Witcher 3 Wins GOTY @ The Game Awards 2015!

Looking at my own GotY list I have to say that this checks out. Fantastic game.

Nope.

Bethesda did a great job improving the combat and controls of Fallout 4 over previous games in the series.
Witcher 3 combat is just as bad as its ever been in the series.
Fallout 4 wins this category with ease.

And degraded in a lot of other areas. Fallout 4 definitely is a zero sum game in many aspects with respect to NV and even FO3.

Also I'm not sure if you've played the other witcher games if you think that combat is the same...

Man I can't believe [my favorite game] didn't win! what a joke!!1

in all seriousness, I loved fallout 4 but it doesn't deserve goty imo. I should pick up the witcher 3 at some point.

Not even close. Combat in fallout 4 is as straightforward as it comes. Very little encounter variety, very basic fps mechanics with basically no flavour and vats to make it even more straightforward. You can praise bethesda for many things, but combat isnt one. The combat mechanics in the witcher 3 arent perfect, but miles ahead of anything bethesda has ever put out.

Behind Fallout for me, but TW3 is a DAMN strong game and I have no arguments with it being the majority vote for GOTY.

In a year of strong contenders, that's saying something.

I feel the most divisive aspect of TW3 is it's combat. Which has mostly been designed to be compatible with m+k input. Which it actually accomplishes pretty well. But as others said, who enjoyed Souls combat or FO4 more but say TW3 still is the overall better game.

Just imagine, how this gameplay system will change with 2077. It's not going to be focused around sword play. We'll have dual first person and third person combat and squad stuff. I can only imagine them getting stronger in gameplay for 2077. And certainly their story, game design, and world building will stay strong. Never mind they have Mike Pondsmith providing a wellspring of knowledge of lore for the game.

While I personally didn't enjoy the Witcher 3, I could tell it was a well made game that simply didn't appeal to me. It was a good choice, and I'm sure it was a close race.

Looks like a good game, but also looks like a very safe and typical choice.

I'm pretty suprised The Witcher 3 seems to be the favorite for GOTY. I thought most sites would go with MGSV or Fallout 4 since most console gamers are a lot more familiar with those series and they're a bit easier to get into. I remember seeing similar sentiments in the OT earlier in the year. Barely anyone thought it had a chance.

CDPR has come a long way in a few months for a game from them to be considered the "safe" pick with all the major franchises that have released games this year. Great to see :)

Not really. AI takes cover and uses flanking tactics, enemy formations that include a mix of melee users and range users make encounters even more varied, and different species use different tactics. Raider encampments are structured to make formations differing and thus less repetitive. Guns feel pretty good to boot. I enjoyed the variety of guns and enemies, the noticeable feedback that gun mods incurred, and I enjoyed the AI and enemy feedback way more than that seen in Wolfenstein: TNO for instance. I'm not alone in my praise. Very enjoyable shooter. Not without crowning moments of Bethesda jank however.

The melee combat is a very stark contrast, and you aren't wrong concerning this. It's given a Condemned-ish system of parrying instead of blocking, but it still feels like a slightly upgraded Skyrim which is extremely underwhelming in the face of the gunplay (and Witcher 3).

Not saying I didn't enjoy Witcher 3's combat, where you can igni-face-melt everything except the final bosses* (you can whirl and rend those tho), but it was deffo worse than FO4's gunplay. Also a different genre of action, bear in mind. Witcher 3 is my GOTY but I think every other big release this year has it beat when it comes to action.

* = On Death March.

Jeez, are you so anti-PC? I was responding to the part I had bold.

Does everyone have to be a sensitive prick?
I'm not anti PC. And don't call me prick. The post above ask between xbone and ps4 and nothing more. Of course a more powerful machine can handle better port, what's exactly the point? We can stop to be fanboyistic for a second and read better the matter of the post?
Just to say:
Current quick consensus: PS4 or Xbox One?

Thinking about grabbing it while it's $25.

PS4. That probably goes for almost all multi platform games.
It seems pretty clear to me PC has no part of the question.

Wrong mr. opinion

Better than Fallout winning. Thank goodness.

Would have personally preferred MGS5 or Bloodborne though.

What's up with all the Fallout hate? See a lot of people posting stuff like this here. I didn't particularly love the game myself, but the way people are talking about it makes it seem like Bethesda killed their favourite pet or something

Um I've played the souls series and bloodborne and they feel vastly different in many areas. idk why.

I wouldn't say vastly different at all. There are some differences, But I could never call Bloodborne a new IP, even tho I guess it technically is. It's far too similar. When the developer has a shield in as a joke, and then adds one in the DLC, It just adds more fuel. It's like It is a souls game, but it isn't. Let's be honest. It could easily get away with being in the souls universe, while more aggressive, it plays pretty much the same. There are far more similarities than differences

I guess Street Fighter and Darkstalkers is the same series.

Yeah, I think its my favorite game of the 5 that were nominated. I would be okay with fallout, but im glad they chose the witcher 3. (my game of the year is Cradle, though)

It's my game of the year. Of course it's not perfect but the story completely sucked me in and the world had me for so many hours. Such a good game.

Out of all the AAA stuff this year, Witcher 3 certainly is the most deserving of GOTY. Such an intelligently written game with wonderful world and quest design.
CD Project Red has such a great track record so far and I can't wait to see what they do with Cyperpunk

That said.. Its not quite my personal favourite game of the year. For example Cities Skylines I'd rank higher on my personal list but games like that are probably way too niche to be even nominated in general GOTY category.

Might go that route then. I love my Elite controller, but it doesn't trump better performance.
The elite controller extra buttons are a god send for Witcher, you'll be switching between menus and weapons alot, paddles make the game easier to navigate ie Magic selection on left paddle rather then using bumpers. Like to put that out there given how extensively I use the controller for W3

As we all expected, its just the end of Geralt's story.

CDPR CEO:

Frankly I wish they would reconsider and brought back Geralt after Cyberpunk. I can see how hyped I would be if there was some ARG hinting at the return of the legend. I just find him to be the most entertaining character I have ever played as. Plus it's not like the endings of TW3 could not be followed up upon, and Geralt is only little over hundred years old...Vesemir was around three times that.

I think its newsworthy for a new thread. Some people still think Witcher 3 is the end of Witcher franchise

It's not exactly news, they've said this since before Witcher 3 released iirc. Some people just didn't read carefully and took it as the end of the witcher games period.

I agree. I want Geralt to return. He's my favorite character in gaming as well.

Bollocks.
W3's combat is a big improvement over 2, and a massive improvement over 1.
Not to mention that nailing 3rd person melee combat is harder than nailing decent fps combat.
