PSX: King of Fighters 14 Trailer - "PS4 Console Exclusive"

The graphics don't bother me that much, but 50 characters = all interest lost. Don't have time to learn that many matchups.
Don't worry, if it's anything like the other KOF games you'll probably only have to learn six or seven matchups, at least one of which is some version of Iori. ;^)

I really like that new super move Kula has. And the new MAX mode sounds interesting; since it gives you access to EX moves, it doesn't have completely different effects for everybody (unlike Instinct in KI, V-Trigger in SFV, or Overdrive in BB), but as long as the EX moves have varied properties like they did in KOFXIII then it'll feel more unique than just a standard power-up mode.

Am I imagining things or does Max Mode meter length vary by character?

[edit] Might actually be based on the number of characters you've lost. One of the matches from the archived footage had two players with Kula on their team, and the one who had her 3rd got a larger meter than the one who had her 2nd.

The more I see of this game the more I'm starting to look forward to it. The characters in the CSS actually look really good.

Dude, he played Tekken Tag 2, which is a game that has fewer character templates and bunch of clones compared to this... You prob wont convince him to like this game.

I on the other hand. HYPE! Only wish is consider Blue Mary and Vanessa as DLC if leak list was true...

I'm actually more excited for this than SF5, it just looks more "original" in a way with so many different characters with different colors and visual styles.
In a odd way the "not quite top of the line graphics" actually helps the game a bit for me.
Like a counter to SF5's suuuper slick visuals.

Gameplay wise it looks pretty good, with seemingly good satisfying feel to the attacks, I like the way the characters fall to the ground and the animations is actually very nice even if the game does seem a little stiff sometimes.
As long as they don't skimp out on all the modes like survival I'm all in!

Still haven't seen anyone cancel any special moves in max mode, is it even possible?

You need max mode to do EX moves but once you enter it then using EX moves does not use meter.

Also, there are reports of just defend being in the game.

I thought I saw a familiar blue flash when someone blocked, wonder if it's true.

It always looks a tiny bit better after every trailer but I cannot get over how terrible and bland everyone looks. Like unoriginal puppets which is odd to consider if you look at their fantastic original design. I will swallow my pride if this game is actually fun to play, because 50 characters is nice to have (but a nightmare for balance).

Game looks SO much better than before. I'm really looking forward to it. Need to see Tizoc and Ramon and then I'm done until release.

I think it is legitimately looking better...

I am sure part of it is that my expectations are lowered. But I do think this is looking more and more like a game that may end up looking on the bad end of barely acceptable (this is still dependent on continuous improvements). Which, to be fair, is more than I could have ever hoped based on the initial screen shots.

I mean, it really hurts that the character I love the most wasn't able to make a fifty character roster. However, I guess someone was always going to be left out. But if the leaked roster is true then there will be plenty of characters I like in (including one of my favorites from Mark of the Wolves).

If I know me, and I do, I will be buying this game on launch.

Noticed something from the vids. If you are the first character on a team you can only get a max of 3 bars. But as you lose characters you can gain 4, and then eventually 5 bars on your last character. Once your bar is at maximum it looks like you can spend a bar to go into Max mode. Not certain if you have to be at maximum to do this though. I doubt it, as it would mean the anchor character gets less Max mode though he has more meter. Max mode giving you EX stuff (maybe more stuff) is pretty valuable so I'd put higher value on that than the extra bar.
Is this just defense?

Andy's body flashes white when he blocks at the last moment.

Definitely looked like just defend to me.

Ah man it took a bit, but now i'm really fucking hyped for the Party Battle Mode. I've to get some of my friends to learn how to do motions and then team up with them.

Ok, even if the graphics are rough (but with 50 characters, I understand), animation is good and what I see of the gameplay is promising. Are we sure the HD touch of death nonsense are gone ?

I still fear online will be absolute crap judging by the fact they kept the tight gameplay of the license.

It does look pretty good, motion-wise. I'm not fond of the hit graphical effects; they look out of place visually compared to the models and environments. Have the same problem with Tekken 7's hit effects. They both remind me of when FPS engines first got colored lighting, and developers just abused the hell out of them with oversaturated environments. I think Capcom is doing a better job of translating 2D effects to 3D in SF. But, not a deal breaker.

I haven't honestly played KoF much since the early series, but it has King in it; if fellow Women Team members Mai and Yuri are also in, I'm sold.

My hope is that SNKP starts off with some pre-release Betas eventually. They seem to be working in a way where they make quick updates pretty consistently.

Has Just Defense ever been in a KoF? (I know I feel like it has due to SNK grooves). Anyone test alt. Guarding throws yet? Do we... even have command throw character in the game yet? I guess Chang, and Iori's Scumgale...

As gone as it's ever been since 2k2 series, ha. No, seriously, there's no pure XIII style HD mode right now, but the description says EX moves and cancels are allowed during MAX mode, though most haven't done such yet.

I liked HD mode well enough. It's the same as 2k2's cancel stuff, but actually usable on a much wider amount of the cast, rather than just making Nameless and Kasumi better than others. A retooled version of it / dream cancels still helps the game feel more modern than a 98 reskin. The fact you can only do EX moves in MAX mode should give this a unique flow compared to almost any other fighter out there, if that stays true.

It's interesting because SNK's old 2D effects (especially later on) were pretty "realistic" looking themselves. And then they made the effects for XIII and XII, which annoyed me by not having much transparency, and therefore always looking like they were composites in front of the characters.

These here already have more transparency, and envelop the characters a better (they should, they're particles in 3D space), and they have some decent details already (motion blur on Andy and Leona, Iori and Kyo's flames filtering off into smoke before disappearing, shockwaves on heavy impacts like GALACTICA PHANTOM, etc.)

I personally wish everyone made them as illustrative as the effects in the CC2 Naruto games. They look expressive as manga effects, but with great, equal-to-the-character level of animation and detail. But other than Xrd, no one seems to even try to do that.

I do love that they're still committed to making unique effects for characters that aren't really shared on anyone else, though. Kula's Ice effects are basically never used on other characters, but her little snowflake particles, and ice on her throw, blocks and attacks always seem to stay (rather than filtering the moves out because they take more time / resources.)

50 Characters?
That's a Dream that only a Custom made Mugen could provide!

I guess THAT explains the shitty graphics...

Edit:
Capcom vs SNK 2 had 48.
Marvel vs Capcom 2 had 56.
Both of those where criticized for their graphics.
Quantity over Quality.

KOF 2K2 UM had 60 or so. I could be wrong.

What about Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U? right now they just hit 56 characters.

I am not really feeling the look. The Guilty Gear engine has set the bar of the minimum a 3d fighter should somewhat resemble and the fluidity it should strive for. Still time to polish but the direction looks bad. The visuals look more like Tekken than king of fighters stylistically.

Guilty gear also has like what? Five characters? I don't think an aksys game ever had a truly huge roster.

I feel like you can't call something that exceptional the minimum.

I don't agree with that when it comes to fighting games.

Even if the game doesn't look good at least I can at least say that it has 50 characters.
Are you alright, Andy?
