have to do anything but collect money out of the deal. Don't be silly.

I now have zero confidence in the future of my PlayStation digital purchases, I could understand why PS3 content could not be transferred to PS4, but PS1 and PS2 classics support, with or without HD rendering, should have been day one.
Yeah totally agree. Up until now I've trusted Sony with digital purchases, they did a decent job ensuring a lot of PSN purchases crossed over the PS4 initially. However now you have to look at it and think who do you trust to carry this generations purchases on to the next, at this point my answer would have to be Microsoft.

PS4 is the 2nd system from Sony that has digital content. I think its safe to say that each gen will have their own licenses and such. Like there isnt really a "norm".

Its not like Sony has had BC for 5 generations and all of the sudden, they stop doing that. I bought a few PS4 games digitally just to avoid switching disks not because I intended to play them on PS5 though PS100.

Some of you have to step down into reality. Even Xbox there will be a time where some previous gen software isnt supported. Will xbone games be playable on xbone2...xbone3? Is that really what you think when you buy a digital game?

PC is the way to go if you want to play all your games until whenever, you know?
Sony had digital content on the PS3, PSP, and Vita, and you could play a single PS1 purchase on all of them. The PS4 is the fourth system from Sony with online stores, and is looking like the first one where your PS1 purchase won't carry over. PSP purchases mostly carried over to the Vita. There's even some PS3 games that Sony ported to the PS4 then made cross-buy.

I'm not ok with rebuying games for $15 being the ONLY option when Ps4 clearly has the capability to let us run our Ps2 discs upscaled.

Of course it's cool to sell games digitally, I'd even buy some for games I don't have on my disc collection.

But I guess I was hoping Sony would be pushed to do something to respond to Microsoft's (free) backwards compatibility push. The cell processor wouldn't allow for emulation of Ps3 games, so the next best thing would be Ps2/Ps1 titles upscaled through a PCSX2-style emulator app on the Ps4.

I'm dreaming I guess.

I really hope we get "uprendered" Xbox, GCN, and Wii games on their respective systems as well.

I imagine we'd need to wait until NX for Nintendo's take on it. That gen had a lot of brilliant artwork that was hidden behind 480p and 480i resolution.

1. Because I want to play them on my Ps4.
2. Because not everyone has a gaming pc with even an entry-level graphics card.
3. Because backwards compatibility is a great precedent to have in general, especially since newer consoles clearly don't have the resilience of the old cartridge based machines.

Well, I guess they are going to charge for PS2 classics again on PS4 as GTA games are available as PS2 classics right now. This is complete BS. The games are NOT remakes, they are running in an emulator and trophies are done through monitoring memory states (there was a patent discussion on this one not so long ago). 1080p is done through the emulator and shareplay and such are basic PS4 capabilities.

In short Sony is basically saying f-you to their fans who bought the freaking things once already on PS3 even though they may have had disks (I certainly did that with a crapload of Atlus games). Basically what Sony is doing is making a lot of their fans a lot less likely to purchase digital versions of games. I find their stance very disappointing.

You're in the massive minority though. An edge case that Sony seriously does not give a shit about.

When's the One gonna play original xbox games guys?

When people paid for ps3 classics, was there actually any agreement between them and sony that they would get to play it on every console afterwards? Would anyone now go back in time and stop themselves from paying for a ps3 classic because suddenly they are denied access to them on a new console? I admit, it would be super sweet if the license carried over and gave you instant access to the new version with more features, but they haven't actually taken anything from anyone, yet people are acting like they've been robbed and exploited.

My slight annoyance with this is that it doesn't fit with how good they've been on other fronts like getting crossbuy owners free access to ps4 versions, so the inconsistency is a little issue. But as far as their sales tactics are concerned, they've invested money into a new feature without removing or denying anyone access from something people were perfectly happy to pay for at the time.

The "norm" in every other industry is that purchases of digital content are not repackaged every time you upgrade to the next iteration. Sony's lack of foresight in the online space has bitten them in the ass so many times that it blows my mind people are now defending them for it. I'm not sure how long you've played on Playstation but I assure you there was indeed a time when they had a reputation for preserving their legacy. My discs and even memory cards worked on PS3. They already have a virtual PS2 emulator - it was flawed, for sure, but instead of perfecting it and adding to its features they're now selling you games of their choosing for $15 a pop - some of which you may have already paid for.

Ah yes, sorry. 4th System. I wasn't counting handhelds.

PS1 BC is still up in the air. We dont know of it. PS3 cross buy titles were game by game basis and not a norm to port over all titles. There is no indication Sony will do so the same every gen. That was my point. (trying to keep the VITA breathing was a reason some games were ported over to it as well even when they are shit)

Guys, just get a PS2 and the physical copies of games. Dirt cheap and it's 100% hardware accurate.

1. Runs in crap resolution.
2. Runs like crap on modern TVs.
3. A lot of people already BOUGHT PS2 Classics on PSN. Why the heck should we be paying again for the same thing?
4. Because of item 3 above a lot of people will find it unreasonable to continue purchasing any PS1/PS2/PSP games as going forward there is fat chance these will stay there.
5. What happens in a few years when Sony decides to shut down PS3 downloads ala PSP? There is no Vita alternative as you have for that. Are folks here prepared to keep rebuying their favorite games forever on each new platform?
6. Defense of Sony in this instance is ridiculous. Yeah, I could even understand a small upgrade/transfer fee (would quite dislike it but at least it would be bearable) but just making people rebuying their digital versions once again when Sony has a functional emulator for the same games on PS4 is bullshit.

Its not about an agreement, no one is saying they don't have the right to do it.

It just suck that they hold those views in 2015 and just put Sony at a terrible position going forwards if they believe in this BS.
